Why not go all out and use a motor bike helmet!

There are issues around the use of helmets. 

-Players who wear them take more risks

- If some players wear them (especially big gridiron type helmets) then they are an injury concern for other players. This is not so much the case in Gridiron as they wear protection and the hits are for the most part more controlled (as in come from one direction and are expected)

- Wearing such a helmet without the support of shoulder pads could lead to more neck issues due to the heavier weight while being knocked around.

I would suggest only available to players that have had concussion. 

no, no, mandee, definitely not a gridiron helmet. for starters it is a hard helmet and effectively a weapon, and there are other reasons. it might be good for bone fracture, ear eye and nose protection but not designed solely for concussion minimisation. it's also bad for all round vision

Helmets do not prevent concussion but they can reduce the severity.

A flexible helmet slows the the impact reducing the severity, as cars have crush zones to reduce the impact the helmet allows the head to reduce speed before changing direction. It is unlikely that a helmet could prevent concussion completely but any reduction is a benefit.

ManDee - can you leave me out of this one please. I was coming at the Gus problem from more of a self-reflexive angle, just commenting on the commentary. With a degree in literature it's the only expertise I can contribute in a discussion on the medical science of concussion-prevention or management. I otherwise have no valid opinion. But I did enjoy the upside-down bouncy head pictogram you posted. If only the umps could manage such a clean centre-bounce, huh?

On related injury issues, because of all the justified attention and scrutiny of head related injuries, would it be too negligent of me to suggest that we are also ignoring potential serious trauma  of  neck injury by now acknowledging, according to the umpires, only the most blatant, obvious and  physical attacks on that area of the body. Do we wait and see.....

You would think that Vanders' season is over at this point - big call I know, but even after 8 weeks of no footy he will still need weeks to build his fitness base back up, and by then the season may be over.  

You have to wonder if the club will give him another year or whether they don't see his body being able to stand up to the rigours of AFL footy.  I hope they give him another shot, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't either.

Ahhh, do you they rate him like Menzel...4 knee reco's.... good player (elite???) great clubman? I hope so, but then I am sad that whenever any player loves to genuinely have a crack, their body lets them down...

You get the feeling that, internally, the club rate him very highly.  I wouldn't be surprised to see him get at least another year on the list.  On the other hand they may believe that he is too injury prone and feel that they need to move on.  I have no idea what they'll do, but another season lost to injury doesn't bode well for him.

Did anyone else think that Misson looked dejected this week? Seems to had done an ok job from afar but some key injuries this year have hit us hard. Some were unavoidable

AVB needing surgery is obviously a last resort and its not looking good for him.

I think they have put some fat on gawns return date on the website. Should be 3 weeks away going by Goodwin last week.

This is a great idea. In fact, I think the whole team should wear them next time we play NM. A head butt isn't a punch, play on.

Yes. Big man with a nasty foot fracture as I said on another forum today before the club announcement. I'd be surprised if he's back in the AFL this year. If ever.

No, no DC, it is a soft helmet, that is the point. Protection is afforded by providing  deceleration, a soft helmet not necessarily the one pictured could help. Pat McKenna has gone from 4 weeks to 10-12 weeks. That's season over. Anybody know what has happened?

Given his injury history at GWS, I can't see the point to giving this bloke another year, irrespective of his contract situation. Just pay him out and move on.

So on this latest injury list it had Spencer ahead of Gawn by one week. How is Spencer tracking, is there any chance he might be in line for a call up vs the Pies?
