A hesitant maybe. Only if we struggle to find a replacement for Chip (probably Frost or Georgiou).

I'd rather not. He's kind of a poor man's Gibson to my mind. Not the best defender, but a decent rebounder.

You're saying we couldn't use "a decent rebounder"???

I think Gwilt and Harry-O are similar type players. Big engines, plenty of run out of the backline. Not enough room for both, but enough room for one. I think I like Gwilt's price tag more given it will probably be a 2 year contract and probably a a good 100k a year less than Lumumba.

Gwilt might get a 3 year deal at GWS, and rumors swirling about a Clark/Harry-O swap suggest Roos is into him.

We could get Gwilt for nothing either by him being delisted (as we did Daniel Cross) or he can go into the rookie draft and we take him with our first pick. Could be a better result than giving up a pick or player in a trade for HL.

Malceski has been talked about going to GC17 if he doesn't stay at the Swans.

Gwilt is a neither here nor there recruiting option for mine - same as HL, his recruitment won't solve our midfield woes and we already have a plethora of mid-sized defenders who can't kick.

Posted

Does this mean Malceski is off our radar?

Apparently Sydney have re-upped their offer, and Gold Coast also offered very good terms. GC on the hunt for a mature rebounding defender, they're reported as being into Courtney Dempsey as well.

Strange yet not totally unexpected views held on Gwilt.

Gwilt CAN play. Hee is a case of taking advantage of a suckers folly. God knows what the Sainters are up to but they are cutting off noses for sure. Gwilt is NO star. Hes a very good pedestrian sort of decent player. Meat and 3 veg, nothing tantalisingly special but a decent player I think.

Hes going not because he cant play but because the Saints are on a massive rebuild and going down the fountain of youth path ( right before going down the gurglar imho )

Am not surprises Roos would talk to him ...I would.

There will be quite a different team take the field as Melbourne next year...it has to be.

Gwilt was actually one of the layers to NOT go missing in the finals of recent times for St Kilda.

We need some maturity and steadiness about the team. Why not BOTH Harry and Gwilt ? Ball would rebound at light speed.

Id consider him , for sure.

Lol these posters who say next or pass over each name as they come up. We are the laughing stock of the AFL with a terrible rebounding defence full of turn over merchants. Not saying I want Gwilt necessarily, don't know enough about him, but I fully back Roos and team to look at every possibility. If they go for Gwilt, there must be something in him that'll improve our list going forward.

Unless they are a complete spud, which Gwilt clearly isn't, I refuse to write them off simply because Roos has a history of taking recycled players and turning them into guys who play their role and have a very positive impact on the side. If Roos thinks Gwilt can improve our list then I don't have any complaints.

I don't think he'll improve our side per se - he's a plug n play player, clearly better than Terlich, and might allow Howe to return forward.

Personally I like Howe in the backline.

No doubt Gwilt would be best 21, and a player able to contribute for us immediately. But a backline with Gwilt, Grimes, McDonald, Garland in it does not fill me with confidence that it won't rebound and then ping straight back in again, such is their inability to hit targets.

Imho Gwilt has Roos written all over him

Roos is building a list anot just a 22. Gwilt would be cheap and give us some depth. More importantly it builds pressure for places in the team which has to be good.

The stark reality is the current list cant take the next step so it needs to change.

I think folks have lost a little perspective as to how our progress will occur. It wont be one giant leap into a finals team , it will be a path via decent recycleds mixed with better drafting

i.e Not from A .....to D

but A >. B > C > D its a process not an instant cure

Plus I love the fact we are right on the front foot with these guys - as soon as they are available Roos is talking to them and putting forward our case. It's great to see.

Please, no, delisted from the wooden spooners. Will not improve us in any way.

Only because they are going with the youth movement. Would still be on their list otherwise.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
