I think he had off a sizeable lump off in the middle of the season. In fact I think he broke down in round 2. Played 13 games for the year.

It is a fact of today's AFL fd. Everyone is tradable given the right deal.

I view all contracts as short term.

Yes but having him contracted means we hold the upper hand in deciding whether he stays or not

He played round 2 and 3 before his injury, and then returned in round 14 v Meth Coast

Every player can get injured. It's not as if it was a recurrence of a chronic injury. It was a hammy. I could ping one of those chasing the missus around the bedroom tonight. (granted, she is 20+ years younger than me)

Celebrate the fact that the games best ruckman has signalled his intent to saddle up for us long term, and give away the sad sack routine. This is nothing but good news mate.

Sticking it to the club for trading Watts by extending his contract, good on ya Max. He’ll regain his 2016 form after being NQR this season post return from injury. I can feel it. Deep in my loins.

I'm glad we've re-signed Max and I'm also glad we've only signed him until 2021.

2018 is a big year for him. Injury didn't help his 2017. It seriously hampered it, but I worry that he doesn't have the weapons to move with the evolution of the game. But I've never been his biggest fan.

Thought he was outstanding in 2016; the mobility and contested marking all over the ground, as well as the tapping to advantage. However, I felt the opposition worked him out a bit in 2017, so it'll be interesting to see how he responds next year.

Yes, mainly by complaining to the AFL and getting the rules enforced a different way. Still crapped off about that.

Critical extension. Key figure around the club. Loved his comments too. And the fact that he agreed to the contract extension so quickly, rather than string out negotiations (which may have allowed the media to generate some noise, however misguided).

Now time to extend Petracca's and Oliver's contracts. Until at least 2030.

Good stuff Max. This is a player that decided that a couple of season ago  he wanted to be spoken about as one of the top ruckmen in the comp. So he worked hard and got the rewards.

Unfortunately this season he copped the injuries which hampered him. But I have no doubt he will put in a good pre season and be better next year.

Good to hear a player a player want to hang around and talk about his love for the club.

Gawn had 35 hitouts to Grundy’s 12......... the midfield make ruckman look good or bad. And on that occasion, the midfield were woeful, and made poor Maxy look ineffective.

Also Grundy played a lot forward that game, the defense should take some blame.

Interesting stat, it seems that my observation must have matched my mood on the day. but thanks for pointing out the facts.

How easy was that.

If only all player contracts were extended as easily as Maxy it would make the whole process easier for everyone.

No bs about I just wanna concentrate on my footy and will deal with it at the end of the season stuff.

Great work and great result.

Im glad Max is with us ( shame the league isnt    )  but hes far from teh most important cog in the wheel  despite what many might think.  You ARE most definitely better off with a good Ruck, but you are far FAR better off with BETTER Midfielders.

If you have both....and the nod of the umps on the day...good things should come

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
