Who cares if they get one. They're an absolute basket case and one extra draft pick ain't going to solve their problems.

I do, i want them to get rejected, out of spite if nothing else

Agreed - I wouldn't be against a PP but I don't think it will really help. They've already got their academies, they just need to wait for those kids to come through. If the AFL want to help they can start by funding their training facilities/HQ and getting a competent CEO. Leigh Matthews should be removed from making FD decisions also.

That's a good point re Matthews. Wasn't he supposed to be the 'toe-cutter' from a board level to set things on a better path?

If anything, since his arrival into that role it's only descended into further chaos.

The AFL started last year by getting Swan in as the CEO....I'm glad we got the first shot and pick of the bunch with PJ a few years back.

Swan likes media street a bit too much I think.

Why does it have to be a top priority pick? Why can't they give them an extra second round pick which can be used as trade material.

I still think the AFL painted themselves into a corner with this thing when they didn't give us SOMETHING when we requested it. Now that we are building and looking better it makes their decision justified and makes it harder to give anyone else a PP.

Tough decision because they are looking in a lot of trouble.

While they are down at the moment, so were we for a lot longer and not off 3 flags a few years before.

We were denied a pick a couple of times, as the AFL said we had injuries which affected results and a good young list, that would improve. Same goes for the Lions.

Then again the AFL makes it up on the run.

Agree RL under Neeld we were as low as you can get on win/loss, percentage, record low Brownlow votes, you name it we were a joke but did not qualify for a PP . So that set the precedent, in my opinion, that the PP does not exist anymore, short of a Man U air crash tragedy scenario.

much as I would like to stick it to brisbane for them denying us a priority pick I think we need to move on and agree they can have a late round 1 pick. But they also need to address all of the underlying problems they have with player retention, [censored] poor coach, president, recruiters, etc...the AFL needs to move away from dangling priority picks on teams that fail. i would love to see the bottom 4 or 6 teams draw lots to get the draft order for the first 4-6 picks just so that we remove any incentive for teams not trying.

Gill speculating out loud what the AFL may offer Brisbane.

Is it unreasonable for them to get a PP given we were knocked back a couple of years ago?

IF they give the Lions a Priority pick, it better be this year 2016, they need it.  And some assistance off field, to get that culture right, as its gone sour over the last 4 - 5 seasons.

The AFL can't let that culture go as it is any longer, or it will become chronic.

We all need a fit & firing Lions, up North.

They can't possibly justify it given the reasons that were given for denying us one.

since when did the afl feel the need to justify anything, and when they have tried to explain, when was it ever logical, consistent or transparent

Some have said they want Brisbane to have their request refused out of spite.

I actually want Brisbane to get a priority pick, also out of spite. Watch all the good it does them. Watch them keep on sooking and losing respect.

Voss going into meltdown because "We didn't have any help when we were down"... in 2013. When their massive slump amounted to just two season with less than 10 wins.

I think they should "trade places" with Hawthorn. Complete lists and staffing. Give Leppa a five year deal. Give Robinson a five year deal and the Captaincy and a bunch of tickets to the summer festivals.

Then we can all have a laugh at those smug Hawthorn supporters who won't have anything to do in September for decades to come.

The Lions need help. It just need not be draft assistance.

The reason they are in this pickle is due to horrible administration. Pure and simple.

When you sack a coach, you need to be pretty sure that you have a better alternative (or at least an alternative that isn't worse). While Vossy's record was far from enviable, the main reason they sacked him was because they thought they could still land Roosy. If they had done their homework, they would have realized that Roosy was entering end game negotiations with us by the time they pulled the pin. They then had to scramble for a stop gap option and sadly, Leppa was it. It wasn't like there was a surfeit of clubs beating his door down.

The best thing that ever happened to the Brisbane Lions was the three peat. However, it seems they have been in perpetual slumber since then. They need a PJ style cleaner I believe.

That was meant to be Greg Swan wasn't it? Swans definitely got the experience but it is very difficult stopping a free fall at a club like Brisbane where the slightest drop in success means they lose fans quickly. The fact they are not a desireable destination in terms of position + being a non AFL state will make it very hard to stop this free fall.

Essendon will come back fairly strong next year whereas the Lions will likely head downwards.

I'm happy for them to have a priority pick, just not in the first round. I'm a big fan of the second round priority pick to help equalisation. It will be interesting for the AFL because they need to get their wording right to make sure they a) dont have to give Melbourne a priority pick (which will [censored] off the competition something shocking) and b) everyone doesnt go up in arms.

I wouldn't be sooking too much if they awarded Brisbane a pick.

The AFL have been pretty good to us I would've thought since the dark days of 2011-2013:

  • Instrumental in us getting Peter Jackson
  • Instrumental in us getting Paul Roos
  • Awarded more than fair compensation for losing Sylvia (Vince via pick 25 traded to Adelaide)
  • Awarded more than fair compensation for losing Frawley (Brayshaw via pick 3)

Frawley was one of most important players and, for all the whining we used to do about Sylvia, he was easily first 10 picked each week when he left.

Any team would have got exactly the compensation we did for those players. It is decided by a formula and what we received fits within the formula.

Sylvia was a lazy bum who got well paid for 10 years

His behaviour at Fremantle summed it up beautifully

He didn't care.

Am I the only one who just felt a big fat wave of indifference when reading this?

I feel like I should care and I should be outraged after we were turned down whenever that was, but I just don't.  If they haven't got the system to nurture and develop - and they clearly don't at present - one extra pick isn't going to make a lick of difference.  It probably wouldn't have for us, either.  Their club is a long, long way from being any sort of threat to anyone.

I'm just glad this is all someone else's problem now.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Good luck to them.

The worst it'll do is push one of our picks back a place, which means little in the scheme of things.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
