Noticed Jack Watts is finally using the elite speed that we have all heard about since his draft combine results many moons ago.

Hes looking very good.

I know it's only pre-season, but does anyone else feel this is genuinely the start of something special? I'm not saying finals are a certainty this year but things just seem to be...well...'right' at the moment.

I mean all of a sudden, the club is now drafting AFL ready players (Oliver, Brayshaw), we have a reliable midfield with legitimate depth and a key group of young leaders ready and determined to bring this club back up the ladder.

Heck, even Jack Watts is clunking contested marks and laying tackles. Are we sure that this is Melbourne?

A solid spine headlined by Hulk and Maxy, a deep group of young midfielders that are both classy and tough, and role players like Garlett, Jetta and Watts all over the ground. It's coming together.

We smeared ourselves upon the Nab cup.

We thank the scum of Footscray,st kilda et al for their services.

Today I walked around to the Lockett end of the ground and braved the StKilda bogans to watch our forward line for the 3rd quarter.Watts chased down the ball giving 100% that resulted in the first Jeffy goal in the 3rd quarter.Me and the other 10 Melbourne supporters were the only ones that seemed to appreciate it down that end of the ground.

Did anyone see that absolute bellend from St Kilda (number 17) who gave Jones a free kick just prior to a throw in being taken after he grabbed him by the leg, lifted him up and threw him down? Ball was out of play at the time, was right in front of the ump.

I was absolutely giving it to him over the fence, what a mug.

Was right in front of me. Nate initiated it and sucked him (Dylan Roberton) right in, with the umpire no more than 10 metres away with a great view! Always worth a try! The Saints-heavy crowd on that wing gave Roberton heaps, which added a nice spice to the occurrence!

When Watts took that strong contested mark early on I was pretty relaxed we were going to win. A bit like that match Simon Godfrey kicked a goal on the run from just inside the 50. You just knew it was going to be our day

The main difference besides being more attacking, has been the manic pressure we are putting on the opposition and forcing turnovers.

Every player is on the same page and absolutely giving it their all when chasing to tackle .

Haven't seen much love for Bernie. Thought he was instrumental in the win and not just because of that goal saving tackle, but how good was that!

It moments like that you realise we might be turning a corner. I believe at that stage the Saints had pegged a couple back and were starting to put some scoreboard pressure on. In previous years that's exactly what would have happened - but the heart shown in individual efforts like that is the difference between getting the 4 points and letting 'should-wins' slip through your fingers. Today we just absorbed it and kept pushing that margin out all the way to the end when the job was done. There were a few other moments like it today where a player went the extra mile for the side, something we haven't seen nearly enough of in the last decade.

Was about to say the same. I think we take him for granted now.

Does what he wants. Was a much needed composed and skilful head don't back at times. I can't remember one error. He's all class.

I wonder how long Bernie can keep playing for. He's 30 now but in career best form, and doesn't rely on pace or athleticism to dominate. I hope he can play at least another 3-4 seasons!

Having Simon Goodwin taking over as coach is the best thing that could happen in regards to Bernie...

Vince adores the bloke and could very well be reinvigorated for another 3 at least

What I've liked all pre-season is that we link together better than we have for years, but skills still let them down. Early days though. We are much better in transition, and haven't really leaked goals in quick succession. Defense looks good and tight with lots of pressure but gee, Garland, McDonald (both), Grimes are going to cost us a lot of goals this year. They work so hard but some of the errors Garland makes, he shouldn't be flunking kicks and missing targets this late in his career. I think half of Saints' goals came from errors.

People say the NAB is meaningless but there is no denying there is a great deal of similarity between this ladder and what is expected to happen this year. If you moved WCE and Hawthorn towards the top, Richmond to 9th, there isn't too much out of place IMO Except of course us!

So, had there been a grand final (next weekend being available!), we would have been in it, and probably at our new favourite venue, against a team that - if I'm not mistaken - didn't have to travel out of their home state for their 3 games!

Saints will not be there, they play Essendon and Carlton  (and us) twice.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
