N Jones is also not having the same sort of impact he's had in previous seasons. He's accumulating the ball, but he's not as damaging as he has been in the past. I think he can still lift his game quite a bit, but agree with all the others you've mentioned above.

We all know Roosy is really big on 'know your role, play your role', and this is exemplified at these stoppages. With hit outs, blocking, and quick hands coming off as well has they have in years and Tyson is integral here

Tyson was amazing against Richmond. Back to his good old days. Good to have. He's an asset when in form, especially as he kicks goals which makes him as good as gold. 

We are so quick to dismiss players. I remember people were calling for Viney's head too. Good times.

You do understand that we have the most dominant tap ruckman in the AFL putting the ball to our advantage ?

We also have some decent clearance players for the first time in a long time.

Whilst there was a lot terrible in "those" days I would suggest there was a lot more wrong than an assistant coaches perceived set ups.

In regards to Brian Royal great bloke but not sure about great coach at AFL level

I asked him about centre bounce set up at a coaching conference his reply was the same as I learnt at Primary School

I do understand cattle was a problem, but I went along every week and watched the same players stand on the wrong side of the contest time after time. This was never addressed by the coaching staff and we were helpless. We didn't even try going defensive or reading the opposition ruckman's taps. There was a lack of imagination from Royal. It seemed to me that the set ups were incredibly rudimentary.

Some of us have said for a long time that we'll be a very good side when Jones is the 4th or 5th wheel.  If he was at Hawthorn he'd be behind Lewis, Mitchell and Hodge.  If he was at the Cats when they were winning flags he would have been behind Ablett, Selwood, Bartel and Corey.

Viney has become our number one mid.  The length of time it takes Oliver, Tyson and Brayshaw to reach higher levels will determine our eventual flag prospects.

True. And Viney now has 50+ games under his belt, as does Tyson. Oliver seems like a plug and play, but looks like being capable of a higher level pretty early on. A bit Selwood-like. Gus is the one that might take another season or so. Afterall, he is behind in games played to Viney and Tyson.

haven't heard much more, i didn't get the sense they were in any rush, but talks had started. 

it's weird with these things quite often a player signs on and they don't announce it right away so time will tell.

but Dom isn't going anywhere, very much a required player and loves the MFC

Nev and Tommy Mac at the same point as well, in talks but not sure on time frame, Nev should be pretty soon.

It's weird. Essendon have just re-signed Hooker to a mega deal and also Colyer. And yet, we have everything going for us for the time being and we have Watts, Kent, Tyson, Jetta, McDonald and a couple of others out of contract.

I'll be really disappointed in those players if their re-signings are dependent on Hogan staying.

So long as Jones was our best player, we were always going to be a bottom 8 side. Great bloke and good player, but peaked maybe 2-3 years ago when we were at the lowest point. He goes through the motions, does what is required, is reliable, but like you said, seems to have little impact. I think this is a good thing.

Hogan staying would no doubt be a consideration, but i am of the opinion he will.

I think in some cases it was the club wanting to get a read on form before making decisions, some the players wanted to see how we'd go and some the talks are just coming along slowly.

He was getting caught a bit.. But I actually can't remember the last time he was caught holding the ball.. He has really fixed that part of his game up.

Dom Tyson is a freak and will only get better.

Very good build in form as the season went on from Dom. Given his delayed start to the preseason it's probably not a surprise, and he's still yet to have a full preseason.

I think he's a better player now than in 2014 which is good progress, he tackles and defends more now and is hopefully about to recapture his knack for putting it on the scoreboard. 

A full preseason working on his speed and fitness, with a bit more work on his kicking (and right foot) and he can hopefully go to another level again.

His form at the start of the year was pretty bad by his standards, but his last month has been excellent.

The key to his improvement has been his ability to get caught far less often and his disposal has improved.

Alongside Gawn, Tyson has arguably been our most consistent performer during the second half of the season. He's been absolutely brilliant over our 'three-peat'. Will certainly get a look in the top five of this years Best and Fairest.

Agree. Its terrific to have players who play at consistently high standard. One of my favourite non MFC players (albeit one who was aa MFC player once!) is Scott Thompson. Week in week out he racks up his 30 odd possesions

It's one of the amazing things about having good players around you.

Tyson has a lot of class, but lacks the explosiveness to dominate under close attention. That means that he is a solid player in a poor team, but an excellent player in a good team. As a reference, think Jordan Lewis; good player, but excellent when you can't afford to dedicate resources to stop him.

He's playing as the number 3 midfielder in our stoppages, behind Viney and Jones. You have to stop Viney, or he'll kill you. If you can, you should stop Jones because he's more dynamic. But by the time you get to Tyson, you're just going to have to hope that your next best midfielder is going to do more damage than him.

That's how teams get better, because Tyson is getting better but will probably keep getting pushed further down the pecking order when players like Oliver, Petracca and Brayshaw start kicking on.
