Heard on SEN this morning that the Hun is reporting that Bernie has re-signed.  Nothing on the MFC website a this stage, but if true, I am rapt.

Bernie has embraced the club fully since coming over from Adelaide and is a great character for the MFC.

Yeah its in the paper.  He needed to pay two more games to trigger the clause but the club got pro active and signed him to a better deal.

To be perfectly honest, I thought this had already happened a few weeks ago...

I think I recall reading somewhere that Garlett isn't too far from re-signing as well.

EDIT: Cheers Vagg. Sorry for the scare ;)

Dawes set to take huge pay cut to hopefully fit in Hogan

Great news re Bernie.

I hope Dawes is looking at a reduced term as well. In fact, I'd probably only offer him 1 year if he gets a contract at all.

Oh!  My Kingdom for a humble hyphen!  (Hyphens are my friend!  Especially if it means the difference between whether one of our stars stays or goes...!!)

So, to be plain, we want Jeffie to RE-SIGN, and NOT to resign...!!

Signing Bernie to a new deal is fantastic for the Club.  He has truly become a 'heart and soul' player, and his contribution has greatly exceeded my early expectations.

More weekends with Bernie.... Well done MFC ;)

Anyone know how many years?

just seems for 2017

So many of these deals happen long before they are announced, the clubs use them as a marketing tool, especially with big name players like Vince and Tommy Mac.

Talk of Dawes' savage pay cut seems stupid to me. He's got the rest of the year to get back to fitness and show he can still offer something at AFL level.

If he does that - or even if he doesn't and they still want him for 1 more year - he'll get paid like an experienced AFL player, which means probably 300k minimum.

Only rookies, new draftees and the most fringe of fringe players are getting paid any less that that these days.

For us to keep moving forward Dawes needs to be a 'fringe of fringe' player.

I thought it was a 4 year contract when he came over?

I think it was, and he triggered that extension with the games he played, but the club decided to negotiate a new deal anyway that went to 2019 and paid more money.  As you would probably agree I think he has earned that new deal.

If he can't get himself fit enough to play consistent footy (or at least on the park) then he might get the ultimate pay cut...

300k is way overs for someone that can't get on the park and has no other team knocking the door down to get him. We couldn't get a trade for Dawes if we tried.

This could well be his last year at the club.

Spoke to Bernie earlier this year. Said he feels great and wants to play for 4 more years at least. Which would be the end of 2019.

We'd most likely have a nice look at his first born son if that were the case. :)

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
