Id rather Peter Wright then McCartin.

203cm tall with a big engine who can take some serious pack mark and split them.

He can also play ruck which is something needed these days to be an AFL player and that's versatility.

McCartin is a one trick pony who can play one position and that's it...... At least Hogan can push up field and even become another midfield option.

shame isaac Heeney goes to sydney for pick 18 or whatever it is.

absolutely ridiculous.

Ranked in the top four, but swans, on top half of the ladder for the better part of a decade - can take him at the end of the first round - just because.

frustrating.

With Roosey bidding pick two, that puts him as the second best talent in the draft i would suggest! Pity Melbourne isn't in a position to start up an academy like this (didn't someone suggest NT as a location to set up an academy)?

Kicking accuracy is Wright's main strength according to the player reviews [as is his ability to gather below his knees]. It seems that Wright and McCartin both bring different (potential) strengths and it will be a strategic decision of Roos what best meets his strategy. Whichever way we go, we are liely to emerge with a much stringer midfield and forwardline than we boasted this year.

I read that he has a confidence problem with his set shots, so he tends to shank it a bit. It was in a write up on Knightmare's 2014 Phantom Draft: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/knightmares-2014-phantom-draft.1060197/

Set shot goalkicking – McCartin’s conversion from set shots is below average. He is prone to shanking his set shot attempts and can lose confidence in his set shot goalkicking. It seems to be a really mental thing for him but something given his excellent field kicking I feel can improve to a strong standard. McCartin’s tendency when he starts to lose confidence in his set shot goalkicking is he often will either elect to find a target in better position or will play on or attempt a snap shot at goal, and while I have no issue with this tendency my hope would be that he can get his set shot goalkicking up to a standard where he does not experience that same waver in confidence he seems to experience at the present time and has experienced in years past.

I didn't hear about it, but its a great idea.

aim the academy at providing the boys and girls in darwin, catherine and remote communities the opportunity to play and get drafted.

I'd say Jones (who is A grade), Tyson and Vince (both top shelf but not quite A grade).

I'd say A grade, and I'd say Jones is A+, if you rack up 500+ disposals that year you were A grade.

We should be drafting on ability, not needs. If he is, indeed, the second best player in the pool (as many seem to rate him), draft him and Brayshaw at 2 & 3.

What does that mean? The second best player at this point in time? Or someone who has greater upside over, say, 5-7yrs?

Probably should just close this thread. We wont be taking him!

That looks like them marketing him for memberships?!? I'm wrapt if the saints take him pick 1, welcome to the MFC club Petracca & Brayshaw (much as I like Lever I can recognise with his injury he may be more of a risk to take top 3).

Isn't Lever a tall?

Why is he part of the equation if Roos doesn't want to draft top end talls?

I hear people say he could be the next Bontimpelli but he could also be the next Cale Morton (who also carved it up in his highlights package).

Carved it up ? meaning a lot of sheep dogging and possessions under no real pressure.

Just posted on the Saints Twitter:

Not sure if these are fresh highlights or not.

The advantage of them taking McCartin is that he will have a couple of year to play next to Riewoldt and soak all that knowledge in

Would it be that or as they have openly said there are 4 possibilities to go number 1, McCartin, Petracca, Brayshaw & Wright. 4 weeks to the Draft upload a profile for 1 of the potential draftees each week in the lead up.

Even if we believe despite what theysay about 4 potentials we know it is a race in 2 for the Saints

They did a similar clip for Petracca.

Have quite a few Saints mates and they have no idea who they are taking. Doesn't matter, either way McCartin won't be a Dee!

Why? Opinion or do you know something?

My god, you make so many blanket statements without any substance behind them. Like most, I appreciate opinions, as long as there is some sort of reason behind it.

If it's knowledge from a source, say so. If it's a personal opinion, tell us why.

It really adds nothing saying "McCartin won't be a Dee".

If Petracca is off the board, I honestly don't see why we wouldn't take McCartin/2MP to go with Brayshaw. There's no other midfielders that really stand out (again, Lever is not a midfielder) and it's not like we have a 'powerhouse' forward line.

I have been told the complete opposite. The MFC will not let macartin go past pick 3 if he is still there

Yep, people seem to be forgetting how [censored] our forward line is...

Compared to our midfield - our forward line is the '86 Lakers...

At least we have a couple of players close to A grade in our midfield, we have nothing even approaching that in the forward half.

The only question i have, if this is the case, is why would we be after McCartin instead of Wright? McCartin offers something similar to Hogan, whereas Wright can also be effective in the ruck.

Because he is a better player.

And was it McCartin who has a question mark over his set shot accuracy, while Wright has a much better conversion rate? (I'm sure I read something to that effect somewhere).

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
