We are almost there, we have the best CEO (Peter jackson) in the league, he will not let this continue, we will again turn players over in the off season, our VFL side is humming along,

we are not far off being a power house in the AFL, :D

To take a Goodwin Quote "we haven't achieved anything yet"

Just don't know what happens to this playing group & can't bring the intensity required for such a game that meant so much ..  what makes them from being such s hard tackling team to laying their first tackle at the 11min mark if the 1st qtr? Why do our leaders go missing  yet you see the leaders in Geelong , swans etc stand tall & marshal their troops?

I was of similar thinking....you would need 13 wins. We needed 13 in all probability . We might sneak in on 12.

Both will only be making up the numbers.

So much discussion about making /not making finals when the truth of the matter was our first finals like test was today...and we lost.

I seriously doubt we have sufficient of the right stuff to go much further this year.

Goodwin failed dismally today imho. He had one job. Prepare a team to play to win. I saw no such thing in Red and Blue today.

The required intensity only showed itself around the 12 min mark of the final qtr. A switch flicked on, we lifted, we played good footy and then Collingwood flicked it back off.

Not good enough, not yet.

Cant play in the wind, cant lift to the occasion. Major shortcomings.

I think the publicity announcing our arrival has been a little premature.

Today, so Melbourne. The weekend waiting on others , so Melbourne.

We're doing a lot right, still doing a. lot wrong. Today was an epic fail all round.

I wasn't at the ground, but I didn't get the impression of players coasting. It was more that they looked immensely under pressure, and many players who fall back to poor 'habits' when under pressure, did. Brayshaw fumbles. T.McDonald shanks. Jones barges and hoofs. At least Bernie refrained from punching anyone.

It looked to me more that they fell apart under the pressure - probably because they were well aware of the stakes. It's still mental weakness, but it's a less contemptible version than the accusation that they just didn't GAF I think.

They are just not at the point where their focus and desperation to make their mark on the big stage overshadows the fear of expectation to the point where you don't even stop to consider the alternatives. Hugely disappointing just the same.

This should have been dealt with during Roosy's first year...

Slightly tongue in cheek I'm assuming. What you have said is almost plucked straight out of Bailey, Craig, Neald, Roos's end of season pressers.

I was philosophical about our capitulation last year in round 23, this year feels like a slap in the face of every member who's stuck fat.

Hogan doesnt help our defensive pressure mindset so honestly i'm not fussed if he isnt playing. our best footy has been without him.

To be honest, the tom mcdonald i saw today is the same mcdonald I've seen since day 1. terrible skills and low footy iq.  oscar is a clone.

max needs a kick up the arse.

petracca played well though. All these demonlanders were saying he needed a break after a poor game...crazy mofos!

I just finished watching Goodwin at his press conference. He consistently said we didn't talk about what was at stake, and yet the players came out nervous and didn't hit a tackle for 11 minutes to start the game.

Most human beings can't just block things out; we  need to talk about things. I wonder if the Goodwin-led unwillingness to talk about finals meant that the players couldn't get that out of their systems midweek and came in with baggage that stopped them playing hard aggressive footy. It wasn't until the game was almost gone that we seemed to put that stuff to bed and just play.

Well after a great nights sleep I have come up with our NEW 2018 Membership slogan:

The MFC NEVER FAILS TO DISAPPOINT.

I reckon that sums it up nicely.

#NEVER FAILS TO DISAPPOINT.

As for Goodwin crapping on all season that ALL players are looked at equally and picked on form, then how does Bernie Vince keep getting a game.

Watts is dropped for form but Vince stays in the seniors.

Maybe Watts needs to become good mates with Goodwin then he may have a free ride.

Just going back to Mr Roos comment about the "vail of negativity" around the club, well Mr Roos when the team continually puts in MENTALLY WEAK performances like yest and for the last 11 [censored] seasons can u blame its supporters for having a negative mind set.

Ffs this club is going is doing me head in and if I hear the players come out and say how disappointed they are I will [censored] spew.

Supporters attitudes do NOT matter. We do NOT influence the outcome, no matter how far ahead of ourselves we may get.

I disagree with this. Culture is a whole of club thing. Admittedly, we play a much smaller part than the players and coaches, but we play our part.

Supporters talk to players all the time, players don't live in a bubble. I don't see how players  wouldn't be effected by things they constantly hear, even if they claim they aren't. They are humans just like us. I remember the after game functions of yesteryear, I remember seeing people fawning over a young Col Sylvia, pumping up his tyres, telling him what a superstar he was destined to become. We are the backslappingest supporters going around after a good win, everyone's a star and the premiership is ours for the taking. A week later we're slashing wrists and wanting to trade half the list out.

The arrogance of Melbourne fans is what truly baffles me though. All the talk about wanting Richmond in an Elim because we're a much better side and will smash them. How in hell do you come to that conclusion? Historically we are the biggest rabble of the last 50 years, My entire lifetime of following the "demons"has been one of repeated abject failure, some periods have been a bit less failure ridden but make no mistake it's all ended in misery. Recently we lost to North and scraped in against Brisbane, we are playing bog ordinary footy atm and have been ever since the Sydney game. except for a quarter here and a 10 minute burst there. Sadly that was the week after I first allowed myself to believe we'd make finals, lesson learnt again. Never have faith in Melbourne, never ever

The "relax we've got this" attitude is clearly one the players buy into, but still every time we play a team below us some smartarz insists on posting it and more often than not the team proves they were thinking the exact same thing. That phrase should carry a ban from this site, lifetime would be my preference but I'd settle for 2 weeks.

While I'm on this rant the constant harking back to The Northey days or even Daniher or Balme years is really really sad. We were soft during all this periods and never won anything that mattered, I'm guessing here but in all those years I bet we had a period of stinking it up, 3 consecutive losses at least and most likely drubbings has been a standard feature of every season I've seen. We should be done for misleading branding, we're not and in my lifetime have never been demons, perhaps marshmallows would be more accurate.

Yup.

We had some good years, but we were never close to being great.

Even when we made the Grand Final in 2000, we missed the Finals the following season. Top 4 in 1998, missed the finals in 1999.  Top 4 in 1994, did not play finals again until 1998.  The finals drought from 1964 until 1987. The finals drought from 2006, still currently going unless it ends today.

We have been a putrid club for so long. No flag since 1964, no MFC player has ever kicked 100 goals in a season, worse than Fitzroy from 2007-2014, less All Australians than any other team, statistically woeful compared to every other team,  no superstar players in the last 50 years while every other team has had multiple of them.

We are just a nothing club.

This. Flogs on here thinking lower teams are easy wins. No AFL game is easy.

I think you answered your own question. I think the club was concerned that the players have a history of putting themselves under too much pressure. I know that doesn't fit with the 'they are mentally weak' rant we get on here after a loss, but remember most of our top level talent are 20-23.

Its a lot easier to play with nothing to lose. You just act on instinct. That's why Goodwin talked about 'habits' in his presser. Habits take over from instinct. Remember when Hawthorn were unstoppable and they'd win games from 3 goals down with 4 minutes to play? That's because they developed the 'habit' of not panicking and relying that other teams would.

Apparently we don't discuss Elephants at Melbourne.

Goodwin has a few problems to sort out. The first is he doesn't acknowledge the first one being there is a problem with Elephants.

Im starting to seriously wonder if hes the right bloke.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
