Sometimes the straight out number of frees stat can be deceptive. Teams don't necessarily have to have approximately the same number of frees for a game to be 'fair'.  Teams shouldn't be awarded frees if the frees aren't there just to even up the count.  We've all seen games where frees have been awarded to a team/player incorrectly.  Umps shouldn't turn around and try to find frees to make up for it. It is the old saying 'two wrongs don't make a right'.

The above isn't in reference to any particular game yesterday, rather it ismy opinion on the issue as a whole.

Was on Sunday footy show, Bulldogs are +67 in free kick count at the moment. Glad this is under scrutiny before our game, will make umpires think twice this week hopefully.

Ah yes, Razor Ray. I thought a good game is when you don't notice the umpire. Razor has a different philosophy.

I was watching the broadcast of the North (I think it was the north game) game and commented on how the umpire was imposing himself on the game. The penny dropped several minutes later upon hearing his name. Since the Essendon game, it is with a very heavy heart I hear the name " 'Razor' Ray Camberlain"

He treats our players appeals with the benevolence of a dictator, not with a matter of fact interpretation of the RULES.

It's interesting some bring up the fact that the Dogs get a good run from the umpires - they are currently first in frees for, but we are third as well.  I think the good run from the umps, for us, has slipped under the radar a touch.

Also helps being either first to the footy or in possession of it, as is generally the case with winning sides.

Can we start a fund raiser to prolong your stay till October?

No way. I don't want to miss our 47 point grand final victory over Geelong at Kardina Park after the AFL give them special dispensation cos they don't want to travel.

Call me a dreamer... or it could be the after effects of too much baijiu.

If he was concussed and didn't fly out this morning u would assume he will be a BIG out against the poodles unfortunately.

Pretty big interpretation imo, maybe he's always been the way he is, maybe it's a response to his fathers previous issues. Maybe he's a robot.

Dreamer --- only because the AFL would never shift the grand final from the MCG as there are way too many dollars involved. Other than that, the rest of what you said seems entirely plausible to me!

Especially when the eveners come in the opposition forward half or worse still, inside 50.

We have had a reasonable run with the umps, we have often got the rough end of the stick in the first half only to have the stats magically equalise in the second. I would not consider what we have seen this year a good run with the umps.

that said, I thought we had a very good run with the umps yesterday (without having looked at any stats).

They cost us 4 points in Hobart.

I'll never forget the 23 to 4 frees against west coast at Sublaco at half time. Disgrace.

Hopefully it's just an extra precaution against flying with concussion symptoms.

He will be a huge out if not.

Could also be a neck injury.

Jack Viney is likely to get hurt quite often in his career unfortunately.

And a very good opinion it is.  The idea that the frees for each team should be equal makes no sense at all.

Yeah, we should always get more than whoever we are playing ... :):)

None of our posts compared Ablett Jnr with Snr nor made mention of Ablett Snr. We just agreed Ablett is boring, not fazed why, he just is.

On perception alone maybe he is boring. He seems like a genuine person though. I'd say that it takes character to be able to confront a fan that is going off their dial after a soul destroying loss like last nights. As the Adam Goodes fiasco has shown, perception often doesn't equate to reality. Most accounts of people who know Goodes say you couldn't meet a nicer person, yet publicly he is perceived totally differently by most fans. The saying don't judge a book by it's cover may apply?

Does anyone remember the game a few years ago where the field umpire, well infield, over ruled the goal umpire twice and took goals off us against the Bulldogs

By the way.  Does anyone know if the Garlett playing for the Suns is any relation to Jeffie?  Looked kinda strange to see the half time stats on the TV screen -- showed 2 goals to J Garlett.  Only problem was, it was in the Suns side of the stats list!  Think I saw the two Garletts together after the game.  Must admit, I'd never heard of the Garlett for the Suns prior to yesterday...

Could be spot on there I reckon. All the vision of him walking after the incident (heading off the field, walking around in the rooms, with the rest of the lads after the game) showed him moving like Hymie the robot: doing whole body turns rather than just turning his neck.

Hoping for the best.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
