Training - Friday 22nd January, 2016

Was at training today. Watched a number of match simulations. was quite surprised with the ball movement and accuracy of foot passing skills. Namely Vander Jones White Watts Oliver Brayshaw and Vince the most convincing.

The standard dropped a tad after a number of the simulations and a few of the old habits returned EG dropped marks and mis directed hanballs under pressure.

I did witness the Tommy Mac incident. One of the assistant coaches was kicking long high passes into the goal square where Tommy Mac was defending. He seemed to be collected by every player in the area inc his own brother. He remained prostrate for some time with trainers in attendance but once on his feet he was directed to the rehab oval for some running to assist with his recovery. Following a few circuits he returned to the main oval and escorted Hoges to push him for some further running. Did not have any strapping. I think he is fine.

Hoges on the other hand is on on very light duties and did little participation in match simulation.

Some of the bigger guys such as Frost, Max King, Oscar Mac, Gawn and Spencer showed more than I was expecting today.

Won't go into a long spiel .... just some notes and observations from this morning.

- Roos unsighted duties given to Goodwin who has a commanding presence on the ground. Players seem to have great respect for him.
- Brendan McCartney is absolute gold. Constant source of positive energy out on the track, always instilling confidence in the players particularly the newer boys and young recruits.
- I was very impressed with the overall skill level of the group. Having more better quality players on the list has raised the bar in terms of foot and hand skills ... for everyone.
- Max Gawn is looking scary good and could elevate himself into the top echelon of AFL ruckman this season. That trucker beard though!
- Hogan is undoubtedly the franchise player. He knows it, his team mates know it and all of the coaching staff know it. FFS sign him up and lock him away!!
- Jack Viney is the second most important player on this list. Born leader. Next MFC premiership captain.
- Seeing Jack Trengove out running, kicking and boxing was the highlight of my morning. His comeback is on track.
- Expect Clayton Oliver to see senior footy early on this season. Seems to be relishing the opportunity to be on an AFL list. Country lad whose big smile belies a serious competitive streak.
- Forward line mosquito fleet looking a lot more potent this season with Jeffy Garlett, Ben Kennedy and Dean Kent all looking fit and in the mix.
- With Dawes perennially injured Pedo is going to get plenty of chances this season. Looks as fit as I've ever seen him.
- Really feel confident about our defensive set up with all of Dunn, Garland, McDonald and Frost in top nick ... although I think they have Frost earmarked for a forward line role (something I personally don't agree with ... bloke is a born full back!)
- Last but not least ... Jack Grimes is looking physically bigger than I recall him being in previous seasons and attacked every drill with gusto and spirit. I'm not writing him off quite yet!

I never said that he was, or even should be "distraught", and there are huge range of emotions between those two extremes.

I know it's Demonland, but you usually manage to stay clear of the "it's not white, it must be black" crowd.

For better or worse ( probably worse ) that is what I feel about a large number of players who change clubs. I dont enjoy large parts of the sporting landscape any longer. I used to be a member of the Melbourne Tigers until they took away my team. Now i scarcely even look for the results of the NBL. The sporting world we live in is now a big business and a large part of what I loved is gone never to return . I just concentrate on the bits that are left that I have loved since I was a boy.

Was reading Burgos diaries and it seems like it was one of the hardest sessions the players have every done. Also he mentioned that Billy Stretch Jack Grimes and Matt Jones came 1st 2nd and 3rd in the kilometers covered throughout the 3 hour sessions. Thats very impressive by Stretch! We really have lacked the outside gut runner willing to run both ways and spread hard for years.

Good to see Grimes really push himself as well, he definitely is putting himself in contention. I wonder if he would make a good tagger?

And if only Jones could improve on his disposal and decision because we could use his outside run.

Great to hear T Mac was up and about not long after the incident and didn't seem phased by it.  That's good news.  I wish people would wait for the confirmation on the injuries before getting their knickers in a twist.

Did you see anything in terms of an injury with Dawes?

Day 8 Final Session

Max Gawn wins the Paul Roos Man of the Week Award and picks up $100.00 (included in the salary cap one hopes).

This suggests that despite Simon Goodwin's work over the week, Roosy's still the man in charge.

I guess we'll have to wait another time for any injury report but 3 hours and 6 minutes of intensive training is sure to bring some pain.

Sure, he's well paid, sure he can do other things, but we should at least acknowledge how difficult and frustrating it must be for him at the moment.

I agree that there is far more than money involved   Chris loves playing footy but can't  - must be incredibly frustrating

That said, with greater depth he will not be missed as much as a few years back.  Good news for [Pedersen]

Yep - interesting re Grimes.

I wonder if he could take up Daniel Cross's role from last year. He generally reads the play pretty well.

The similarity between Grimes and Cross is a great one. 

Both really strong overhead, good runners, average to poor disposal, defensively very good and will always give 100% effort. 

Grimes is also giving himself every opportunity to improve and have more of an impact this year due to his increased fitness and ability to cover the ground better. 

Its an interesting role to fill

So its fascinating to see them wrestling as if their lives depended on it!  No quarter given!

Of course (along with some others), and I should have put in the usual disclaimer about my bias in that regard.    ?

I've been circumspect about his prospects for 2016 but I reckon he's a chance to nudge his way into the competition's top four ruckmen.

It's great to hear all the positive training reports but I am being ultra conservative in my hope/enthusiasm until the REAL stuff starts. 

I note in one of the training reports that marks are dropped and handballs missing targets when under pressure. This is what concerns me most

It looks like Brent Moloney is involved with day 8 training from the last picture on the official training pictures. Can anyone shed any light on whether it is him & whether was/is involved?

I know exactly what you are saying Demon Ox, but I'm very much reassured by this interview:  Day 9 pre-season camp: Brendan McCartney

In my experience McCartney says it as he sees it (ie. without media spin), and if this interview reflects his normal approach, 2016 promises to be a very enjoyable season.

Cant confirm Bonkers as the pics aren't coming up for me but Beamer last I heard he was living up at Noosa which is down the road from where the boys are.

Correct, and I understand he's coaching a youngsters team, which would most likely be them in the pic. He'd mentioned weeks ago that he was keen to get the kids to one of the sessions to have a look.

Brent Moloney runs the Brent Moloney Football Academy in Noosa for the young blokes in the picture. He has managed to build a relationship with the MFC, hence a lot of the kids getting about in the Melbourne gear.
