Wonder whether we are splitting hairs. They are both poor of recent. One may have a few more stats but the other can be trusted by his team to play a role which can't be measured in stats but has an impact on the team i.e. contesting hard when its your turn,  working hard off the ball to maintain defensive structures,  going hard in aerial contesting to bring the ball to ground etc.

Lack of intensity is a result of laziness. Part of why he plays well after a kick up the back side.

One thing we definitely can agree on though is that he needs to earn his place in the VFL this week. Would give Weid one more week.

In a few games this year JW has been top 5 and had a huge impact.

Clearly Watts is a much better player across the year but on current form they are on par when you consider action not measured by stats like playing your role and contesting hard when its your turn to go etc etc

I think you will find Weidemans primary role was to offer a contested pack situation and firstly bring the ball to ground. Watch the first quarter again with that in mind and you will see he gets to 6 seperate long ball contests and the ball comes to ground every time. Obviously it would be better if he marked them but not if that creates further risk that the opposition do rather than it coming to ground.

Finals usually see more long balls forward that create this. I cant recall Watts ever getting to 5 contest marking situations in a quarter let alone marking or splitting them. Watts may come back in and Weid may be dropped but the role Weid did on the weekend particularly early was a role that Watts is not adept at.

Agree on both bolded points. As i say he competed in the air and with Jessie out that was important. Also agree he does that better than Watts. Which is a bit of indictment on Watts but crashing packs has never been his go.

I was happy for them to bring Weed and happy for Watts to be dropped. My comments were in response to Demons1858 saying Weeds form was better than Watts.

Do you know whether the junior players get much of an opportunity to approach Goodwin or get feedback? I heard the odd anecdote in previous eras about players on the list who weren't regulars in the seniors being almost ignored the senior coach.

Roos was very much like that - in that if you weren't best 22 you weren't on his radar.

Unless we absolutely have to, I can't see Goody wanting to 'shake things up' too much with so much on the line.  If we make the finals then we have the week off to rest up, which means we can get guys like Viney through for the next fortnight and then give them the week to rest.

For me, someone like Watts is a chance to come back in over the next few weeks, as is Hogan, but outside of that I doubt there were will many changes.  I just don't see it happening.

Maybe that was the case in the past, but from what I've heard about Goody is that he is not only a fantastic coach, but Goody and Macca in particular get around the developing players just as much if not more then the senior players.

He seems to really have a good balance between Coach and just being another bloke around the club

That would be amazing if Keilty debuted this week. Even with so much on the line its probably a good week to debut him as the Lions KP players are young and raw.

Wouldnt surprise anyone though if he did come in, hes been in red hot form and Goody loves to surprise us.  Perhaps he has moved ahead of Frost in the coaches eyes.

T Mac is better up forward and this will release him to play there.
