Look, we're in a time where no one is kicking the big bags of goals. 

There's no Frosty Miller or Freddie Cook around these days, that time has passed us by.

It's not the measure of a player now.

Weid will fill a role and do it better than anyone else we've got at present.

His time has come.

Like it or not we need to know if he can step up in a big game and it might as well be now because if he can't then there's no point us being in finals just to make up the numbers. Better to have good intel coming into the trade/draft period.

Hogan, Lever and Viney leave a big hole in our structure.

As an aside, remember how Boyd was at the Dogs??? Couldn't catch a cold then suddenly turned it around at the end of 2016.

You just never know.

    Not off him for good, but in this massive game he'd want to do better than his career average of 3.3 kicks per game*. VFL performances are fine but no help if you can't translate it to the big time.

    Like Goodwin said,  this is his opportunity and he's up against McGovern and Hurn who are excellent backman so he's clearly going to have his work cut out for him.

    Fingers crossed but he's done enough at Casey and is worth another go. His only game this season as 1 of 2 tall forwards was against Richmond where he did a lot of really nice things. 

    He has to ruck well to give Max a decent chop out and he has to dig his knees in to McGovern's back as often as possible. 

    Tom McDonald now gets relieved of the rucking duties and the title of the main man up forward (if he wasn't already). Tom has to kick the goals. Sam just has to compete.

    Unfortunately He has shown nothing at senior level at all this year, he’s the fittest he has ever been and not been able to make an impact.

    So you are suggesting that he plays from behind not in front ?   :-)

    He hasn’t shown “nothing”. He’s taken some marks, kicked some goals, laid some tackles and done some ruck work. He’s also racked up a lot of stats in the VFL. He hasn’t been selected enough in the AFL to string together some games and play into some form.

    Well he's going to need to offer something more than a couple of possessions and a few tackles. 2 goals would be nice

    4 games, 10 marks.. 4 games, 3 goals, ave 3 tackles a game and ave 3 hit outs.. 

    I always feel players need more than 1 game in a row to get the pace of senior footy but Peds is not getting it done at senior level.

    In 2017 Pedo was competitive and had a good season. In 2018 at AFL level he has been rubbish. Up forward he has been useless, kicked less than a goal a game and got in others way with poor leads. He was tried down back as a last resort to revive his career and on the weekends showing that move is a bust. He was probably our worst player against the Swans. Only Hunt and Jetta has less impact, andthat was because they both missed part of the game injured and concussed. At 32 years old next season, he’ll be lucky to get a one year contract purely as a last resort to cover injury. As an AFL player he is finished. Disappointing performance his year considering he was competitive last year. The end has come quickly for him and a few others it seems.

    Well if we're going for a like for like with Hogan out, then yes. 20 metres behind the opposition at every opportunity.

    That's a pretty harsh comment on a kid who's body is only starting to grow to meet the demands of AFL footy.

    Hardly yet built like Tarzan.

    He's been willing if not always able. I haven't seen him putting in the short steps and not having a go.

    At 21 he has time on his side.

    I jokingly refer to Jenkins of the Adelaide variety as Jane ('Nasher' doesn't like me doing it), partly because of the alliteration... but he's had years in the system and is built like a brick....

    ...just he seems to like playing the small forward role.

    He's practically the same size as McGovern and eyeballing him close up at training a few weeks ago was confronting - he's a big unit

    Agree he's young but the point is challenge is set, opportunity is his to tear it apart

    Thats the whole problem with the discussion on Weid. We're not playing him looking for potential on Sunday he's got a mans job to fill and we need him to fill it. I dont care what he's going to be like in one or two years time we need what he's got NOW....and is he big enough to bring it like there's no tomorrow. . I think I have too many memories of Morton, Gysberts, Cook and Watts  and waiting for the day they fill out and step up. We all know now, with the exception of a game here or there,  they never really  did.  None seemed to have the mongrel required at this level. Weid reminds me of them. I SO want to be wrong about the weid...and will happily eat crow if I am. But I will judge him on what he brings on Sunday not who he might become.

    Got get 'em, Sam!  I'd love nothing more than to see him kick a few and cement a spot in the side for the rest of the season, however long that may be, with Hogan out.

    It's time to get behind him and back him in for a good game!

      The Sir Doug Nicholls Round kicks off in Darwin with a Top 4 clash between the Suns and the Hawks. On Friday night the Swans will be seeking to rebound from a challenging start to the season, while the Blues have the Top 8 in their sights after their sluggish start. Saturdays matches kick off with a blockbuster between the Collingwood and Kuwarna with the Magpies looking to maintain their strong form and the Crows aiming to make a statement on the road. The Power face a difficult task to revive their season against a resilient Cats side looking to make amends for their narrow loss last week. The Giants aim to reinforce their top-eight status, while the Dockers will be looking to break the travel hoodoo. The sole Saturday game is a critical matchup for both teams, as the Bulldogs strive to cemet their spot in the top six and the Bombers desperately want break into the 8. Sundays start with a bottom 3 clash between the Tigers and Kangaroos with both teams wanting to avoid the being in wooden spoon contention. The Round concludes with the Eagles still searching for their first win of the season, while the Saints look to keep their finals hopes alive with a crucial away victory. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

      And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

    • REPORT: Hawthorn

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

    • CASEY: Footscray

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.
