And Gil will be saying what a fantastic support for "the brand"!

Note AFL official spin rule 352.3.a  GW$ Attendance formula  multiply actual numbers (and don't forget to include all players, staff, maggots, scorers etc) multiplied by 3, them add a few to make it not divisible by 3 or some perceptive members of the public could get suspicious

14865 is the worst attendance at a finals match since the First World War.

just proves I guess you cannot make a team an instant success supporter wise when you create one in an area we're there is no tradition or support for the code.

It will take 20+ years of sustained success to change that.

And I expect the AFL will be happy to distort the competition for those 20 years. Regardless of whether you think extending AFL this way is a good, bad, wise or stupid idea, it means pain to other weaker teams for the foreseeable future,  but lots of fun and loot for the empire builders.

Just shows they have zero support and west Sydney has zero interest in the Afl in general. Usually for finals esp in a new area that would be a novelty factor where neutrals might come along.

Pathetic crowd. Assume upto 5K WC fans were there. And taking into account the big crowd the wanderers got in their very first season in soccer this is looking like a disaster for the afl.

Their guns will get sick playing in front of no one soon

Same day, not too far away:

"With Penrith’s Pepper Stadium packing 15,089 spectators into its grandstands and the standing room area at each end, the Matildas enjoyed their biggest home crowd in their history."

Huge Congrats to the Matildas - there'd have to be alarm bells ringing at AFL HQ.

Sydney and Adelaide clubs could do a lot more to market their games to away fans.

A few overnight special trains could be a start. Could you imagine a train load of Collingwood or Richmond supporters.

Of course for Melbourne trips we could have special cheese platters in the buffet car.

For those who can remember it could be like the Old Rutherglen Red !!

"Slightly less seasoned wine drinkers but experienced revelers might recall weekends in which they were transported from Melbourne to Rutherglen and back aboard an ageing red rattler of the same name. While it never quite achieved the international renown of Africa’s Blue Train or The Orient Express, it was still a train journey that served as a rite of passage for what then became some of our more hardened palates. Huge investigation going on at the moment, into these figures by both State Governments, in view of funds being poured into the Code....

And do you reckon anything will ever come of it willmoy?

These parliamentary enquiries are often there for show and are often done to justify the existence of those doing the investigating (think Yes, Prime Minister)

The huge TV rights money means that the AFL are going to do whatever it takes to keep that flow of money coming in.  There can be no 'bad' news as such.

I worked for the AFL NSW over the season doing promotional work on the Sth Coast

Eden to Moruya and was given two GWS memberships for free

I was able to get hold of another 4 to give to my Demon supporter friends for the ACT game

I wonder how many of thier Memberships were actually paid for

Scene: AFL House. A new staff member is being shown around.

Mary: ... and here's your desk. Lunch room is over there behind the photocopier. I'll get your parking pass from HR, then we'll---

DING DING DING DING DING DING

A-OOGA! A-OOGA! A-OOGA!

Kendra: what's that?

Mary: alarm bells are going off. Critical level. That's the highest.

Kendra: do we have to evacuate?

Mary: no, it's the alarm that's triggered when Mr McLachlan is in danger of missing one of the bonus clauses in his contract. Come with me. You might learn something.

They enter GIL MCLACHLAN'S office

Gil is at his desk, sweating, with shirt sleeves rolled up, staring at a crumpled piece of paper in his hand.

Gil: We only needed 14,000 at that game! 14 bloody thousand to trigger the finals attendance bonus. 14 bloody thousand!

Mary: are you talking about the GWS game, Mr McLachlan?

Gil: Oh, Mary, there you are. What the f*** are we going to do? They can't draw two men and a dog! This is a disaster. Looks like I'm not going to the Cote d'Azur now! I'll be in the bloody Bahamas again for the holidays if I don't get this bonus!

Mary: what was the attendance?

Gil: Hang on ... here it is ... 4,065 and half of those were school kids we let in for free.

Mary: It didn't look great on TV.

Gil: oh, f*** the TV! Who cares about how it looked? We're in a crisis here! Dammit, even the pie revenue is a disaster. Total of 63 sold for the whole frigging match!

Mary: that's not good. That's really not good.

Kendra: a low pie consumption can still be indicative of a high population.

Gil & Mary: what?

Kendra: according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2013, sales of pies, pastries and other baked products containing trans fats has been steadily declining since 1999.

Gil: what?

Mary: how does that help us, Kendra?

Kendra: if I recall from the annual report of the Australian Bakers and Pastry Chefs Association from last year, specifically the datum representing consumption of meat pies per capita, consumption of 63 pies could be representative of a population from anywhere between ... let's see ... (types into phone) 2,852 and 14,865 people. Depending on various factors to be more precisely defined.

Gil: what's she saying, Mary?

Mary: I think she's saying ...

Mary & Kendra: there could have been 14,865 people at the game.

Gil: you mean ... over 14,000?

Mary: over 14,000.

Gil: I'm saved!!!

Mary: well done. I can see you're going to go far, Kendra

Kendra: (slightly shocked) did you say I’m going to "get f***ed"???

Mary: no, no, that was when Simon was here. That's all over now. I said you'll GO FAR.

Kendra: oh, that's better. Still, if those c***s don't pull some genuine crowds soon, we'll ALL be f***ed!

And strangely enough Collingwood were involved with that low attendance.

It might be that Sydney (the city) doesn't have much interest in attending anything. The first week of NRL Finals (4 games) attracted only 75,000 in total, with the largest crowd (about 22,000) being in Melbourne. That doesn't mean the GWS experiment is a failure...just that anyone expecting Sydney residents to buy a ticket to watch them might have over-estimated the willingness of Sydney-based supporters to bother turning up.

It also means that they will not survive without investment from the AFL.

Would like to see the TV ratings for Sydney for GWS games and how the product is being received pre and post the introduction of GWS. It can only be television that justifies GWS and probably also GCS as it looks like it will never be attendance at games.

The TV numbers are very low ... you'll have to go searching for clarification though.

but they didn't have to buy a ticket.......apparently there was no shortage of freebies

I should have added that there's insufficient evidence to also claim that the creation of GWS has been a success.

I've consistently supported the principle behind the establishment of GWS and the Gold Coast Suns, but I'm not convinced that we know yet whether the investments in either jurisdiction will become long-term successes or failures.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
