So Terlich and Matt Jones have contracts for next year but Cross can't get one. Who's in charge of list management again? I thought Cross was 50/50 to go on next year, but I assumed he'd make the decision.

Congratulations on a great career Daniel.

Don't expect to see them at the club next year.

Thanks for all the hard work Crossy!

Sad to see Crossy go but glad he could go out playing decent football rather than toiling away in the magoos!

I see we've offered him a role at the footy club so hopefully he sticks around!

I don't like the feeling of this.

I think one last year would have helped.

Bounced back from possibly his worst game for us against Carlton, to top the posession count in another miserable sojourn West. A true professional to the end.
Good luck in future endeavours Crossy!

Thought he'd go on one more year. I wonder if he was politely told to hang the boots up and take up a science role at the club? That was the plan wasn't it?

EDIT. Apparently, he was told...

I think its the right call by the coaching group, give him a finish on the right note rather than playing the best part of next year down at Casey. That said I would not mind him doing a similar thing to what Byrnes is doing down at Casey, if he wanted to.

Creates opportunities for Harmes, ANB, Stretch to push into the starting side next year.

I also think this will lead to news of Howe signing on, but that is just my feelings.

Thanks Crossy, great example and leadership for the younger fellas in a club that desperately needed it.

Hats off.

I agree with others. I think this is good timing. He has been a terrific leader and role model to younger players.

I watched him play his last game for the dogs down at Docklands and will do the same again this weekend.

I think I would have kept him him for next year, but he is definitely slowing down, so maybe the time is right. Time for some of the 19-22 year olds to step up and take his spot.

A fantastic career, and a great 2 years at Melbourne. Exactly what we needed, just a pity there aren't more like Crossy at the club.

Thanks Stannis, well done!

Cross definitely hasn't been holding back any of the young players. On form, Cross will finish in the top 10 of the B&F this year.

If we had 2 or 3 younger players waiting in the wings who could play a similar role, I could understand the decision. The facts are, we don't.

What an absolutely inspirational farewell address to his team mates. He was doing it tough, but still found time to leave some "pearls of wisdom" with the playing group. I hope they embrace them 100%, starting on Sunday which Roosy spoke of.

He was a general utility and played all through the ground, what I think it will mean is Lumumba in the backline and mid/wing opportunities for the younger players.

Absolutely loved having you at the club Crossy, tried your guts out every week, cracking footballer and seemed to be an even better bloke!, All the best for the future, lets only hope it is still involved with the club some how.

He had a couple of great games this year (notably our wins against the Dogs and Pies) but he was exploited by opposition pace far too often. As much as I loved him the last couple of years it's the right call by the club, his time had come. Hopefully whoever fills his spot does it with as much heart and effort as Cross showed throughout his career.

Really quite disappointed that we didn't give him another year. He has been great for our club, and his contribution on the field and off it has been invaluable.

I hope he sticks around in a coaching role, if he wants to.

Big shoes to fill.

Thanks for everything Crossy, it's been a pleasure having you in red & blue!

We signed him after the Dogs let him go.

He got 2 more years out of himself after being on the brink of retirement. Being critical of Roos not offering him another contract is silly. Time to move on.

Friend of the family was Crossy's player sponsor at the Dogs for many many years.

He was shattered when he came to the Dees as he knew that we were getting the ultimate professional footballer who would try his best week in week out.

What I'll remember the most is not the dedication on field but an article about coming back from his fractured leg and how he ate bone broth for about 2 months to strengthen his leg.

That's the commitment I hope has rubbed off on the playing group about what it takes to get the best out of yourself.

Viney did it with his leg this year.

Great pick up for the club, has done everything that was expected and more, hope you stick around Crossy and continue to remind this lot how professionals do things.

The club didn't offer him a contract.

If this is true then this is a shocking indictment on club management.

He has been one of the few "Stellar" performers for this club for two years.

If true I will be emailing the club and asking

Why should I continue to shell out my heard earned when those that earn't respect as a result of playing for the jumper have been let down so dismally!

Not happy!!

Ease up Pickett

The mind of Crossy is now quicker than his body

Time to bow out with style.

Rubbish, his time has come. I feel sorry for the people who work at the club having to put up with supporters emailing them everytime they crack the sads and throw a hissy fit.

any excuse, legitimately some people just dont ever want to be happy.

Club did him a service giving him 2 extra years and he represented the club admirably, do we want to see it tarnished by a year where he could just not be up to it. Finish playing good football and he will be happy with it.

The club has offered him a role inside the coaching administration.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
