Why hasn't the dees traded up for a higher pick?

Maybe no-one wants to trade 'down'?

You seem a little defensive / sensitive to criticism of the club on this occasion AF - its not a pot shot its debating. Industry thinks we paid overs and we did. Would love SOS doing the negotiations for us with Taylor and co doing the scouting and selecting of the players

Easier to judge Silvagni when their cap is tighter and they can't wear salary cap dumps each year in return for getting players in more cheaply draft pick wise.

Fair point, it is a big chunk of money. I figured it would be the alternative to agreeing to pay a share of Watts' contract. (Though that detail still isn't publicly confirmed as far as I'm aware)

So we might've indirectly cooked the baggers?

Noice!

Disagree with this. Other clubs with better picks to trade were into him (and allegedly more $). I think it was a fair price & the club did well to attract him to us. I'm also aware that my opinion won't change that of others so, on we go

So you reckon Lever would've chosen the Dees if he was moving clubs in the Bailey, Neeld era? Joe the Goose indeed!

Not even a pick upgrade? I don't really understand why we folded so early on the Lever deal if we didn't have anything else significant in the works, apart from bickering with Fremantle over third or fourth rounders for Balic.

Dodoro very impressively secured all 3 of his targets in the end, and wisely held off on Stringer knowing the Dogs had no choice but to move him on. Port did very well too.

25 and 40 for Schache? 29 and 31 would have done it then?

Maybe the club know Weeds & JBH will be around for the next 10 years...

Personally I would have taken the risk on Schache with 29 & 31, would take the risk on a former pick 2 than a speculative pick 29 & 31 in a supposed weak draft.

Same. I think we have 36. Could have been 29 and 36, and still kept 31. I think the draft is weak - at least that is what I have heard off of friends who follow it intricately. But that doesn't mean there won't still be good players available at 29 on wards. We just have to find them, but I agree, I would have traded into Schache. We could then have offloaded Weideman next year if he didn't work out.

Schache would have been good insurance if Hogan decided to leave or Weideman does not come on. Schache would have a different mind set if he came back home to VIC.

Well that was a waste of two weeks.  Have we improved our list, not sure Lever is a good player but we lose Watts and 2 first round picks, mid second round picks are hit and miss so I'm not overly excited by having 3 this year.  C- for the trade period, A+ for the girls we picked up in the draft, they are actually the type of players our mens side need, couple of forward/Ruck options and some real speed

Im guessing that in their excitement of GAJ going back to the Cats, the media have forgotten to report on out last minute, trade-week-winning deal ? There must have been one right?

We got Jake Lever, we won trade week long ago.

Maddy Guerin looks like she will do very well in the AFLW next year. Highlight package shows she has a fair bit of skill. Also like the look on Eden Zanker, looks like 2 very good pickups

Disappointing we weren't able to upgrade some of those 2nd round picks. Multiple clubs have done picks swaps near the end here. Tigers traded pick 15 down to Brisbane for similar 2nd round picks. That should've been our trade right there. Could've gone to draft with a first rounder or passed on the first rounder for a decent player or prospect such as Schache. As it stands we hold multiple second round picks in a weak draft. Not much chance any of the players we pick there will make it.

Disappointing result all up, but good to land Lever.

Exactly.

Not only is he the best player traded, he is also the one with the highest ceiling at 21 and doesn't come with a bag of personal off field issues!

I'm confident we will get back into the 1st round of the draft next year, if we strongly believe we need to.

Imagine how North fans (sorry, fan), must feel.

Freo essentially traded Pick 2 for Lachie Weller.  Bloody hell.  The bloke has been okay, but we paid 2 far later first rounders for a 21 year CHB who was almost in the AA side.

We've done far better than some will give us credit for.  In come Lever and Balic, we still have 4 picks inside the Top 50 with 3 of those in the second round and we moved on Watts, which I think in the end will work for both club and player..  We got our deals done quickly, without fuss and we can move on to getting better over the pre-season.

I hear this every year, yet our record indicates that we can pick up handy players later in the draft (see Hunt, Omac / Tmac, Hannan etc).

I couldn't disagree more.  Lever is a super addition, Balic gives us further depth and at 21 he still has upside, while moving on Watts is a good move for all involved.  Not to mention we still have 3 picks inside the Top 40 to help us land some further good additions to the side, something Taylor has done well in the past.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
