Blicavs would be great but there's no way Cats will want to lose him.

Who cares? We didn't want to lose Rivers (or Clark at the time, although now I'm not so sure!)

They tried to take Frawley as well.

Lets go hard.

Dangerfeild is the big target.

Wouldnt be surprised if PR has that deal done already.

Blicavs would be great to have, but people thinking that Geelong is out of salary cap space need to remember who has recently/is about to leave their team. They currently have 9 players over 30 and they are all part of Geelong's best 22.

Geelong may very well decide to do a deal with Dangerfield similar to Sydney's offer to Franklin, providing a star player to help keep the team dangerous through a rebuild.

Of course, in Sydney's case, the NSW academy program is feeding them such extraordinary free talent that there's no real danger of a decline. Which in turn suggests Sydney might itself have salary cap issues in the near future. Definitely a place to go shopping for a young, top-rated midfielder.

A side note on Sydney - so far they've only had 25 players take the field for them this season, and I don't think you could call any one of them a real 'fringe' player. Kids get games when they show enough to warrant it. It's just another reminder of why I think it is so important that we 'fill out' our best 22 with a complete, AFL-competent group rather than go too hard for one or two 'stars'.

Another way to look at it; without Newton, Cross and Lumumba, who would we be seeing running around our midfield? Would we have played Billy Stretch from round 1 and crushed him?

And finally, for the supercoaches out there - Melbourne have 8 players with a supercoach average score under 60. Swans have 2; Dean Towers (59% time on ground) and Adam Goodes (50%).

FILL THE 22.

Good point Goffy. I think the Roos player recruitment policy centres on bringing in undervalued players which we will see again at the end of this season. We need to bring in more role players and then try and develop some stars in Hogan, Salem, Brayshaw and Petracca.

I'm of the thought that we will only be able to compete in the finals once guys like Newton are only depth players.

I see Petracca is still a keen pie supporter..

FILL THE 22.

When was the last time a team won a premiership without any genuine stars? I can tell you now, we won't be getting anywhere near it while Newton, Cross, and Lumumba are running through the midfield, so I respectfully disagree and say we need at least 2 gun peak-age midfielders added to our list before we even bother talking finals.

Why would Stretch be playing from round 1 if we didn't have those guys? We would have other players in their place, not just 3 less players.

We don't need to "fill the 22", we have the same number of players as anyone else, we need to "improve the 22".

Players who are perhaps underappreciated and gettable under our current circumstances:

Mitch Wallis - Inside midfielder who was in and out of the team last year. Had a great start to 2015 until injury sidelined him. May struggle for a midfield spot when Libba returns.

Ben Lennon: Getting good numbers in the VFL but can't crack the Richmond midfield. Has good inside skills and reasonable disposal.

Daniel Gorringe - was keen to leave Gold Coast last year. Still very young by ruckman standards (22) but am not sure whether he's a first ruck or a ruck/forward.

Matthew Leuenberger - have believed we should go after him as a free agent. Body is holding together so far for 2015 but he can't get a run at the first ruck position due to the dominance of Stef Martin.

I would possibly look at getting both Gorringe and Leunberger.

Leunberger is a pure ruck and should play 70-80% of the game there, while Gorringe can be more of a ruck/forward. I would love for Frost to not have to play any ruck role so we can use him purely as a shutdown back who can run off his man. This would then allow Dunn to take the 3rd tall who he will destroy most of the time.

Painfully ironic that Leuie is struggling to become 1st ruck at Bris due to dominance of Stef Martin

Yeah but Stef was just never going to perform for us.

I think he was one of those players who needed a big wake up call. Getting traded was that call.

Completely wrong, like Blitzer at Geelong, didn't play much footy as a junior, we cocked up his development, went to Brisbane and through circumstances became the No1 ruck and has benefited from the constant game time

Fair enough, but even Brisbane didn't think he'd be as good as he is right now. I think his attitude was re-adjusted as a result of being booted out.

Agreed was going to be the back up for Leuie, but reverse seems to have happened, don't know why some on here want us to get Leuie, he is the new Robbie Warnock

No he's not 'TDI', when fit and playing as first ruck he's a far superior player. I remember him taking us apart a few years back, the kid can play. One of the questions is, can he stay on the park?

I wouldn't mind seeing us go for Casboult.

Think he would compliment Hogan well

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
