I know this should be in the other sport thread but many don't read outside the football forum.

Phillip Hughes has passed away this afternoon.

Very sad. RIP

I'm a huge cricket fan and am heartbroken by this news. Even if you're not a cricket fan, this is one of the most tragic stories in Australian sporting history.

A young, fit and healthy man taken from us way too soon.

I can't begin to think how his family, teammates and opponents would be feeling, particularly those that were at the ground.

RIP Phil.

Absolutely crazy this has happened. One of the most horrible things to ever occur in sport.
RIP Phil and condolences to his loved ones.

RIP

Personally I didn't really rate him as a test cricketer. But it's irrelevant. If he was 35 year old who played 1 random ODI or a 19 year old next Ponting.

It's terrible for cricket. It's tragic for Abbott and everyone at the game really. And it's just really sad for his friends and family.

Hopefully everyone is well supported.

I'm pretty good at switching off things and I'm actually glad the draft is on to provide a new focus. I don't know how I'll watch the first test next week though.

We were yet to see the best from this young man. Only 25 and on the verge of making it.

I know of no greater sporting tragedy.

Thoughts to his family, team mates and Sean Abbott.

Life really sucks some times.

I feel quite numb.

havent been following this story, how did he die? I know the ball hit him in the head or neck, did it fracture his skull or something? Even if it did that surely wouldn't kill someone on its own

RIP Phil Hughes

Phil was struck in the neck by a bouncer. The ball struck an artery on his spine leading to his brain. The artery split & caused major bleeding into the brain. Unfortunately they were not able to bring him back to consciousness & he passed away this afternoon 48 hours after the initial injury.

This is tragic & terribly sad news for his family, friends & cricket australia family. A good & very talented young man gone far too soon.

When a courageous man like Phil Hughes leaves us so young it feels like things will never be the same again. I hope there is a completely new look at helmets so that this kind of tragedy is never witnessed or experienced again. R.I.P.

RIP Phil Hughes and thoughts and sympathies with his family and friends. His death has touched so many.

It's a shocking thing as is the lost life of any young person.

I really feel for Shaun Abbott. I can't imagine what he's going through.

Horrible horrible news. In a sport that is not generally associated with life threatening situations or hard contact, this comes as an even greater shock. Listening to people like Jim Maxwell on the radio this afternoon (he broke the news to ABC 702), you couldn't help but be swept up by the emotion; Maxwell was sobbing as he made the anouncement, Richard Golver who is usually a very upbeat presenter of the afternoon show was also choking on his words... this has obviously hit home to many many people.

I really hope and pray that Shaun Abbott gets the support he needs now; I cannot even begin to imagine the pain and the hell he must be going through right now.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
