THE MOST AWESOME POST MATCH THREAD EVER!!!

Recommended Posts

A few things that I absolutely loved:

Gawn work around the ground, some of the contested marking was amazing

we actually beat up the Hawks, that team has intimidated us for too many years

Jack Watts and his new found Mongrel, went after Mitchell, went for contested balls, bull dozed his way through packs

Viney and Jones

such an awesome afternoon, bring on the Power!

GOODNIGHT DAWKS

The best part about that was I thought Watts was gone when he ran in to the two Dawks. In a split second I went from "shit, we've stuffed this up" to "OMG I THINK WE MIGHT WIN". Gives me shivers seeing it again.

Bloody awesome kick by Watts and finish by Tyson.

Where do people rate Tyson now? Anyone rate him yet? Has had an outstanding and, dare I say it, 'elite' second half of the season. Averaging 25 disposals this year too (career best). I reckon he's going to be special, because when he's on song he's a goal kicking mid and they're worth their weight in gold.

Imagine him playing alongside a more experienced midfield too.

Funnily enough, all season I've thought dom has been going well, and compare him a lot to rory Sloane. So I just used footywire to compare the averages, rory averages 1 kick more a game, similar marks, scores and score involvements and only 2 tackles less a game.

His numbers seriously stack up this year.

When is he out of contract? Very important re-signing. You never hear much about Dom and his love of the club, unlike some others

He is a star.  Opposition supporters drool over him, hes judged too harshly by a lot of posters here. Hes now a fair chance to win the Bluey, after coming 2nd in 2014. Mind you it would need to be some effort to beat out Gawn or Viney.  But he has been superb.

I wonder if Damian Barrett has seen him play yet?

It's because Watts is now a gun, he takes the contest on, he isn't afraid to go in hard, and his skills and footy brain are elite.

Isn't it so bloody wonderful to see this guy blossom into a star?!

He won't leave. Out of contract next season and isn't a real extrovert type when it comes to that stuff. Loves the playing group amd gets on exceptionally well with coaches.

A mouthful, but accurate. Perhaps a worm bamboozler for short? :)

According to the AFL Rioli's bump on Oliver was one of the "best moments" of the round.

Pretty clear that he won't get cited.

I can't imagine the outcry if it had been the opposite. Clarry has had a few interesting moments this year, bitten and now this. He strikes me as a lad who doesn't forget things in a hurry.

Wonder how they rated scumbag Mitchell's punch in the face to Watts.

We would have been delighted to see the bump if it was Oliver giving it to Rioli. Fair play, carry on.

I think it was a fair bump.

The spear tackle was a different story.

I reckon we've managed Oliver superbly. This midfield. Seriously. So exciting.

Possibly, but still. He was in the VFL for several weeks and he looked like an elite clearance player against Hawthorn. For now, I'm taking him over Petracca and Brayshaw as our next big star

10 goals 8 for the year isn't exactly breaking the record books, but yeah he does seem to get forward for a goal more than others and hopefully he can keep bringing that up.

Certainly I think he's now edging ahead of his 2014 season so that's good progress after injury hurt him last year. I still think he needs an uninterrupted preseason or 2. He put on size this year but I think he can back that up and increase his endurance and speed.

He needs to kick the ball more when he's out in space and he needs to find a practical right foot kick to get the ball in to space when required. Just a safe chip on the right. Certainly his kicking has improved since the start of the year.

His movement and hands around the contest have always been great and they are getting even better. His tackling needed work and he's improving in that regard.

A couple of times Rioli picked up players from the legs and drive them almost head first into the ground, reminded me of an illegal Rugby tackle. I think they actually paid a free against him for the first one then play on was called for the next. Surely these sorts of tackles constitute a dangerous tackle and would be worthy of being reported. Am I being too harsh?

No not at all. Cyril continually operates on the limits of what is acceptable. He is after all the master at tacking, a la Aaron Davey, except Aaron was fair.

A few years ago it was chicken winging players, that is Cyril grabbing players by one arm in a tackle but lifting their arms up and backward as they moved into a contest and causing maximum damage. We saw very similar behaviour yesterday. Attempted spear tackles on two occasions as well as the shirtfront on Oliver that was high but not paid, no doubt Cyril will get off but don't ask me why.

Well that would be a disgrace, and condones just lining blokes up and smashing them into next week. Seriously he gets such a golden run that bloke. he should get a month for that.

I agree, he looks the best of the 3 at this point in time. His play will be suited to tough finals footy.

He has lifted his game inside, in the clearances, this year. He is becoming utterly dominant at stoppages. With Viney, Jones and now Oliver all strong in that area, and the competition's best ruckman, we are now starting to really get somewhere in the midfield.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
