It doesn't matter if May's age is 27 next month, what he will add to the Dees defence is what counts. By memory B.Lake was no spring chicken when he went to the Hawks and still he is a class above Frawley (ex-Demon). Who is to go out of our back six Frost or O'Mac. A difficult one to decide,O.Mac may ended up playing forward. Frost may end up on a wing at the expense of ..............

May was born 10/1/92 27 in Jan 2019 he will really meant to becoming into his prime we could potentially get 4-5 good years out of him( if we lucky another year). It’s not like he is 29/30 with only a couple of years to go

Its actually a bonus he is.   As he's in his prime, and it gives us time to develop our next generation young defenders properly.

The silly thing about that is May will be 28. He’s not going to get offered a 5 year deal. He would maybe get a 4 year front loaded on pretty good coin which wouldn’t usually guarantee top compo but it is the AFL so they’d get that if it were a 1 year deal

yep, he'll be 28 come rfa time, plus if he's forced to stay against his wishes, knowing he's just treading water and unpopular with the football dept. his form could easily drop and he ends up an end of round 1 compo for gcs

not saying that would happen, just that it's no surety he will go band 1 in 12 months time

Has May ever played forward for GC?

I seem to remember him taking a strong mark and kicking confidently for goal on one occasion.

Can anyone confirm or refute this?

With two-metre Peter and Lynch up forward, plus a backline always under pressure, May would rarely be tried forward for GC, even if he showed promise there.

I like our backs and their "back-ups". Could May's strength and aggression be useful  forward if we lose JH there.?

Spoke to a hawk supporter that thinks B Lake is the only reason they won all premierships. The missing link. Also his forced retirement the reason why they didnt win a 4th. Just goes to show how important one recruit can be for team balance

Christ, it’s bad enough when they think they’re a bloody expert on anything to do with football just because their team happens to be winning, but do you really need to lend credence to the idea?

There was a bit more than just Lake involved with those wins.

If GC are banking on a top compo pick, they're also banking on not signing any free agents themselves next season (as this would dilute May compo). Which to me seems like a very defeatist attitude from a long way out. I'm not sold. I think they'll take a good pick for him this year.

There is a big difference here. We are talking about giving up a potential top 6 pick for May (or Hogan, depending how you look at it). Hawthorn got B Lake for effectively pick 41...

I think you're missed the point.Their opinion was that it was a domino falling recruit that shifted many pieces into place ie team balance. For us, May can allow Omac to be 2nd, which allows Lever to be 3rd, which keeps Tmac permanently forward, which allows Weid to be 2nd, which allows Preuss/Gawn to be 3rd etc. Take out Lake, and Frawley is exposed, and so was Gibson. They did not mean Lake alone was the reason they won 3 premierships. Just the piece of the puzzle that allowed the others to play in their most optimum position.

Trade week is pretty darn complex you'd have to agree. Gold Coast trading out their contracted co-captain a year early to get a pick equating to what they'd get as compo a year later, balancing up the negative effect of holding on to a player and not going for the 'fresh reset. As are we balancing this issue with keeping Hogan.

I just think we have to wait a week for it to play out. As others have said. Trust JT, he has the track record. Only in a year or two will we know if this is the one recruit that shifts many other pieces into place. And as others have said, we're in the business of list improvement, not of winning individual trades. If it's overs to make a trade move that gets us a premiership, so be it.

Personally, I think if we do give a top 10 pick, then you'd expect that we'd be getting back 2nd's and 3rds, or swapping pick positions with them, in much the same way Adelaide gave two first round picks to get a 29 year old Bryce Gibbs, but in return got 2nds and 3rds, which made it more palatable. New list manager probably wants to just save face and make sure Gold Coast don't look like they're being screwed by showing the AFL world they're getting a top 10 pick. But in reality, pick swaps should show we're getting back plenty.

He won the Norm Smith when he towelled up Zac Clark, but any decent full back could've beaten him and their efficiency going forward was probably the real difference that day, especially Gunston IIRC.

The Swans they belted all over the field and won the midfield battle.

Frawley was in the best 5 on the ground against the Eagles but again, that game was all but over at 1/4 time.

Josh Gibson was one of the Hawks best players, maybe even their best player over the course of their success in that time. Burgoyne was Mr September and Hodge was too. But Lake certainly played a huge role.

The Hawks are certainly an example of drafting in a super young core then trading to fill the needs. They benefited from expansion at that time as well but their plan was spot on.

Being bold and going for the trades, then smartly finding a few more in the draft is surely our plan and if we do it well we could finish top 4 a few times in a row and from there it's a matter of the players and coaches getting it done.

If Hawks get Shiel, they will have added 3 top mids,  including a Brownlow Medallist, in 2 years of trading, without the draft.

It is a strong argument for trading for dislclosed talent, rather than drafting prospective future talent.

There is.

But only after you've built one of the strongest lists within the AFL through the draft.

Which they did from 04 - 08 and won a flag early.

The foundations were laid then and there and now they have the luxury of trading for ready made guns because of the way they've slowly let some of their older guys go. They also have arguably the strongest VFL affiliate side with the strongest pathway program.

Our core are around the 23 y/o mark. The hope is to retain most of them so that we can set up our club in a similar way.

How can Hawthorn possibly trade enough for Shiel?

If GWS are forced to offload him due to salary cap constraints, then they have just been very very lucky to be able to exploit GWS’ inability to manage a list properly.

Not sure the Giants have done anything wrong. They got a truckload of talent, gave away the guys they didn't want and kept most of the best ones and have been in contention for 3 straight years. They are looking to move Shiel on now a year before he's a free agent so they can sure up the rest of their list, make a serious play to keep Kelly and get better value now than free agency compo in a year.

That said, they'll surely be keen on Shiel picking the Saints or Blues. If he picks the Hawks they've got their work cut out to get a good deal. Maybe if he picks the Hawks they just keep him and trade out Lobb, Finlayson and if the rumours are true Scully?

clearly needs to be smarter with his physicality.. i'm all for it, but jumping and bumping is dumb. and missing games regularly for MFC will be freaking annoying.

GCS starting to put pressure on May to make a decision.  http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-10-08/trade-too-hard-to-do-if-may-delays-any-longer

I wonder whether the waiting for the Neale/Hogan deal will prompt him to reconsider his other suitors or see out his contract.

I would keep Frost absolutely. We are already getting rid of about 12 players.

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians.
