Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Yes I'm sure the AFL made sure he did.

Free agency open: Wells, Vickery, Mayne and others set to find new homes

Wells, 31, is expected to depart North Melbourne after 14 seasons to join Collingwood on a three-year deal worth up to $600,000 a season, while the Magpies are also set to snare Fremantle forward Mayne on a four-year deal understood to be worth more than $500,000 a season.

i wouldn't believe these figures for a moment at this time. no doubt managers doing a bit of spruiking

wells is a different category (to frawley) because age is also a compo factor (with contract $s and length). wells maybe only band 3 due to age and contract length.

but 2nd guessing the afl is a mug's game - lol

The AFL had a hand in getting us Paul Roos, a premiership coach & Peter Jackson a shrewd CEO.  Then I believe they had a say on the selection committee in choosing Fagan for Brisbane, an untried assistant coach in his first senior role.  We were also fined $500000 for not tanking, then given bail out money of $1.45mil.  Does that seem fair?

[censored], whinge, moan and complain all you like, this is how the AFL will always act. If you want it to change, stop supporting AFL by going to games, watching it on TV, buying merchandise etc.  Support another sport, if the management of this one horrifies you so much.

But that was the application of the rule. Just like the bottom team gets first pick and so on.

Frawley's contract price and length and his age etc, led to only that conclusion, under the compensation formula. We got nothing extra, it was just that we were near the bottom, which was how the rule was designed.

With Brisbane they are better off than us with their list, players to come back, Beams etc, games won, finals a few years ago and 3 flags and a GF 12 years ago. Not to mention their Academy.

Either apply the rules or don't.

I hate the ad hoc nature, of this administration of a sports competition.

PS. I would have more respect for this decision, if they came out and said that the MFC deserved one, but we are more concerned with making the non victorian teams strong, for the benefit of ratings, income and the health of the National competition. Pigs will fly.

100% agree Red. I actually am not fussed about the Lions getting a priority pick but the arguments put forward as to why we didn't get one and it is ok for Brisbane to get one infuriate me.

Chief among them is the argument we actually got a a PP in the form of Frawley. Mods please turn the filter off for a second - that is complete bull [censored]. I heard Sam McClure run this argument and it drives me nuts. As you say red that was the rule and it was designed to compensate bottom teams from being decimated by free agency (as an aside Sam McClure has become my most disliked media person. He has morphed from a gossip into someone who seems to have license to give editorials - i'm no Gen Y basher but he simply does not have the runs on the board to be credible, not to mention he is so often wrong and infuriatingly smug, can't stand his father either by the by).

The other argument that we got PJ and money for Paul Roos is similarly rubbish. As you point out all clubs get financial assistance from the AFL. And it is their interest all clubs are solvent as they have a billion dollar TV deal that is dependent on 18 teams.  But in any case the AFL have installed Fagan and Noble so they have received the same assistance we have.

The other issue is that an argument for us not getting a PP was that were the architects of our own demise. And Brisbane haven't been? Sheesh. They are 30 odd millions in debt. Their board is in disarray. They have just sacked in their second coach in the the last 3 years or so (with Voss getting the axe because they apparently thought they had Roos). Their culture obviously sucks. They can't retain players. They've brought in duds. And under Voss they traded away their picks for players like fevola thinking they might snag a flag. All this after having won three flags a decade ago. Beggars bloody belief.

And don't get me started on us not getting a PP as punishment for tanking.

And now the best comment of all.

Greg Swann, the Lions CEO, who said we didn't deserve one and led the fight against us getting one, though we were worse and had a worse list, history and results, said that the AFL were totally correct in awarding the Lions a pick,  as they fitted within the criteria for getting one.

AFL fl og and brown noser of the year.

He's there to teach, nurture & develop that list, I think.

Then maybe he will step aside into a similar role he had with the Hawks, as they get a more high profile coach to take the lead on matchdays. Maybe even Clarkson?

Just to add some ridiculous commentary, the AFL has just tweeted the following:

"Peter Schwab confirms Lions keen to use pick to advantage the club most".

Really? Well, that's thrown the plans of all other 17 clubs into disarray.

Given how badly they are run it is no certainty they will use the pick to 'advantage the club most'

Part of me is annoyed by this but if getting Roos (with the AFL's assistance I should add) has taught us anything it's not just about draft picks it's about management. The lions need to get their S--- together, only that will change their fortunes.

We had all the top draft picks you could hope for but development and player management was so bad we managed to stuff it up so many times it's not funny.

They got their priority pick, it will do nothing unless the club as a whole improves.

Frawley for pick 3. Sylvia for pick 23. We were looked after.

But the Lions didn't have to wait for a year under their new coach to get the freebie like we did with Frawley. Didn't have to give up a player either.

There list is certainly better placed than ours when Roos took over.

That said, we have to aim to beat the clubs at the top not worry about what the ones at the bottom are doing.

DS. We actually need to consistently beat the clubs below us, and at least some above for us to progress.

Just to remind us how lacking in integrity and transparency the AFL is Brisbane get a Priority Pick.  Melbourne were denied a pick a few years ago despite having a worse record than Brisbane.  Nice work Gillon.

Yes

I am amazed and angry

Example 25 of AFL bias to non Victorian clubs.

Didn't the Lions win 3 premierships in 2001-2003.

Melbourne's record of 16th  17th  17th is worse than the last 3 years at the Lions.

WTF

One thing I think is often overlooked is that although we got Roos & PJ with arguable degrees of assistance from the AFL, few choose to acknowledge that without Neeld we wouldn't have Jason Taylor, and without Schwab we may not have Todd Viney, both of which are integral to our rebuilt list full of talent.

Good luck to Brisbane, but I've not seen a revolution in their list management/recruitment department, and I think this could very well hold them back still.

I find the idea of Mayne on a four year deal worth more than $2m to be a lot less believable. Someone needs to put Buckley in a straitjacket if that's even mildly true.

And a constantly injured one at that.

Mayne also 4 years at $500k per year.

Bucks is only worried about 2017 to make finals or go. Stuffing their list management.

Is it too late for us to apply for special assistance?

After all, I'm pretty sure you'll find that, despite our improvement this year, we have won less games in the last five years than Brisbane and on that criteria we deserve a priority pick as well. I'm prepared to take an end of first round selection like the hypocrites Lions (and trade it for Tom Rockliff if the AFL insists).

PS: For the benefit of the nannies out there, the above is tongue in cheek apart from the fact that the AFL is so conflicted and lacking in integrity that if it's love child GCS applied with that story, it would probably get one.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
