WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - PATRICK MCKENNA

Went to a draft information night the year we drafted Rohan Bail - his Qld Senior League highlights reel looked fantastic.  Loved Rohan but the AFL is a big step up.  Best of luck to Pat!

And I think this will be the thing. Will he be able to execute those skills under the pressure of AFL? You generally need speed, a side step or a great footy brain to give yourself the time to hit targets

Reminds me of Nat Fyfe when he was a rookie.

that's terrible

It's not the cap, all about draft points. GWS open up a spot on their list, allowing them to take another pick to the draft which we gave them, giving them more points to use on academy players.

Good to see we're still making the most of the points system, even after the rules changed.

Good to see we are maintaining a very healthy and mutually beneficial trading relationship with GWS. So next year if for some unfathomable reason we don't land Fyfe as an FA  we can get Josh Kelly or better still both of them.

Their willingness to palm us rejects - sometimes at great cost - won't really make much of an impact if we try and poach one of their best 3 to 5 young stars!

I don't normally take much from highlight packages but this kid has a very well weighted kick. Time after time. Floating 20m dinks might not look very glamorous but this is exactly what we need with our delivery to Hogan and Watts - so they're not continually stuck trying to offer them up to each other.

Next thing you'll be saying he's a better kick than Col Garland. Has the world gone mad?

His name does not start with a J, am suspicuous, good country footy area didn't Tingay and Rigoni hail from those parts?

From memory Tingay was from Shepparton and Riggers from Myrtleford.

Gisborne aint that far from Melbourne!

If you read the summary about Patrick on the MFC website, it seems as if the club have been waiting for the opportunity to get him to the club.  It seems as if they see something special there and it wouldn't surprise me if we've played the long game here.

We wanted him initially, we missed out and then monitored him for the next two years, you don't do that unless you see a player in the making. He's had his injuries and now it's time to see what he's got, perhaps another smokey from the recruiters.

Sounds like exactly the same story as Ben Kennedy

Don't know anything about him, but welcome to the Red and Blue!

The best thing I see here is the continuity from Roos to Goodwin. To pick up a kid we were looking at even before Goody came to the club shows how much everyone was on the same page. Good signs. Reckon he'll be a handy pick up.

Or that the people doing the list building are the same, and Goodwin like Roos lets other people do their jobs.

That's what I was thinking, but Kennedy had enough time at colonwood to prove that he was a VFL dud, McKenna could still be half decent.

Is Mckenna going to be better than the ones we got rid of? I can also understand we have to improve our list.

Probably not, but the difference is that our delistees were of a known quality (not that good), whilst McKenna is still a bit of an unknown (you never know, we may strike gold)

Watching his highlights he reminds me of a young Liam Picken. Courageous, good mark, shows desperation.

They obviously hope so.

Less known than Newton et al, more known than a 6th round draft pick.  I have low expectations, but I'm comfortable with the strategy.

Sometimes the devil you know may not be better than the devil you don't know.

Those delisted have been looked at pretty closely by our guys and have been found NQR.....they must think that McKenna has something they can work on with better expectations than what we gave had.

Poetic to snag the man after giving up the pick he was selected with. Now if we can bag J.Kelly next year . . . although he seems to have stacked on a bit of weight in the off-season - https://www.google.com.au/search?q=josh+kelly+afl&client=firefox-b-ab&biw=1252&bih=582&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjm-6iE6OvPAhUK6GMKHbWmBaAQ_AUIBygA&dpr=1.09

His old man's name is Phil too, so we might not want to risk it? ;)

I'd be more than happy for the MFC to offer Phil Kelly a position in the recruitment dept. - independently of our signing Josh next year of course, which will no doubt become the biggest story in the lead-up to the 2018 GF.

Seriously, a recruiting scout getting $680k a year! What does the GWS head of recruitment get paid?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
