MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 9

Salem is dropped as he has been performing well below his ability. Hasn't been many chase down tackles like last year. I support him being dropped.

They showed faith in him by bringing him straight back in. I am liking the new standards.

He isn't playing because he hasn't been selected. That doesn't prove he is a better or worse player, as we know selection is not an absolute science. Roos has only recently admitted mistakes in selection.

I am just giving my opinion as to who I think is the better player. I am not potting Garland, who has been a great servant of the club.

I just think that while it is not a huge difference, we are better with Dunn than Garland.

No doubt that OMac is part of the future, while Dunn and Garland are nearing the end of their AFL careers.

I am not all that upset by the "omission" of Christian Salem this week...

The kid just seems to be an automatic inclusion whenever fit but so far this season, from an outsider's view, he seems to just be coasting along...

This may just be a kick in the ring piece to say "You need to earn your spot mate"

I think we look really good with Bernie taking the kick-ins and I don't believe that Christian has been offering all that much outside of this role...

If there was a stat for broken tackles against then, unfortunately, I think Christian would be leading so far this season

Go back to Casey, work hard for what I think will be more than 1 week, and knock the selection panel's door down to get back in!

Go Dees!

No one gets a game without merit.

Good isn't it.

Harder and Harder

Has to be a good thing :)

Surely Brissie are taking the [censored]. They aren't seriously going to play 3 debutantes at once are they? Those 9 changes have to be smoke and mirrors. Nibbler getting his chance will be great. He is going to go hard at it to keep his spot. Exciting times.

Hope to see ANB in the midfield. Kid will become a gun. Have a good feeling about this.

Surely ANB must be in. Even though it has been said here that he was competing for the in/under roles (Viney, Jones, Tyson, Oliver) I felt that he was a must in last week against the doggies.

Well the way I see it is as follows, Dunn is a better kick, longer and more accurate, he is a better mark, is physically stronger, is less intimidated by opponents, is more effective up forward, is prepared to run and take the play on, is quicker  and is better on the big guys. Think that is a good start. He was our regular full back and was pretty good over the last few years.

To me Garland is a timid flanker being asked to play key position and it is not working.

I would have preferred Garland to be dropped too but I think you're forgetting just how poor Dunn's form was prior to being dropped. You're making it sound like he's a star. I think what we have learnt so far this year is neither Garland nor Dunn look like they're a part of our future anymore.

I'm guessing here (which, lets be honest, constitutes 99.7% of all Demonland posts) but I'd imagine that defensively if you don't follow the structure you'll be left out. Salem, who I imagine is everything Roos would like off Half Back in terms of skill, is left out yet Garland and Michie stay in. I think it's true for Dunn too. I have a suspicion he got dropped for playing too 'individually' within the zone.

I think decisions are being made about structures and game style first, so that we develop a team plan that works - and players that can fit within that.

I can't come up with another reason why Salem misses.

According to Demonland statistics at the time of writing this post there are 1,110,105 posts on the Melbourne Demons forum. That means 33,303 are not guesses. I find that number hard to believe.

I'm fine with Salem being dropped to find some form in the VFL. He's been underwhelming this year. But I'm a fan. He hasn't been the same player since he did that hammy a while back. Hoping he can string together some consistent form in the second half of the year.

As for Col, well, I'm not Dunn's biggest fan, but he is definitely a better option than Garland. I don't think either are in our plans going forward, but they're getting games because we're deficient back there. After his horror hand ball that inexplicably went straight to the opposition and created the first goal against GCS, Col managed to limit his errors for the majority of the game. But last week... wow. I have not seen a player with so much experience regularly misjudge the ball in flight and lose his opponent so easily as Colin Garland. He is a lovely guy. He did have a place a couple of years ago, but he is seriously cooked as a footballer. He's soooo reactive and as many have pointed out, is timid in the contest.

There was a contest in the GCS game at half forward. Garland was there with his man and the ball was in dispute. There were two other Melbourne players with opponents around them. They both attacked the contest, but Garland stayed behind his man, our two guys lost the contested ball, Col didn't impact the contest at all, GCS whisked the ball up the other end and scored. This indecision of his is costly. That's why I love what Hunt's injected into the defence. He just takes the game on at all costs.

I suspect they'll give Col another go at it and if he can minimise his errors, he'll probably play the following week, but he won't provide a lot of offence and he won't fill me with much confidence when he gets it.

I just don't see why people get their knickers in a knot about players being out of form. Salem is out of form, needs to go back into the VFL and find form before coming back into the team.

It happens with young players, it happens with older players. ANB should've been in the team last week while his form is good; as it stands, he'll probably only be able to string together 2 strong AFL games before his form drops off, and there's nothing wrong with that (except the folly of match committee ignoring him).

That is close to worst analysis I have seen on Demonland! Dunn is a pathetic mark. Makes Dawes look like Stewart Loewe!

Roos has been quoted as saying ANB, OMac and Kent will all play. That might mean Harmes or Hunt slide out of the squad.

Will be Harmes then, we have way too many inside mids and not a lot of speed.

Our only real outside runner is Stretch.  Hunt should play.

Personally I prefer Dunn, but reading between the lines of a few comments from Roos and other coaches, I think he is struggling to play the role asked of him. We are implementing a new style of defence and perhaps Dunn isn't learning the new way quick enough.

Might not be the answer, but it's a better result for us. To me Dunn has far more attributes than Garland.

It might make more sense if OMac comes in and Garland plays a different role with Jetta out.  That's what I expect.

Dunn is a better mark than Garland? Respectfully disagree. Dunn's overhead work has been embarrassing, especially this year.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
