Redleg is correct. This is not as it seems and you can listen to the interview as often as you like, Mitchell has put on a master class in politics and PR.

I was told by a very recently retired Premiership player today that Sam is not only very close to Simpson but also to Hale who is at Freo so is happy to go to Perth and have some time as Asst Coach to Adam and the plan has been in place for a few months that it would happen in 2018, with next year being his final year with Hawks.

Problem is that a small group of Senior Players that have played for much, much less than market value for years to keep the side together, very recently approached Clarkson to complain that several Recruits were being brought in on bigger money than what they had been getting.  Sam was particularly aggrieved at rumours of $500k for Vickery, which unbelievably is more than what Sam was paid in 2016 & more than what he was going to get in 2017.  Staggering that Hawthorn would pay Vickery more than Mitchell.

Bottom line line is that Clarko was very Dictatorial and basically told Sam that is was happening and perhaps he might like to get over to Perth a year earlier.

Simpson is a good friend of Clarkson. Mitchell is good friends with both Simpson and Hale. If he plays 1 or 2 years then is an assistant for 3 then it may be that he returns east to replace Clarko at Hawthorn. Essentially sent to learn the ropes under a trusted associate of Clarkson. Also means his kids will be back settled in Melbourne before secondary schooling.

And yes the fact the Hawks are moving on their reigning best & fairest after extending his contract mid season does shout SALARY CAP SQUEEZE to everyone cept Hawks fans who insist their players are lillywhite amateurs!

Pies and Crows out of Rockliff chase.

He is a real chance of a get for us if we want him.

Lions want him and his salary out. We can afford to pay him his last year big salary and then less for the next few years.

Dunn and next years 2nd rounder could get him, with maybe a little tinkering needed.

I think he could be great for us. 40 possies player who can also kick goals.

For someone with Rockliff's ability that seems way under even if they do want his salary out of the club. I would be absolutely over the moon about us getting him I seem he can be an excellent addition and in the right age bracket.

You have some good history of getting the inside word so I hope you're correct and we are chasing him. I would've thought the Lions would want at least a first round pick for him though. We are ineligible from trading our future first rounder am I correct?

I'm also like the idea of us getting Matera, he's inconsistent but I think would be good having him as a side show for Jeffy and it might teach Jeffy some leadership skills in the same way he did for Eddie Betts.

We can trade our future first rounder as we used the required two within a four year period in selected Weideman and Oliver. I'd rather stay away from Rockliff though. There's no doubt that he's a talented player that would improve our midfield, but he seems to not fit the no [censored] policy. Hang on to the first rounder, use it next year or on someone that would help to maintain the cultural improvement that we've seen develop since Roos took over.

Interesting. I haven't heard a whole lot about his character. I can understand him wanting out of Brisbane given how terrible they are doing and it also sounds like they are suffering from exactly what we had in previous years, bad management. But if he is a [censored] then yes I wouldn't be as keen to get him, as you say Roos and co have worked very hard to build a team of guys that are all pulling in the same direction. If bringing him would take mean our culture takes a backward step than yes I would agree that we shouldn't chase him.

I should add though many would argue Jeffy would've fallen into that same category and we got him to buy into our direction and changing culture, so if Goodwin and Viney see the same sort of intent from Tom we shouldn't rule him out.

You could well be correct in that his bad attitude (at least that's what I perceive) is a result of him becoming frustrated with the rabble that is Brisbane. I'm not totally against bringing him in if the club deems it to be for the best, but I would definitely be doing my homework on his character before doing so. We'll soon find out, I suppose.

Rockcliff apparently shows little respect to his teammates especially junior ones and is to known have a tyrant like leadership style.  He and Hanley went to Bali for their end of season break while most of the team went somewhere else; nothing inherently wrong with that but doesn't show a lot in the way of leadership from the captain and vice captain.  He recently got into hot water over some derogatory tweets.  Very poor role model. Also has big tickets on himself.  On the football side he gets a lot of possessions but doesn't do a lot of damage.

Compare him to our own Captain Jones who arguably has gone thru tougher times than Rockcliff to see where the latter has failed as a leader and as a senior player/role model.  It is no wonder their young players want out year, after year!

We don't need his type around our club.

I hope he hasn't registered under a different name because the Code of Conduct says he needs to get permission from the owner of the site to do that:-

The principle here is that we are trying to prevent poster abuse and derailment of thread.

And on that note ... back to trade whispers ...

I've heard it spoken around the traps that ANB is being sought by Adelaide.

Anyone else heard this and if it's correct, would we let him go and if so, for what?

Considering he can't make the senior side I'd say we would definitely see what's on offer. Would they trade him for Lyons? We'd probably be getting the better end of a lopsided deal there. Otherwise not sure.

It's not surprising, S.A boy who hasn't got a huge amount of opportunity in the seniors, though i suspect he'd love to stay here with Billy

It's not that ANB isn't talented enough to make the 1s it's that we have too many players that are inside mids.

He needs to develop his run and carry but is a talented player and i personally wouldn't like to see him go cheaply

unfortunately for anb his disposal is average, he lacks speed, and both strength and endurance seem to be issues for him at this level.

if the crows want him, they're not going to be offering much for a former third round pick who can't get a game in a side that didn't make finals.

He's also predominately an inside midfielder who is sitting behind Oliver, Jones, Tyson, Viney, Brayshaw, Petracca and so on so it's always going to be tough for him

I seem to recall his endurance was considered his big strength when he was drafted.

Also, I don't think it is simple as saying he wasn't getting a game in a side outside the 8. He wasn't getting a game behind a quality collection of inside mids, it is our main strength, and other clubs would be aware of this.

I would say he would stay if their offer is anything less than a second rounder.

You do realise that Sam M has 1 year left whereas Tom M has possibly 10 years? Not many mids are as damaging as Sam M, but to say that Tom M. is overrated is ridiculous. He was in the top 3 players for the Swans in the GF.

The player at Hawthorn who is irreplaceable is Roughy.

I get that he doesn't rate Mitchell that highly. Had a good game in the GF but some do and are never heard of again.

Hes a good accumulator but not so sure he is that damaging and not so sure he runs both ways and can defend as well as he accumulates. Sam M can accumulate and doesn't defend much but he is so damaging when he gets the ball.

Anyway, just saying I can see where he is coming from. Time as usual will tell. Remember the Swans kept him in the two's for a long time as there were knocks on his game. They don't appear too stressed about keeping him....

It's amazing that ANB played as an inside mid all year, yet in his first season he played as a HFF and did quite well (for a first year player).

I'll admit, I'm a big fan of ANB, and would hate to see him leave as I think he will turn in to a handy senior player.  I'm also not forgetting that he has just completed his 2nd year of AFL.  I'm hoping he has been "developed perfectly", and will find himself being a regular senior player in 2017.

ANB needs to learn how to kick. Plain and simple. Watched him all season at Casey. He gets a tonne of possessions and then sprays his kicks.

Maybe the change in his rôle was all part of his development plan.....don't expect many games in year 2 but learn some new tricks.

I certainly wouldn't give him away cheaply, though of course for the right deal.....

I hope you're right BBB, doubt it though.  For all his flaws he is still a fantastic player and made an AA team from memory.   He would be worth an extra few inside 50s per game for us with his clearance work. Hes also one of the best tacklers in the league.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
