Watching GWS today, I would be hugely surprised if we were troubled by them. The last thing we want is complacency, but our talent should ring through...

They might have won by 40 od points but no Cameron and beating the Lions isn't anything to be too happy about.

Hopefully we come out of today with a win and no injuries.

It will be different when 4 points are up for grabs

Won't be a walk in the park, although that would be great.

Surprised that anyone is writing off GWS - a team hoping to make the 8 with all those high draft picks starting to get up steam.

What an absurd thread.

GWS have a more talented, deeper and stronger list than us.

Does it mean we can't beat them on the day at our home ground? No.

But to suggest they're average is simply moronic.

Here's a thread which tempts fate. I think we will improve this year but I'd be a little surprised if we beat them in round 1. They're the big improvers for mine.

It will take our best footy to win next week, so if they're very average, we're f'ing terrible

Watched a bit of them throughout the NAB challenge and I've been fairly impressed with them.. Definitely wouldn't be penciling in round 1 as a win, Cameron out would be a huge plus but we"ll be up against it

Will need to be a lot sharper to beat them. Im traveling from the south coast of nsw with partner and 5 kids to witness. It will be the first time for our 2 youngest. Last time was gws in canberra last season and before that Collingwood at mcg 2014 when my then 6 yr old son decided to lose himself in the crowd...not pleasant.

Change the title to Hubris. Getting ahead of ourselves if we think we wont be troubled by the giants.

Did you happen to see how much rain there'd been in Brisbane?

Skills weren't at optimum levels as a result

There is such a thing as tempting fate and counting chickens and famous words and the like and I'm not in favour of any of it

GWS midfield is still deep and highly attacking. Lots of agile dangerous players in there.

I'm not as worried about their defence, and their attack is a bit shaky with McCarthey absent, Cameron potentially gone for a week or two, and Patton still returning.

Our key weaknesses are clearances and being overrun on quick rebounds.

We don't want to end up in a shootout on their terms - its a Paul Roos special we want.

I can't see us beating them.  We'll crack in hard, but Mumford is going to be too much for Gawn and their midfield class is well above ours.  Also our backline has looked really disorganised this pre-season for some reason  and I worry we're going to leak goals.

I'll agree on the midfield class difference, there will be an element of damage control there. Though if we can make them 'uncomfortable' enough, we can neutralise their attack.

But we've all got good reason to be wild about Gawn - right now he is the in-form ruckman of the competition.

Today he played 91% game time, rucking solo against two specialist rucks (and with Nick Riewoldt getting in there too? Strange), and while he was beaten for hitouts he actually finished the game with better numbers and much greater impact than both the Saints' rucks combined.

Mumford v Gawn will be a fascinating contest, and I'd tip Gawn to 'win' on account of his marking power, his more complete off-season, and his full run of match-practice.

I agree on most, but I'm backing Mumford to play the man early on and beat the living hell out of Gawn.  The umps won't give him much protection, so Mumford will be free to crash in and nullify Gawn's size by running through him at the bounce.  We haven't seen Max play against one of the really good Rucks yet, and I have a nasty suspicion that he's not as advanced as we think from watching him dominate some fairly ok opponents.

I reluctantly rate gws.

I do have some confidence in our organisation and hardness - which I can tell you is the first time I've saf that in a looooong time.

Reckon its 50-50

would be awesome to get up. Then smash the cheats by 187 to break that other hoodoo

They are a serious football side. Don't be fooled by a practice game in wet weather. They were ready for round 1 after dismantling Sydney.

We'll need our forward pressure up super high to stop their run and carry, in particular someone to mind Heath Shaw.

Hopefully Dunn and Lumumba help our ball movement down back, get that wrong and it's game over.

Do both of the above and we are in with a shot.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
