Was just listening to the podcast on the AFL website. I switched it off after Carlton's 2nd pick but it went...

1. Weitering - Carl

2. Schache - Bris

3. Mills - Syd

4. Parish - Melb

5. Hopper - GWS

6. Kennedy - GWS

7. Francis - Ess

8. Weideman - Ess

9. Oliver - GCS

10. Curnow - Melb

11. Milera - Carl

Curnow and Parish would be an amazing result for us.

Thoughts?

Not sure why we wouldn't throw a bid on Hopper after we bid on Mills. We have nothing to lose really.

Except for the fact we have a deal with GWS to not bid on Hopper = added value to our offer for pick 7 & Bugg.

Hence the AFL's half-hearted threat recently in regards to clubs colluding on academy player bidding.

They'll never prove it.

Not sure of the rules but surely you cant bid one more than 1 player per pick

according to rpfc you can

technically the second pick is now at p4, so it is a different pick

e.g. p3 melb bid an academy player, northen team accepts, gets bid 3. our p3 slips to p4

at p4 we bid for another academy player......etc

I know this was discussed in the media a while ago. I thought the consensus was that you couldn't use your pick to keep bidding on all of the players, but I could well be wrong.

As for the predictions, I would probably have the Bombers taking Francis and Curnow with Weideman falling to us, but aside from that pretty much spot on for mine.

Let's put it this way:

We get the first choice & the fifth choice out of Parish, Francis, Weideman, Oliver & Curnow. In terms of their chances of being a future A-grader (which, let's face it, is why we traded up to picks 3 & 7), there's not a lot to choose between them. We each have our own preferences, but they all show a lot of promise but a few concerns.

In this draft, after these guys (and the first two and the academy picks) the chance of picking up a future star falls off a cliff within a few picks.

So it's a good place to be.

They have us missing Oliver which would be disastrous

Just because his name is similar to Ollie doesn't mean anything,

his body of work over the past two years has not been anything like Ollie Wines, at the start of this year he wasn't even tipped to be drafted... he's come from nowhere.

Some interesting points:

- Essendon has shown Parish no love recently according to Cal Twomey. Reading between the lines, they know he won't be available.

- Francis is a Bombers supporter and seems a pretty good fit according to them. No real go home concerns it would seem.

- Sanderson says that a lot of clubs have Curnow in the 10-20 range, but he is a lot more bullish and thinks he could be anything once he's into an elite environment, loses his puppy fat etc.

I think both Curnow and Weideman will go later than many suspect. Both a little over inflated for mine.

Draft always reminds me of the Melbourne Cup. Got to be pretty good to be there but strange things happen.

Priority is attack on the footy, who wins the contested ball the best out of our options, Hogan and Brayshaw great attack on the footy...Toumpas and Watts no attack on the footy. Does anyone know which of our options attacks the footy the best?

Weideman's medical will be interesting 'BB'...hope the Richmond doctor is in on it.

Seems strange that you cannot keep picking after all you have to take the player if the bidding side does not want to match it, so no one is going to be throwing around picks on players they don't actually want. Only being able to select one academy player would mean that you only have one shot at picking one of the top 4 or 5 academy players but can choose any other available players.

I don't know why they did a needs based draft.

They should've just drafted their best players with some consideration to types that clubs usually prefer. In fact if they had gone head to head with a pick each for the top 20 that would've been better.

Twomey's phantom draft will be interesting. Right now it sounds like he's struggling for info big time.

Sanderson seems to really rate Curnow.

It'll be interesting to see who Essendon take.

To be honest, the thought of taking Weideman at 3 and the best available mid at 7 wouldn't bother me. Perhaps we even go for a Bonner or Milera instead to compliment what is now a pretty 'contested heavy' midfield.

Can't stop thinking about a Weideman/Hogan forward line.

We'll pick up mids down the track. Prestia is still coming home remember.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
