Viney is tough like Selwood, but is not a bleeder

The thing about Selwood is that he has taken so many hits that his facial tissue has degraded to mush and the skin is about as strong as toilet paper. Any slight knock will cause cuts and bleeding. This was a common problem with epileptics before effective drugs. They had regular fits and fell on their face so often that they cut up and bled profusely.

Also Viney didnt walk into a great team winning flags.

he more than any other player on our list has dragged us forward and lifted our standards

by the time Viney is 30, he will have no peers

By any measure Selwood is great player. 3 X Premiership player, 4 X most courageous, 5 X All Australian etc so I really don't understand why he hasn't eliminated the ducking thing from his game. It is completely unnecessary for him.

In the end he will be remembered as a great but still have those question marks over his name with most footy supporters.

Viney will have no such issues. Perhaps Joel could look to the way Jack plays for the last couple of years and emulate him.

In the afl app match up simulation Selwood is ahead in most stats this season but I reckon Viney has played differently allowing teammates  to take control and last week we had the complete version.

In saying that Jack isnt far behind .

watson and loyd will have you believe Jacks disposal by foot aint great but this season there  is a 4% difference between he and Selwood . selwood 76% Vines 72% Both dees haters Watson and the stager .

I thought if you got knocked out it was AFL policy that the player missed the following week.
I couldn't care less if he shrugged off the trainers and jogged away.
Selwood was out.

Gee you guys are tough.

Sure Selwood ducks and goes down but he also goes where angels fear to tread.

He is one hell of a tough dude and a great player, like him or not. And I would love to have him in our side.

Why compare him to Viney. Mine's bigger than yours attitude.

Viney is a great player or going to be a great player, but he is not at Selwood's level.

This is a guy who amasses possessions and important possessions game after game, year after year.

Similarly, I think Dangerfield is a show pony and a stager but he is a great player.

Hell, there are a lot of players who we don't like but recognize as great players. Kevin Bartlett staged for free kicks whenever he went near the ball, but was a great player.

I was just going to say the same thing:lol: He is Jack Viney, i hate when people do this compare players to other players.

Bizarre to think that Selwood is closing in on 250 games. In my mind he is still the 'kid who never was a kid', turned up in his first season and was immediately a great player. and by his second season was rightly amongst the best midfielders playing the game.

However, I don't think the two are really a like-for-like comparison as players. Over his career, Selwood has kicked a lot more, to Viney's leaning to handballs. Selwood also spends more time delivering inside 50 and hitting the scoreboard, while Viney's tackling and pressure work is about as relentless and effective as it is possible to get.

I think you can kind of sum up Viney's best attributes looking at his glorious game against West Coast. I wouldn't say he was the matchwinner himself, the way Selwood often is, but Viney's effort kept is within range, prevented the habitual "20 minute 5-goal hole" we've been plagued with, and I'd say he was the key reason we were then in a position to fight back.

The difference between Selwood and Viney is almost an embodiment of the clubs they arrived at. Selwood arrived as a club hit the absolute peak, full of confidence, talent and experience, looking for that final surge of brilliance and commitment. In contrast Viney came to a club on it's knees and in need of people prepared to never drop their heads no matter how grim things got, in a game, in a season, in a whole career.

I guess instead of the above rant I could've just posted this -

I don't think it is a great comparison.

Viney is a battering ram who reads the play brilliantly with enough endurance to get to every contest and enough skills to play AFL football.

Selwood is a champion who reads the play brilliantly, has better skills and can tolerate insane hits to the body.

Both are beyond elite for competitiveness.

Viney is a little bit more unique with his body shape and ability to use it.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
