Dean Kent contract

We're reading too much into it I'd say.

I am getting more confident that we are becoming a club that players won't want to leave, unless they are not getting a game.

Very good get DA - it sure does!

The complete relevant excerpt: "...Kent wants to secure his future in Melbourne beyond 2016. “I want to play some good footy and get my name out there (i.e., in context of bolded sentence, in (= at) Melbourne). Obviously, I’d love to stay at the Dees for as long as I can. I’m out of contract so there’s no pressure on me to perform or anything like that, but it’s in the back of my head and you think about your contract"...". Still not sure about that last sentence - possibly a misspoke as supposed earlier. It's not like he isn't performing!! Possibly he meant that if he hasn't given good reason for a new contract already, this year won't add much?

Yeah, it's Dean Kent, hardly a wordsmith.

The fact that he said all this before a ball was bounced makes a big difference, he's never put a block of form like this together before.

No one looks like they're enjoying this team form more than him IMO, nothing to see here.

I suspect it's a transcription issue and Kent is praising the club's approach.

Try adding an ellipsis.

I’m out of contract so . . . there’s no pressure on me to perform or anything like that, but it’s in the back of my head and you think about your contract"

Didn't Vince extend for another year?

Skuit, I AM IMPRESSED! I used them in my own post (and often do in my 'job') but never knew they had a name.

And you are onto something there, definitely.

I leave this day a wholer person...*

I believe this to be true also, but the free agents update from the afl only lists Dunn. Any chance they have made a huge cockup and posted the wrong year?

Still some big names we have to sign by the end of the year. I heard Garlett isn't too far from signing on for another few years but it's guys like McDonald and Tyson that will most certainly attract the most interest from opposition clubs. Despite that, I think both will resign.

That was the 2017 free agency list not 2016.

*Aposiopesis is the rhetorical device. Marked by an ellipsis. If you're using an ellipsis for your 'job' be sure to enter spaces between the ellipsis points.

WOW! (sorry, all, I haven't left the day yet...)

Ellipsis I recognised as a word; but aposiopesis? NO WAY! Of course, my Mammoth Macquarie confirms it.

Thanks for the ellipsis advice - I had been negligent in this regard.

And, now; it may be wise if you and I draw down the curtain on this erudition. Our Demonland colleague natives will be getting restless (= pizzed)

I can't believe the hysteria over a simple quote. What is Demonland becoming? Twitter?! Everyone is outraged about everything!

Skuit's grammatical correction explains the context of the quote perfectly. Kent was basically saying that, yeah, he's out of contract, but the wonderful coaching group aren't heaping pressure on him or threatening him to perform (as we know they've done to other underperforming players who are OOC). This is likely due to his interrupted pre-season coming off hamstring surgery last year. Essentially, he's saying the club aren't putting the pressure on him in a contract year, probably because they're pretty happy with his progress.

However, it's always in the back of his mind that he's OOC and he needs to perform if he wants a good value contract.

It's not that difficult.

Dear Lord, this thread has lost the plot.

Skuit is 100% all over it:

Try adding an ellipsis.

I’m out of contract so . . . there’s no pressure on me to perform or anything like that, but it’s in the back of my head and you think about your contract"

It's two sentences.

First, Kent says "I'm out of contract".

Then, he talks about how, though there is no external pressure being put on him to perform (because he's out of contract), nonetheless it's in the back of his head and he thinks about it.

He may have said this.

"I’m out of contract. So, there’s no pressure on me. . .  to perform. . . or anything like that, but it’s in the back of my head, and . . . you think about your contract."

Punctuation makes a difference. Specially when I get it wrong.

You might want to buy a keyboard that comes with a hyphen.

....but...he's not out of contract.....at least not until october (or is it november?)

should be "I will be out of contract at end of year. So......"

Yes, but they are his words. It is after all a transcript of a quote.  So perhaps...

"I’m out of contract?. . . so, there’s no pressure on me to perform. . . or anything like that, but it’s in the back of my head, and . . . you think about your contract."

Edit: Semantics will drive us all crazy.
