Harley Bennell

The odds of a person making a change in their life, even if their facing a life threatening illness, is 9 to 1. It requires a demanding step by step process, which i just don't think Harley Bennell is willing to do at the moment. Don't be surprised if he remains a DH for some time yet. Ever.

Just a small correction Mon.

That being said, performance wise, he is still in GC's top 3 players. If he is facing obstacles in his life, he is then performing under adversity, is that not also a good trait to have? I have been against taking Bennell all along - especially when most were singing his praises, but now I am starting to warm to him. If his asking price is dropping, then we should be persuading him to make the move.

Out till 5am after the Brownlow.. Big deal.

Missing a medical at Richmond... Actually that is a big deal, makes people's nervousness about him a lot more understandable

Normally I would 100% agree. Players should be allowed to do those sorts of things, particularly in the off season. No complaint from me.

However for a bloke who has a bad history and is looking to repair the perception of him I would have thought partying till 5am in the morning and getting on the grog might not be the best choice he could make. If I were him I would have kept a low profile at all costs.

Pretty much the same as missing a job interview. Who the hell would hire you if you did that?

No professional AFL player should be out on the [censored] until 5am. It's risky business, not to mention not conducive to peak conditioning. Ok in the off season, it is probably ok once or twice if you have a good record. But when you're already on thin ice (pun intended), I would think you'd be locking yourself up in a monastery and behaving like a bloody Boy Scout to try and get his second chance

Doesn't seem like he's all that into the idea of being a professional footballer.

Maybe he wants to go home GC owe him nothing and could trade him to the highest bidder so he's doing this so no one wants him well played by his manager and freo , he will slip through to pick 16

Only the true messiah would deny his divinity.....

If Harley's name was Brian would that make the difference :-))

Col didn't want to change. In the end he was a lazy footballer at Melbourne and Freo saw right through him.

At least with Harley he's continued to play constant elite footy despite off-field grievances - just look at his Brownlow votes - so you could say he mixes work with pleasure but still shows up.

Doesn't really WANT to play top level footy, does he? Imagine anyone in their right mind throwing away the possibility of 500K by getting [censored]. And his manager sounds like a bit of a <noun describing one who tosses>.

Hang on didn't the articles state his manager pulled him out of he medical prior to the medical as no contract had been agreed to?

Very different to the insinuation he just didn't rock up and has further issues.

you don't need to have a contract to get a medical. lots of players get multiple medicals in trade/draft time

and for the manager to agree one day then change his mind the next doesn't add up unless he is trying to look for an excuse to cover up another reason

I'm sure it does happen but some fair old speculation without any facts at this stage.

Fact is that he didn't turn up, for whatever reason, for a medical that could have gained him a 500K contract.

Does that look like player upon whom one could rely in a tight game, especially a GF?

An alternative explanation for his behaviour is that he's done a deal with a club, and they've said to him...

"Harley, stink it up a bit so we only have to give GC pick 43 and a box of kleenex! Cheers Mate! Look forward to your coming on board. ;) ;) ;)".

Similar to Darling getting to West Coast...

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
