It's not often I am affected by the death of someone I don't know, but this one hit me and I have to admit, a tear was shed.

I agree with BB on Sean Abbott. The pain he'll be going through will be immense and I expect long lasting. I hope he gets the support that he will need.

Devastating news. So sad for everyone involved. A talented young man with the world at his feet. Life should definitely not be taken for granted. RIP Phil.

I was about post something similar. Didn't know the bloke but when I learnt he had gone, it felt like it was someone I was close to.

Strange really, how elite sports people can give you so much joy but also provide you with a level of perspective about life when they're struck by tragedy.

Incredibly sad.

RIP

An incredibly sad day, just cant imagine the pain that his family, friends & players are going through. I also cant comprehend the pain Sean Abbott is going through. He will, however he shouldnt blame himself for what he has been taught from a young age. A freek accident that on this occasion had life threatening consequences. Phil was taken too soon but passed away doing what he loved. RIP Phil Hughes.

Rest In Peace Phil Hughes.

An excellent cricketer and athlete who had the whole world in front of him and an exceptional young man taken far far too soon.

As much as I offer my condolences to the Hughes family I also offer and call for the upmost support for Sean Abbot. I could not imagine how this for kid must be feeling. I only hope he is not forgotten in this tragedy as well.

A truly terrible day.

Goodbye hughesy, thanks for the memories

Really feel for young Abbott. This will be a tough one for him to overcome and I wish him all the best.

Tragic day.

Likewise, I feel for young Abbott. It was a shocking mishap and we all feel for the Hughes family and the cricketing world in general.

Mitch Johnson should take heed. His body line bowling could lead to another tragedy if he persists with it.

I spent my day at a funeral and heard the news of Phil Hughes' passing at the wake. The wake had an almost celebratory feel with the focus a 90 year old who had lived a full and interesting life and was much loved by a very very large family. Passing away at just 26 just isn't right. I just hope some good comes from this. Amateur cricketers like me who took far too many risks playing without a helmet might get the wake up call we need. RIP Phil.

This really was a freak accicdent, he was wearing a helmet, he took his eye off the ball for a split second and it followed him into the worst possible place. This is so sad and wrong it's hard to comprehend. He had a bright future in the sport, was well liked by so many, and of course was just shy of 26.

Hearing the updates yesterday I had a lump in my throat, I knew that in this case no news was not good news. I could feel it coming but like Troy and Jimmy I didn't want to accept it.

RIP Phillip Hughes

Very, very sad, been hoping and praying for a better outcome. Rest in peace Phil.

I'm sure Cricket Australia would have preferred not to have knocked the AFL off the front page on draft night.

A horrible horrible freak accident

I feel really concerned for Sean Abbott - just unbelievable yet I guess at some stage inevitable bad luck for all concerned. I hope he gets a lot of support from Cricket Oz.

Were I a believer I would pray

I haven't taken much interest in cricket in recent years however wish to send my condolences to Phil's family and also Sean Abbotts.

I've seen some horrible things that I would never repeat to family or friends however seeing Phil stagger after being struck will stay with me for a long time. By all accounts was a well respected young man.

RIP Phil.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
