That last half of the season in 1998, is still the best period of football for me as a Melbourne supporter, I only started to follow the club start of the 90s, didn't have any interest in the VFL prior to then.  The games against West Coast, Richmond, then finals V Adelaide and St Kilda before North got us really was an extremely exciting period with the Wiz central to this

The goal against the Hawks is one of my favourite Melbourne memories forever as a kid I would practice running down the wing trying to kick torps towards goal.

Same here, was at that game 33 on the back.

Just a thought, but he'd probably have got far more recognition nowadays if we'd traded him to West Coast instead of lowly Freo as it would've handed them both the 2006 AND 2005 premierships and put him back on the big MCG stage in September where he belongs!

His 2000 season was phenomenal, 76 goals for a small forward. One game at Docklands against either Freo or WCE he kicked 7 or 8 goals including one off the ground from about 40 metres out in the pocket

Not to mention his 9 2nd half goals against the Pies after being dragged.

How that mark in the last round didn't win mark of the year is beyond me.  Okay, Winston Abraham took a ripper, but no chance it was better than Farmer's.

I remember at the time there was some BS reasoning that because it was in the last round and the nomination occurred in the first week of finals it couldn't be included for MOTY contention. It sounds ridiculous so I could be misremembering but that is what I've always thought was the reason.

The Wiz was just awesome to watch. From that collingwood game to the hanger he took against richmond and how good was he in the 98 finals series. That was so exciting. His games against the saints and crows were awesome. How good was it to go to the footy back then and watch our forward line of Lyon, Schwarz neitz and Wiz.

I was shattered when he left to go to WA.

I think we all were shattered dees 189227

Most appropriate nickname  "the wiz".........he was magical,,,,,,,,,,,,,an excitment machine.

For the younger supporters think Garlett factor and double it.

Agree but the Wiz had his "off days".

When he was on he was without peer, but when he was off, he was really off, particularly when he was heavily marked or targeted by a tagger.

I always thought that Garry Lyon was a critical factor. When on the field at FF, Gary kept the Wiz focused and settled but also acted as a protector against aggressive defenders. Lyon was constantly in the face of any opponent that targeted the Wiz.

Off the field, he was a lovely bloke who was happy to sign autographs for the kids.

Like Jurrah, he was the reason to go to the game. An excitement machine.

Why'd they have to choose the goal against us after the siren first up?! I was shattered when he left, him winning the game against us with a kick after the siren was just the dagger in the heart! :(

But they definitely got the rest right. He was the wizard at Melbourne but Jeffery Farmer at Freo. His 9 goals in one half springs to mind first for me, but 8 goals in a prelim is phenomenal. There are very few who could say they have done that.

I was at the game but still in the corridors when he took that amazing mark, he was totally robbed of MOTY but he got GOTY for that run against the Hawks. I think back then you got a car for both so they couldn't give him both!

Gaz indeed loved little Wiz. I have lost count how many times Gaz has written an article about His love for the wiz.

Every now and then i still think that if he'd never left Freo and stayed at the Dees no doubt we would have gotten close to winning a flag.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
