The sooner Weideman and perhaps Hulett become mainstays the better.

I'm also looking forward to Oliver, Stretch, Harmes and perhaps White locking down positions.

I see him fighting for that spot with a few different players, like Stretch, Neal-Bullen, Oliver etc.  If he doesn't perform then there are plenty waiting in the wings, which is a good thing.

He's also in the 25% of fans who would opt for Dawes over Pedo. Actually 25% might be too generous.

Limumba has to be better this season simply because it's hard to imagine him being worse. He started off promisingly. I watched a replay of the GC game and he made some important plays that day, both defensively and offensively.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul and doesn't help the ruck situation. Frost has a leap on him and speed around the contest, I think that's why he'll get a good run at that position. If there's no ruck benefit from Frost then I still think we are better off with Dawes or Pedo than Dunn forward and Frost back.

I belong to the select few - Make that just me maybe...that would prefer to have Spencer in the side rather than Pedo or Dawes.

His kicking isnt any good admittedly but he is the mountain that splits em up and he clunks marks in the forward line.

He would make Gawnys work easier thats for sure. And he is hard and mean.

I wouldn't have even considered it until I saw how Dunn went in his brief moves forward last year. Looked 10x better than Dawes and Pedo combined. I'm firmly in the "Frost will be a backman" camp, but it would be a balance with losing Dunn's disposal out of the backline.

must admit I haven't seen Spencil clunk too many marks anywhere he plays.

Dunn's best position for the team is as a key back. He's played a number of rolls for the club over the years, but has been most useful as a key back. He and TMac are our backline pillars. Dunn has considerable experience and leadership - highly valuable to a young defence. IMO that's where he should stay.

Big Maxxy, under the tutelage of McCartney and Stafford woke up to the fact that he had a body and could use it as a weapon. That particular penny hasn't dropped with Spencil yet. Hopefully it will this year because he's a man- mountain. 

Perhaps he should grow a beard Maxxy style.

I'm still not sure anyone is completely ruled out for Rd 1 yet. And so much depends on pre-season form - playing Port away and the Dogs in Craigieburn won't be easy and means that our small forwards will have a tough time before the Saints match, which I'm sure will be like a final rehearsal on March 12. As much as I'd like it to happen, I just can't see CP5 making it back in time. He unfortunately may have to start in the VFL, although he's clearly good enough when fit.

I also think that if Mummy plays, we have to take into account what happened last time in Rd 2. The Russian dominated the first term and gave us first use but then tired and once Mummy got on top, their midfield creamed us. As much as i rate Gawn and I've seen how fit he is, I'd also start the season against Mummy with an insurance polciy and that means playing Spencer. Sorry guys but I think he's one of the best back-ups in the VFl and this is one game where I'd play him - horses for course or gorillas for Mummy policy.

The other key match-up is that Bugg will be tagging either Ward or Shiels so he will play. And Tom Mc always plays on Cameron - so lock that one in as well.

So here's my side - although it will change because injuries and a loss to Port or Dogs will force a change or two.

With capped rotations can we afford a defensive rotation that isn't a midfielder?

Unless you want all defenders to play the entire game, then there will be a one-man rotation through that spot. Against some sides we may only need five genuine defenders (because some side play only five forwards and one as a high midfielder) but you still will require one player swapping with the defenders, just as one forward player will be required to swap. The luxury is that there is now two midfield rotations - last year it is was one and the second was someone who floated in the 6 spot (high half forward) or the spare forward who could ruck (Frost, Pedo, Dawes even T-Mac on occasions last year).

What I am saying is I don't want to risk Mummy hurting someone like Frost. I'd rather he plays as a defender.

I for one would miss the Torps he kicks from full back if he played up forward. I'll take fond memories of the torp he kicked against Ninthmond last year to my grave. It was an absolute ball tearer!

I rate your analysis but, with Spencer in, the team seems a bit too slow and possibily with less run-with ability than I think we need against GWS.

That said, I absolutely get the Mumford factor and can't forget that game last year. Gawn's not Jamar though. I think we need to back him to go head to head with every ruckman in the comp in 2016, and that includes Mumford IMO. He's fit enough to do that now. Can't simply have a back up simply because he may get injured in a game. It's too luxurious and has a cost in other areas.

Yes Ron you very neatly outline the reasons Spencer will struggle to get a gig. Unlike many, I rate Spencer but Gawn is currently the number 1 ruckman and it is very difficult to fit 2 lumberers  in one side. The other possibility is that Spencer consistently shows strong marking ability at Casey in which case he may be considered because he can also provide an option forward.

I would wager Spencer is considerably faster and fitter than Pedo.

The recruitment of Weiderman suggests to me that neither Dawes or Pederson are in the long term planning unless they significantly lift their game, as such i wouldn't be surprised to see Weiderman blooded fairly early on depending on form.
