Apparently Walters could be a late out for them

That would help us considerably.

We will win this but it will be a struggle for most of the day.The backline looks better but the forward line worries me without Hogan. I am praying big jake can snag one or two and we kick reasonably.

Strangely I'm more confident without Hogan than I would otherwise be - we're more unpredictable with a smaller forward line, and Freo matched up well on the Dogs talls.

I think the last quarter fadeout against Geelong was mainly mental in that we weren't rewarded for effort in quarters 2 and 3.  When you're not getting those rewards for effort a group can drop away.  They may have been getting tired, but that was compounded by not hitting the scoreboard.

Agreed. If we'd converted early on we would have had the petrol tickets to get home. And not only that, I think we'd have kept going just as hard.

Nervous.  Very nervous.  I like the fact that Freo won last weekend as I'd much rather play them with a win on the board already, as we seem to be a side who would hand them their first win otherwise.

If we work as hard as we have during the first 3 games then we win, and we can win well.  Any drop off and we could be in big trouble.

Enjoy the game today everyone, I'll be out all day and checking updates on my phone.  I'll miss the 'reasoned' discussion that always occurs in a gameday thread. ;)

Have to keep Fyfe quiet. Have no idea what to expect today. Just hope Spencer can do his job. Would be nice to see Petracca kick some goals, watts left in the forward line for ost of the game o do his role and the most important thing is we KICK STRAIGHT! Cannot have another frustarting day like last week.

Come on melbourne get the job done.

I'm quietly confident about today. Our response to last week's disappointing conversion rate and a Max Gawn-less team, should provide enough impetus to get the job done.

Either way, I have a feeling this is a game that will really tell us where our baby Demons are at.

Im chanelling the 2011 match which I think was our last win against this mob.

It was a nice day at the MCG and I went home happy in that roller coaster year.

Mckenzie and dare I say it ,,,,, Scully had a day out with Brad Green having a picnic up forward with five sausage rolls.

I did my bit with three, four n twenties.

We are definitely a more skillful 22 than Freo, but if they play to the Ross Lyon system they will be hard to break down. Our kicking either wins or loses us the game. In all of the 3 rounds so far we have been the better team for most of the day but our turnovers remain our achilles heel.

We will either hold on in a thriller or win VERY big. Still a bit nervous, though.

If we're a finals side, we win and win comfortably. 40+ points.

I don't buy into these ultimatums. We're a finals side if we win 13 games. Granted, winnable games like today are a huge opportunity to bank 4 points, but if Freo catch us out we shouldn't all of a sudden say we're not a finals team.

From what we've seen so far we're capable of beating all of the other teams when the planets align.

I'm expecting a Carlton like game where we win but can't relax until the final siren.

I'm keen to see how Oliver looks around Fyfe - particularly at stoppages. I think we have a deeper and more tough midfield group than Fremantle.

S Hill is a concern, not so much his younger brother. If we can curb the run of Stephen, then that should cut their scoring ability by around 4 or more goals.

And I think Spencil will win the ruck dual with Sandilands. Sandi is on his last legs and I reckon big Jake  an run him ragged.

I'm predicting a percentage boosting win of ~70 points today.

Could not agree more wise one. I doubt you could be more nervous than me. This is just the sort of game we should win but have a habit of losing. I am hanging on the fact this is 2017 and we  are past that habit.

We are still learning how to win. Last week was the classic case. We should have been 6 goals up, but weren't and so ran out of gas.

To kick so poorly under a roof was inexusable, meanwhile Geelong were 17.2 at one stage!

nail opportunities Demons or else they bite

A quiz

how many teams got their first win against us anywhere and how many their first win at the MCG?

If I recall we were the first team to play Sydney at the SCG and well you know.. we lost.

IIRC Freo was definitely a first time winner against us at the MCG.

If we can smash em on the outside and score we should be ok dees by 28 points .

First game live this year with a guest who will be shouting for the dockers 1 of  345 .

GC & GWS got their first MCG wins against us. Iirc correctly the GC game was Easter Sunday 2013, the week that Peter Jackson was appointed. They did us by 79 points and Col Sylvia copped a three week ban for nearly killing Jared Brennan with an elbow to the head.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
