POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 16

It is very easy to fix.

The holding the ball rules should be that if you take possession you must either kick it or hand pass it to dispose of the ball, none of this 'it was knocked out int he tackle' nonsense. If you have had prior opportunity (i.e a couple of steps/seconds) and you are tackled and it causes a stoppage then it is a free kick.

The only way there should be a ball up is if someone is tackled without any prior opportunity and it ends in a stoppage. how many times these days do you see the ball dropped, thrown, knocked out and nothing, the ump just waits until 10 players are all on top of the ball. Pay the first free and the game moves on, opens up, and the stoppages disappear.

See, that would be umpiring according to the actual Rules, and you can't have that.

The biggest issue in the game right now is that we have an administrative body which has collectively forgotten that it's sole purpose is to facilitate the playing of the game. We have the precious little darlings who can't be criticised or they might just die from shock. we have the AFL commission, in theory independent but in reality each fighting and clawing desperately for their former clubs. We have the MRP promoting the latest agenda. We have the Laws of the Game committee trying to sanitise the game until it is no longer recognisable...

Far too many people who think that it's all about them.

I got a great idea for all the right poster who hate Paul roos game plan, lets sack him re-hire neeld we will still score 60 points, but the other team will kick 25 goals, then they won't have anything to complain about ugly wins.

I think you're still angry.....

Our game plan's improved, we're using the corridor a lot more although we are missing plenty of targets when we do, forcing us to be more conservative as the game goes on.

We've had a few. McCartney, Brayshaw and Garlett (and possibly Goody). Love 'em.

Bring back Salem and Kent and this is our future (maybe even Hunt).

I was at the game today and watched Stretch running to the i/change bench two or three times and he was out on his feet.

I hope we see the kids get plenty of games, but I'm happy to see Michie (Brayshaw)/M Jones (Stretch and ANB) come in here and there, to give the kids a week off.

They look pretty spent.

Absolutely rubbish game but a few positives e.g..plank hands marked a few and although at times we were in limbo (waiting for Brisbane to run over the top of us) we managed to hold them at bay. Either that or their goal kicking was as bad as ours last week.

I agree with this.

I think that our pathetic state at the time meant that we played Trengove and Scully too much in their first year, and neither were as good in subsequent years, except that Scully is now hitting some form, albeit that he's not a million dollar star.

I now worry that too much is being expected of Brayshaw, who, although playing reasonably, looks to me to have lost some spark. Viney is also young and working so hard, and Hogan's back remains a worry.

You wouldn't rest them all at once but Im more concerned about the long term future. I would give each of them one match off before season's end

Coaches votes

Melbourne v Brisbane Lions

10 Hogan (Melb)

7 Howe (Melb)

6 Gawn (Melb)

3 Christensen (BL)

3 Viney (Melb)

1 D. Beams (BL)

Crossy robbed.

What the hell did Beams do to earn a vote? He laboured through the entire game doing two fifths of stuff all.

The idea of doing a pre-season is to build up your endurance to be able to run out games and not fatigue during the year, the more pre-seasons you have, the more prepared your body.

The young ones don't have that base that the older players do.

So, I expect some of the kids to slow down and be more inconsistent in the last 7 weeks.

Doesn't mean I would rest them, but that is what I expect to see.

That's just plain nonsense. Endurance is related to cardiovascular fitness. It doesn't build up from one year to the next in a cumulative fashion related to how many preseasons you get under your belt. It's related to how much aerobic exercise you do in the past few weeks. If you keep doing aerobic exercise you keep fit. If you stop or curtail the exercise you become less fit as your body is less able to move the oxygen around as effectively and your muscles are less able to use it as efficiently. Edited by Kali

Agreed, I would've thought that Cross deserved a few. If I were looking for Brisbane players to give votes to I'd have had Taylor ahead of Beams. I suppose we're just more knowledgable than Roos and Leppitsch...

I rated Taylor's 32 possessions as close to the worst 32 possession game I've ever seen. That bloke doesn't kick more than 20 meters, just does rubbish dinky kicks and his disposal efficiency was putrid!

An uglier win was v Collingwood in Sep 1964. Scrappy play, no forward line and a fluke snap getting us over the line.

Ah yes. What a horrible game that was.

Don't forget that TGNWS was furious with #5 for going so far forward, but did forgive him when the siren sounded :-)))

The 'fatigue ' shown especially by young players late in the season is probably partly mental burn out and also a result of unaccustomed battering and bruising than pure lack of endurance then. Edited by monoccular

Bit surprised looking at the coaches votes that Viney only got the 3. Nullified Rockliff and played a very fine game of his own.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
