Colin Garland potential forward

Who else thinks it would be good to see Colin Garland given an opportunity up forward, I have been a massive critic of Garland and I think his time down back should be done?

With Hoges, Dawes, Jamar/Gawn, Watts, Pedo and a bunch of young recruits...... why?

No for a number of reasons:

1. He still is a versatile defender which is handy as he can play tall or small as well as defensive or more attacking

2. He was near elite in his position in 2013

3. Medium sized forwards are pretty useless when you have 2 big forwards and a 2nd ruck, I'd rather use the spot on guys with midfield ability

4. He's really not been tested as a forward much at all

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt from last year and see if he's back near his 2013 form.

I think he has showed potential up forward when given the opportunity and with our history of injuries I wouldn't be surprised if at one time Hogan, Dawes and another forward are out of the team.

He could do a Frawley type role, and he would draw a tall defender.

I remember he showed some talent forward in 2012 (particularly the Essendon game). But I much prefer him as a defender. Sort of a "break glass in case of emergency" forward player.

Ahh the days of 2012 when we had Jared Rivers at full forward and Colin Garland at centre half forward.

Maybe he can play in the fwd line in round 1 with the absence of Dawes?

In rd 21, he did play in the fwd line V's GWS in the last qtr out of deperation, and actually snagged a goal.

I don't mind the idea of Pedersen as a defender and Garland as a forward.

Garland's ability to play on small, agile and quick opposition forwards as well as your more one-dimensional straight-line leading forward is an extremely valuable quality.

Pederson doesn't have that positional flexibility due to his physical attributes and not only that, he just had his best year of AFL football playing as a forward.

Why you'd entertain the thought of swapping the two I'm not sure.

It's most certainly something Neeld would do.

Garland's challenge is to get back to playing as a consistent and versatile defender like he was in '13.

I think he will do stints in the midfield this year. Roos rotated him through the centre on one or two occasions last season but that was off no pre-season. I have a feeling he will go through a bit for frequently when his fitness is right up.

Im curious... When does his current contract end? Why did e step away from the leadership group?

I put it here rather than in the training thread, I spoke to him on Friday about this, he is following Jack Grimes' lead, he has been plagued with foot and ankle injuries, he knows there is serious competition for spots, he just wants to be selfish and get back to where he was a couple of years ago without any distractions, said Jack is better at handling the leadership group activities as well as his own form. So that is his answer

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
