H my comment was in no way a comment or reflection on Grimes. It was merely a reflection on our greater depth this year and the fact that many Melbourne players will be spending their time at Casey trying to break into the top 22. As a consequence, and with the improved coaching structure at Casey (on the MFC payroll), I can see a rosy year ahead for Casey and a strong tilt at the VFL Premiership. For the first time Melbourne players will get something back from their time at Casey and that will be playing in a winning team with their MFC teammates.

The Grimes bashing bother me a bit. Yep, his disposal last year was poor and he has some cringe moments in the NAB cup, but he had to lead the club through the Neeld years. Let's not forget before he was made captain he had be injured consistently. I get it, at the moment it looks like we have better options, but no need to kick the guy while he's down. Let's see him rip it apart at Casey and press for a spot. I won't forget the spoil he made on Dangerfield last year in Adelaide. I reckon he can play, just needs to regain his mojo. Keep him at Casey until someone's form in the Senior's falls and bring him back.

Seconded despicable, saved me going into detail which I find boring, training is training, although some like to hear that the players are improving their skills and then don't believe it, no sorry that's only when I put it

Although I can tell who is in form and who isn't, we are now into the season, so the individual programs for the players will come into play even more, Watts, Howe and Viney had extra light days today, Tommy Mc only does a certain amount and others are in and out of the drills, including Hogan for a massage mid session

As part of the agreement with the QB'day game it guarantees an extra game at the G for the Pies which potentially means one week less of travelling interstate.

Eddie did it because he was a great deal for Collingwood, not because he was trying to give the MFC a break.

OD I like your posts generally but I thnik you are well out of line with this and I take umbrage at the suggestion we are only there due to the favour of Collingwood.

1. The fixture is not equal. The Pies get favoured. As do the bigger clubs. This results in more revenue for them and less for us.

2. TV coverage is not equal. If you were to sponsor a footy club then the Pies get consertaively 3x more coverage than us. This is simply not fair.

3. There are 18 teams in the comp. The Pies can play themselves if they want to but as it stands all 18 teams are part of the package and deserve equal rights. Coll 1sts v Coll 2nds wouldn't get much coverage or advertising. They need us,

4. In the last 60 years we have won twice as many flags as them

5. 'Equalisation' is really only part equalisation for points 1,2,and 3 above. We get shafted. Any squealing about Eddie suporting the weaker clubs is just that - squealing. When we play the bigger teams at the MCG we get big crowds and decent gate receipts. If we got decent TV coverage we would get decent sponsorship revenue.

6. We only Collingwood once a year generally (altho this year it is twice). even the fixture by getting rid of the NAB cup (BTW Who won the NAB cup this year? NFI because it is irrelevent)

7. Eddie is a [censored] from Broady that now lives in Toorak. He is the last person to lecture on what is best for the competition. His team has won 1 flag since he has been at the helm. he doesn't deserve all of the good things that the AFL delivers to the Pies

Just as two businesses can provide similar products/services with wildly different revenue outcomes, so too can football teams.

You mentioned unequal television coverage, driving inequality in sponsorship revenue. While this may be true, and while it may also influence the supporter base of the club to a degree, the difference in revenue does not stem solely from sponsorship.

According to the 2014 annual reports of both clubs, major revenue items are as follows:

Collingwood

AFL distributions: $8.2 M

Commercial Activities: $19.3 M

Function centres and gaming venues: $23.0 M

Membership and match day: $24.4 M

TOTAL: $76.8 M

Melbourne

AFL distributions: $11.0 M

Commercial Activities: $7.7 M

Function centres and gaming venues: $11.7 M

Membership and match day: $10.3 M

TOTAL: $42.1 M

Our commercial activities (which include sponsorship and merch) are $11.6 M less than Collingwood. This is undoubtedly supported by the excellent TV coverage they get etc. However, our membership and matchday revenue is $14.1 M less than their's while functions and gaming is $11.3 M less. That's a total of $25.4 M just in those two items, which can only really be put down to good management/investment by their club and the passionate financial backing of their supporters.

Re-read the comment. Did I say I hope someone's form drops? No, I said wait until it does. I would have thought in the modern game it is inevitable that player's form will fluctuate throughout the season. Not sure why you need to go for personal attacks. Rubbish. North and Port both top 4 last year. Compare their draws to Richmond, Coll and especially Carlton.

I get that we are in for our fair share of dodgy time slots, foxtel coverage etc. But I'd watch Port and North any day of the week over Carlton. Round 1 - Carlton first game of the season. Round 2 - Carlton first Friday night of the season.

Getting Carlton back to 40k crowds and 50k members seems more important than getting Port some ripping free to air coverage so they can sell sponsorships for mega bucks and getting North a fair run so they can build their crowds above 30k and members above 40k.

If you don't reward top 4 then I don't see how clubs will ever get rewards that they need to then funnel more investments in to performance. Hawthorn did it. Geelong did it in a less competitive era really. But it's getting harder and harder and there's no sign of reward unless you strike gold like the Hawks did in several areas (Coach, Tassie deal, multiple successes).
