Apparently this was a mistake, their recruiter is still balled up the fetual position mumbling 'Mitchel Lewis???' and it got caught on the mics

Aside from our picks I really hope Sam Petrevski-Seton (now of Carlton) succeeds in the AFL environment.

The poor bugger was incredibly nervous in an interview with Ben Dixon and I recall seeing a short video of him on the AFL website a week or so ago where he mentioned that he had worked on his vocabulary and linguistics so he was confident enough to speak up during team meetings.

Seems like a great young kid and I hope he has a great career (wherever he plays at).

I wonder if not drafting a back up ruck is representive of the faith the club has in Max King getting his body right. I hope we still look for one in the rookie draft though.

So GWS go into the draft with picks 2, 15, 37 & 39 and end up having 2, 5, 14 & 20 as their first four picks. Yes, that's right, four draft picks inside the top 20 for a club who finished top 4 this year.

Absolute effing joke. The AFL can go get [censored] for the way they handled the Whitfield affair, this was clearly by design to ensure GWS got all their Academy prospects with the pathetic "bidding" system that is still being rorted by these clubs.

Emma Quayles draft analysis contains the most ridiculous, nonsensical sentence I have ever had this misfortune to read.

"The Bulldogs were in a great position to see which player the other clubs let slip through to them"

Staggering in its stupidity.

Thanks, I needed the rant 'cos I have nobody here to complain to ...

The previous model would have seen them get all those players but at picks 37 and 39 and kept all their later picks too...

If you have some improvements to the bidding system - please share them.

put a limit on the no. of academy picks which get a discounted rate

or have a sliding discount (reduces with each extra academy pick)

add more stringent conditions on what constitutes an academy pick

Agreed. It's not like every year the traditional clubs would be able to recruit four father son players each year

Let's not forget that Gold Coast had 4 picks in the Top 10

4 picks in the top 10......

Let's not forget that they lost some very good players which enabled them to acquire those picks in the first place.

Darcy Cameron would have been a great get... he was available at 46.

200cm Key fwd/ruck. Very agile. Good kick. Perfect for our needs. Plays like Rory Lobb/Peter Wight.

I still think Hannan would have been available at 64... and Johnstone was a rookie at best.

Take the Riverina out of GWS academy zone. Give them their own TAC team - the Albury-Wagga drop bears.

Any player who plays for a TAC, SANFL or WAFL side is removed from the GWS academy. To be eligible for the GWS academy you can only play local football, NEAFL and representative football for NSW teams. If you join a Victorian or South Australian junior development team then you should be treated like those players. At the moment it's double dipping and billing the AFL twice.

Setterfield played for the Sandringham Dragons (+ Caulfield Grammar) this year. He's from Albury. Literally walking distance from Victoria! That's a long way from growing the game in non football areas of NSW. He got TAC coaching like every other kid from bayside Melbourne and also had his own set of coaches in the Giants academy.

Cummings played for North Adelaide. Broken Hill is a traditional football area and feeds in to the South Australian system. With a little more money the SANFL clubs could streamline junior development for players in South Western NSW should they choose to head to Adelaide like many kids from that area do.

Taylor and co obviously think that there is value in recruiting from the state leagues rather than 18 year olds from the VSFL. It seems a bit of a moneyball tactic for our later picks.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
