GLUTIUS MAXIMUS BEATS CLASS EVERY TIME by George on the Outer

It's an old saying about how ar.. beats class, and the final goal from Marcus Bontempelli to win the game for the Bulldogs was surely just that?

Or was it?

Sadly, while the shot may be a great contender for the Goal of the Year, there simply wasn't too much class to beat in the form of the Melbourne Demons.

All around the ground there are players who are simply fillers, who wouldn't get a role at any other club. But there is little else to choose from, having witnessed a simply miserable effort at Casey yesterday.

It is a real credit to Paul Roos that Melbourne is competitive. It is equally incredible that the side can be 37 points down and can manage to come back and actually take the lead by the final change and again in the final term.

But there isn't any class in the form of a player or two who simply takes the game by the throat and wills the rest of the side across the line. Melbourne certainly had some seriously gutsy and committed efforts from the likes of Mark Jamar, Nathan Jones and Bernie Vince.

A truly sharp contrast for their output and efforts to the insipid running shown by ... yes, the usual culprits. And sadly, they will get another go next week because there is no-one to replace them.

The results will only change when those players can't get a run, because you simply lose out in those critical one-on-one contests when the game is in the balance.

Mark Jamar dominated the ruck contests, and the Demons definitely had a real chance in the last quarter as Minson was tiring heavily, having had to shoulder most of the ruck responsibilities for the Dogs all afternoon. Max Gawn gave good back-up and showed he actually has a strong pair of hands and can mark and kick (unlike Jake Spencer).

However, the Bulldogs had too much class in the mids and kept getting the contested ball out into space. And they were prepared to run, especially in the first half. Despite the fact that Melbourne the first goal of the match, the Western Bulldogs took control and scored seven unanswered goals to lead by 37 points at one stage.

Cue the great comeback ... a lot of hard work and the game was evenly poised at 3/4 time.

With it all on the line, the Demons simply fluffed it because there was no real class ... and not enough real talent.

Neville Jetta put in a simply superb running lunge to spoil, then followed up and goaled after Minson mouthed off at the umpire. It was all there for the taking, but there were some passengers sitting back, enjoying the view.

And they watched as Bontempelli curled an impossible kick from the pocket.

Game over!

Finally, can we have some sensible discussion as the season starts to near its end about where this great game of ours is going?

Michael Malthouse voiced his opinion during the week saying that if he wasn't coaching, he wouldn't watch the game Carlton coach Mick Malthouse says he wouldn't watch footy if not coaching, Marc Murphy faces injury test before Collingwood game

The umpiring or rather the lack of it has turned the game into a continuous rolling maul. Take a look at today's ruck hit out stats - Minson (WB) 34 Jamar (M) 43 Gawn (M) 23 with a couple of extras to Roberts (WB) and Pedersen (M). There were only 27 goals scored and yet we have over 100 hit outs! It's boring to watch!

Call the free kicks when they happen, throw the ball up straight away, stop sheep herding hoping that the ball will come out and you don't have to make a decision. Decisions are what you are paid for.

Make the game flow ... please!

Last time we lost against the Dogs, I was shattered. This loss I felt like we deserved. We never should have been close.

Maybe this will teach them not to play such a shitty first half.

Absolutely furious.

ONCE AGAIN we let a game go to these shirt-holding cheating ****bags.

Chip Frawley's directly at fault for that Bontompelli goal (both, actually) and he can run down to Geelong as far as I care.

How many will the umps let go?

[censored] am I angry.

Not saying the umpires cost us the game but fair dinkum. Does anyone know the rules anymore? Football is a joke.

The last 5 minutes was the worst umpiring i have ever seen. Free kicks to the Bulldogs for the hell of it and we can't buy one for some of the most obvious things a blind man has ever seen.

Dreadful turnovers at different times cost us the game.... 4 easy goals to them.....we must learn from this.

Pathetic effort. Some Melbourne players need to learn to kick straight and hit targets.

We never should have been close.

That's one way of looking at it, but we outscored them comprehensively from the last 10 minutes of the second quarter onwards. I'd say the opposite: we should have won comfortably.

What did Frawley do that was so terrible?

Bit off more than he could chew. I also noticed that as Bontempelli was twisting and turning through a horde of Demons, James Frawley was taking a nice lie down on the ground for some reason.

FFS!

Frawley was actually one of our best. He kept Jones touchless in 3/4 of football and then shut down Stringer once Jones was subbed out. Plus he gave us some run out of the backline.

If you only ever look at mistakes then you're going to have a really unpleasant life.

Absolutely fuming!

Not happy one bit. Selections this week killed us. the ones that came in did absolutely nothing. Im not including Barry in this because first game starting on the sub.

Some players have just stamped their papers today!!

The umps can go and jump off a cliff for all I care!

FKIN NOT HAPPY!

Its easy. We just don't have enough good players. Some have skill but aren't tough enough. Some are tough but have no skill ... Hardly any with both. Hint: Daniel cross is one

Pathetic effort from the team today. We just lost to a depleted bottom 4 team. We are now entrenched in the bottom 4 and are a chance for the spoon if Brisbanes revival continues.

Also Chip Frawley needs to go. Hasn't played great footy for a few years, but at present he isn't best 22 and cost us multiple goals today through dumb decision making and poor skills. Really disappointing to see such a fantastic defender degenerate into a poor utility. Hopefully we can still make out with good compo even though he isn't worth it.

I don't know where to begin - so disappointed. We didn't deserve to win.

There are about half a dozen that are simply not up to AFL standard and at the moment Frawley is one of them.

I'd rather have Blease in the side than Terlich and I'm not a big Blease fan, even Toumpass or Tapscott would be a better option.

Dumb footballers lose matches, we have to many week in week out. Frawley is number 1 on that list just error after error

Perfect example of the failure of the holding the ball rule.
Pay the ones where there is no prior/opportunity (tyson) and yet don't pay the ones where there is prior and they drop the ball (murphy)

Pretty poor performance from Melbourne today!

Frawley was the only one dropping his head and sitting on his haunches after every goal.

He's scarred, and he doesn't want to get better.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
