Haven't been a M Jones fan but I didn't see him do much wrong today. Lots of running and no stuffed up passes by foot.

Except for smothering Harmes kick resulting in a Magpie goal !!!

Vince for Hunt - easiest of the changes. Sorry Jayden, you showed a fair bit but we need Bernie to straighten up the backline and give some midfield minutes.

Garlett for Frost - yes it's a big height change but not a big role change. Speedy pressure forward. Frost did some great things today but is still a luxury we don't always need.

Petracca for Oliver/Brayshaw - just depends on how they train. Both look a bit off full fitness. Rest one. Time for Tracc.

Bugg and Matt Jones are both limited players. Matty Jones needs to get forward more and impact with his disposals. Bugg needs to clean his game up a lot.

But they are doing a mountain of work on either wing.

You can't drop either of them without naming another hard running wingman option.

Vince could play wing, but it's not really where we need him. Garlett, Petracca, any of the other ins unless people want Stretch or Grimes aren't wings either.

If we don't run we don't win.

Thinking longer term I would give Hunt another run. Vincent and Garlett, if fit have to come in. That is 2 changes coming off a win. Tough call, Frost out and ??? I just don't know.

This I very hard

Firstly, I would take out Oliver. Great talent and will be a star but he looks tired and needs a rest. Expect him to dominate at VFL. Vince comes back in for him

If Garlett is fit then he comes in. His replacement is bloody tough. I initially was thinking Frost/Pedo. But watching the replay they were both very good. I would have to take out Hunt. Kid is EXTREMELY stiff but you've got to improve the team when you can. He'll be back though

Today was his best game in red and blue, for mine.

Hunt for Vince is the only one that seems a formality.

Oliver maybe rested for Garlett, although I'm nervous about tinkering too much with the midfield now that it's clicking and Clarry has class you can't replace. Matt Jones perhaps. Whoever it is will be unlucky.

Jeffy and Bern come back in, they are so influential to this team.

Hunt would be a stiff omission as he did everything right for a debutante but Bern is too classy to play in the 2s. Poor matt Jones has played his guts out but you would have to think he makes way for Jeffy if he is ready to go.

Trac is a good chance, but I can't see a 3Rd change. He comes in for Matt Jones if Jeffy can't get up and if Roos is game enough to play him.

I am genuinely shocked to see Oliver only had 11 possessions.

His hands in tight are just so good.

11 quality possessions.  full of poise and accurate execution. I'd keep him in.  eight tackles.  P-LAYA!!!

Not my job to pick the bloody team thankfully.  Full faith in roos mccartney and goody to make the right calls.  i'm checking out now from all conjecture, punditry and analysis.  I'll be checking back in next Sundy around 6.50pm and expecting this club to front up and represent themselves like they have the last two weeks.  Its all I want.  Mind you though I did predict Richmond to be a bottom four side this year.  I just think they're $#it.  So surely, we'll get two in a row.

I know it's hard this week, but I just can't come at Matt Jones being left out on current form.  If Garlett is fit, I think there's a higher chance of Brayshaw coming out - he appeared to me to be playing a deep forward role - Matt Jones is playing a run up and down the wings role with high game time (although not so much this week).  I can understand why there'd be reluctance to do this though - Brayshaw is a good player and he should be and will be in front of Matt Jones before too long.  I don't really like it either but I'm struggling to come up with an answer.

So glad I don't have to pick this week.  I agree that Hunt for Vince has to be done, but whoever goes for Garlett is seriously unlucky.  You've got to feel for ANB - he has kicked the door in only to find machine gun toting Rambos on the inside.  No doubt his time will come though as the season goes on injuries and fatigue set in.

I don't know who is in or out, but I do think Lumumba and Tyson hold onto the footy that half a second too long.

At some stage I would like to see one of them get a rest, even if it isn't VFL, it messes with our flow.

I would drop Brayshaw back to the VFL purely for fitness reasons, still looks unfit, and could do with a full game on the ball.

Likely INS for me would be: ANB, Vince, Garlett.

OUT: Tyson, Lumumba or Frost/Brayshaw. Petracca will need another few weeks in the VFL, as will Trengove.

Oliver possibly needs a rest. Hunt will be dropped. Lumumba will stay. Tyson will stay. Matt Jones may be under the pump.

I've been his biggest critic in the past, but I'm happy to admit that he has been terrific so far this season.  Let's hope it continues!

I think, in the cold light of day, we all agree that Vince and Garlett (if fit) are automatic inclusions.  It's just a matter of who they unlucky two are who miss.

I think AVB gets another week off too to rest that troublesome ankle.  No need to rush him at the moment.

I think this is the most realistic change too, although could be a wet moist night where clearances are key and would love Oliver smashing into the Tigers.

If it is indeed a "wet, moist night" then it would be hard to drop Oliver who, as Clint said, has such good hands in tight!  :pj:

I want to see Oliver destroy the Richmond wimps.
Give him a light week on the track and get him fresh. We can rest him against the Saints who will run us around a lot more.

Hard to drop anyone. Will depend upon injuries and match ups against Tigers. Vince and (if fit) Garlett are the only two who might come in imo.

One thing bugs me. We all say 'player x' needs a rest. Then we expect them to play their arse off in the 2s and bang the door down to get back in the 1s.

If we (you) are serious about granting someone a rest, then why have them play at all at Casey?  That's not a rest. That's just another pressure game in a different jumper. Why not give them a weekend off fully to help in their recovery?

Just a little pet hate of mine. If you want them to rest, make it a proper REST.

Can't understand why the club would drop Hunt after one game in which he did quite well and looked better as the game progressed. As much as they are doing well, I'd think Bugg or MJones might make way for Vince and/or Garlett. Petracca to play again at Casey. Or possibly Oliver might be rested. Can't see Pedo or Frost being omitted at this stage, depending on match ups for the Tigers.

The pace and intensity at VFL is far less than AFL. A game there is not as hard on the individual player. They can't be literally given a week off unless injured.

Bugg would be the first player of all time to be dropped after a 29 possession, 9 tackle game. I know he's got his limitations, but getting the ball, or tackling the opposition when you don't get the ball, are fairly handy skills that we'd like in our side, I'd have thought.

And his replacement can be Petracca,  who will be champing at the bit for some saint blood.

I like your thinking!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
