Match Preview and Team Selection - Round 6

Congrats to Salem. First time in a while that I can remember a first round pick from Melbourne earning his spot. I would like to see Blease in but JKH has shown more defensive pressure then Blease ever has.

I too think he should have been dropped. I feel no animosity of any sort towards Jack, but I just think it is sending the wrong message to the squad when a guy who acts like that on the field is kept in the side. It completely undermines all of Roos' talk about culture if he's willing to negotiate on the non-negotiables to accommodate a talented player. The entire point of his message is that he doesn't care about your draft position or natural talent, only the effort you put in, and by that measure Jack fell well short and should have been dropped.

Doesn't matter what any of us think about it - it was just never going to happen.

Let's not turn this into another Watts bashing thread. We have plenty already.

I am sure he has been told what the required non negotiables are again by Roos.

Roos I am sure would have a better idea than us Demonalnd experts.

Pretty sure roos has some idea of what he is doing! also pretty sure our skills are average at best and we desperately need anyone who can kick and hit a target! pretty easy to work out why Watts is in and Mckenzie is out.....maybe also why Salem is in.

Good on Salem for earning a game, haven't we all changed our tune, even considering keeping him in the VFL to keeping earning it. Simply age didn't matter, form as rewarded,a and thank god the boy can kick. On a side note josh Kelly has done a hammy this week! reckon we've got the trade deal covered now! Two for none this week!

Jamar is big and experienced, exactly like the swans, a good in, maybe a sideways move but we simply don't have a gun young ruck man like the Suns or Saints.

Sneaking suspicion we will go alright this week, can't wait to see us Saturday night. Go dees.

Any word on what his nickname is yet?

A name like Christian Salem deserves an awesome nickname.

...and it'll probably end up being "Sales".

How I'd line them up:

FB: Georgiou Dunn Grimes

HB: Jetta McDonald Terlich

C: Vince Jones Watts

HF: Howe Dawes Bail
FF JKH Frawley Pedersen
Foll: Jamar Cross Tyson

Int: M. Jones Viney Salem
S: Byrnes

I'd try to sneak Pedersen down back at times to play on Derickx as the resting ruck. Otherwise Georgiou on Derickx, Dunn on LRT, McDonald gets the job on Franklin. Grimes may even have to play tall on Goodes at times if Sydney go with the 4 bigs at once.

In the midfield Viney has to increase his midfield time now. Maybe stick Cross on Josh Kennedy at the stoppages. Viney, Tyson, Jones against the likes of Jack, Hannebery and Parker.

From what I've seen of Sydney this year the way to beat them is to make them chase you. If you sit back and don't attack them then they get going and get the game on their terms. I don't like our chances but I hope we have a go.

We're a 4 goal better side with the dropping of Brandon Jack.

He killed us last year with 4 goals.

I was glad to see B Jack out but then I saw Goodes in! I find it strange they dropped Jack after he kicked a really smart goal last week. Maybe didn't do enough otherwise.

Sophies choice, Id have Watts in, McKenzie out, talent wins.

But it exposes our situation to not be able to stand up against what really appeared to be no interest.

Goodes will be rusty as hell

Kinda glad hes come in to be honest

Rusty players have a habit of a good first up game against us before the rust kicks in. But here's hoping. He is 34 after all and the game does seem faster this year.

The said Adam Goodes is the Australian of the year and is said to be as strong as an...

I usually attend Dees matches where I have mates who follow the opposition (no Dees mates unfortunately). Inevitably there will be some average opposition player out of form who lights up against us. Quite annoying and its been going on for years. Remember Abbott (not Tony) kicked 6 in 1988 GF. God its tough loving the Dees.

Reckon Goodesy will quickly find touch and light up the G. I am planning for the worst but I always hope for the best.

Go Dees!

Goodes has never been average, but I know what you mean.

Goodes is a massive in and has torn us to pieces in the past, but he will be as rusty as an old iron gate. But please no-one has ever effectively tagged him so don't waste a player on him this time.

Great to see Salem in. You can't ignore genuine young talent when it shines in a quality game at VFL level.

Not surprised to see Jamar come straight in. Roos' method in the past has been for an older, big bodied ruckman to hold the spot against all challengers.

A bit surprised about Byrnes, even though I am not his biggest critic. It will be interesting to see how he goes with Dawes and Frawley doing the big man work.

A bit surprised about Watts being kept in.

Unfortunately their midfield will kill us.

With Goodes in, I bet the Roos plays Jack Watts on him. I think Roos had Goodes in mind when he decided to play Watts as a midfielder.

I'm in Watts' corner but at the moment he's about as far away from Goodes as it gets.

He needs to step up this week and I have a feeling that he will.

Jamar in and Spencer out. Where is the progress in that. I know Spencer isn't great but jamar just lumbers about getting in everyones way. He is also an old fossil compared to Spencer.

Spencer is hopeless, he hardly ever times his leaps at Centre bounces and when he does he thumps it straight down to the ground!!

Polly Farmer he aint!!

At least with Jamar he can time his leaps and he does position his body much better. The other X Factor with Jamar is his ability to kick a goal. In fact he kicked 5 one round a few years back.

Nup I like this change!

You're kidding, right? Spencil may not be Polly Farmer, but certainly Jamar isn't either. The Russian kicked 5 in one game five years ago. In 133 matches one would hope he'd kick a small bag in at least once. Soon to turn 31, his days of tapping to his feet and barely getting a mark or kick should be coming to an end. Unfortunately, he's got a bit to go on his contract.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi
