When a team with 15 AFL listed players gets beaten by a stand alone side composed of many local players and few with any meaningful experience at AFL clubs to speak of, then you know something's wrong. Expect a large number of the AFL listed players to be clearing out their lockers very soon. It also says a lot about the club's lack of depth.

I can be nearly positive the fact that we have a poor list, as evidenced by Casey's poor year, will not factor in the reasons for denying us a PP.

Oh go on go for it Redleg !

It is late August it is rapidly approaching the best time of the Football year for dees supporters

THE LOSEST EBB by KC from Casey

The Casey Scorpions ended their most disappointing season in recent years with a 17-point home ground loss to Coburg on Sunday.

The Scorpions, who have been VFL finalists in every season since the inception of the alignment with the Melbourne Football Club but the loss at the hands of stand-alone Coburg left them 15th on the ladder, ahead only of Bendigo which has disbanded now that the season has come to an end. To that extent, the club has reached its lowest ebb.

The opening of the game was scrappy and not conducive to scoring. Indeed, it was not until the opening quarter had passed its halfway mark that the Scorpions scored the first goal of the match through Jake Best. However, the momentum shifted late in the term with Coburg booting three goals in time on (including one on the siren) to take a two goal lead into the first break.

The Lions looked to be in control early in the term but a change came over the game with another momentum shift brought about by some strong play from midfielders Aidan Riley who was a prolific ball winner and Demon rookie James Harmes. The Scorpions played inspired football kicking five goals on end including two to second gamer 194cm Joe Fisscher from Old Haileybury who finished with three on the day and, when skipper Evan Panozza drifted forward for a goal, Casey suddenly held a 13 point lead.

However, Coburg managed to regroup with two goals in the moments before the main break including another goal on the siren which leveled the scores.

The third quarter was an arm-wrestle with neither side being able to assert itself. When the siren sounded at three quarter time, the Scorpions had their noses in front by two points. That scenario continued for the first ten minutes of the final term until the visitors broke through with three consecutive goals to hold a 17-point lead late in the term. Fisscher's third goal provided a faint glimmer of hope before a Coburg reply put the result beyond doubt.

In the aftermath of the game comes the news that Melbourne and Casey are having talks this week over the future of senior coach Rohan Welsh whose two-year contract has expired.

Welsh has had a frustrating year with injury woes affecting the make up of his VFL list and also limiting the availability of AFL listed rucks and key position players. The silver lining is that a number of young locals in Ed Morris, Bryce Rutherford, Angus Scott, Jake Thomas and Fisscher have been given the opportunity to show their wares at senior level.

However, the fact that the Scorpions plummeted from finalists to the lowest placed of the ongoing VFL teams in 2015 suggests that there is a lot of work to do in its preparation for the future.

This came in late but worth reading ~ VFL Player Review Round 20.

I can't fathom how Dom Barry made it as an emergency for last night's game on the back of that, although it's probably a sign that most of those left with AFL experience who didn't make it ahead of Barry, have half a foot out of the door.

Wow that is a caning. I mean how farked are we if players at Casey can't be arsed to put in.

We really need to rethink this relationship. I mean even the dogs have their own stand alone team now.....

Yep, the Casey experiment has proven to be an abject failure in every respect. TIme to cut our losses and move on. And why we reward average footballers such as Dom Barry with 2 year contracts mid season is beyond me. By all means sign up your better players as soon as possible, but your fringe players should never be given the opportunity to become complacent and lazy.

Why is everything we do now suddenly an "experiment"? The Casey alignment is not an experiment, it's a bona fide business agreement that has been in place for a number of years now.

Anyway, I didn't hear too many people bemoaning the "abject failure" of the alignment when Casey were regularly finishing top 4. I realise it doesn't look good now as their team is struggling on and off the field and they're struggling to attract good quality VFL players, but I wish we wouldn't carry on as if this is always how it's been.

Exactly.

A big part of the problem with the Casey allignment has been that Melbourne have been terrible the whole time. If Melbourne start playing well then that will help grow the club in the area massively.

For the posters who had a shot at me for questioning JKH's body language (in his last game before being dropped) perhaps you might also consider having a shot at Brad Miller. This from the VFL player review from the last scorps game:

'We’re trying to encourage Jay to maintain a high level of positivity in his body language throughout the game, as it’s an area that can sometimes bring him unstuck'

Disagree.

MFC and Casey relationships hasn't been easy with Casey making top 4 and MFC withdrawing players in finals.

Casey coaches have also moved on after short stints and the feeling is this isn't an alignment.

Style of play has also been an issue and trying to get consistency in the player positions.

Wish we had our own reserves but we look to be locked in Casey agreement so issues need to be sorted.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
