Jack Watts signs new 3-year deal

Absolutely rapt with the news, not only for what he will hopefully bring on field, but more so sending a confident and positive message to all that he sees our club moving in the right direction. I just felt that if Jack left us, it would have made things all the more difficult for us to lure some top line talent in the upcoming trade period.

I saw a young Paul Roos on a wing at the MCG when he was 18. I was in awe at how good he was. I've rarely seen a young opposition player I was so impressed by.

You may see similarities in their style, but that's where it ends. Roos was a star by Watts' age.

"Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ’em."

I was happier than I expected to be at this news. I would've hated watching him run around for another club. We've seen him through the tough times, of which there have been plenty. The best years are ahead for Jack.

I haven't read the entire thread, but he said on the news, Roos is going to push him into the midfield, which he was very excited about. Also stated the opportunity is now there for him, and its up to him to make it a success.

Already Roos has put some desire in one of our players. :) Like it a lot.

In my more optimistic, delusional moments I dream of a coach thinking outside the box and having a full and fit list that has grown and improved. We suddenly have a 195 cm mobile Watts playing midfield and rotating forward with a fit, mobile, angry 200 cm mobile forward in Mitch Clarke playing as a big bodied mid to help out our insiders that may include a mature FA plus Cross.

If the mid field is competitive then our back line has a chance and our forward line of Dawes, Clarke, Howe, hogan, etc, suddenly has 60 plus inside 50s to work with.

The missing pieces are a rebounding half back one option is Grimes; a smart, tough back pocket, Jetta? (Oh for another M Whelan). A crumbling forward, Dom Barry? A young Aaron Davey would fill the post of defensive forward and offensive forward but they are a rare bread.

The other missing parts are a team that actually plays as a team, that makes a big difference to everybody's playing ability.

Interesting that his signing was announced the day after the PP decision. Maybe the club didn't want to announce it any earlier to leave a bit of doubt with the commission?

Watts has the talent.196cm, 91.5kg, reads the play well, has good hands and balance and good disposal. General consensus is that under the Neeld/Misson regime he did become more professional in his training and lifestyle. Overhead his Dad telling friends at the St Kilda game at Casey that Jack was playing at 91.5kg this year but that Misson still felt he could build to 95/96kg if required.

Hopefully Roos and Co can entice the best out of him because if does realise his potential then he will become a very good player and one very hard to match up on.

its a bugger when you wake huh. Its a nice thought though :)

For some reason I'd see Jacks (196 cm, 91 kg) midfield evolution in the direction of a player like Pendlebury (191 cm, 91 kg, with a basketball background).

Fingers crossed.

This was my first thought too. If he could be 3/4 as effective as Pendlebury he'd be an excellent contributor to the team.

OK just give me a fit list and a team that plays as a team should. Can I ask that much?

Really interested to see what a good coach can get out of Wattsy, might be a totally different player in 2014, along with a few of our players.

the talent is there, now comes down to how quickly Roos and co can extract it.

i'm really pleased he's signed, we can't lose what little talent we have, and there's no doubt he has talent.

i really hope he can prove me wrong and become the player that we NEED him to be - a star. i have my doubts.

i'm not sure how he'll go as a mid. my biggest complaint against him is that he's lazy; both to work hard enough to be in a position to influence a contest, and also defensively. those one-armed tackles are nothing short of pathetic.

but it's great he's signed.

as gerard whately said mid-year during the season and reiterated on 360 tonight - it's YOU jack, it's YOU.

Getting Roos on board is a game changer, not just for Watts but for the entire club. This is one part of that change and there's many big pieces of the puzzle that will come together over the next few seasons under the watchful eye of P.J. and the wisdom of Roos.

I have faith that Roos will get the job done and we'll see a different attitude and level of commitment from Watts next year (and some others). Without Roos on board I doubt I would ever have believed this to be the case. And I don't think Watts would have had that belief either. We'd be seeing him running around in a different guernsey and some on here, including myself, wouldn't have given two hoots.

Great interview.

As Ox said on several occasions, you can hear the excitement in Watts' voice.

It was good. I still sensed some hesitancy when the leadership group was discussed. I understood his prioritising becoming a better player, but I'd have really liked to hear his desire to join the leadership group. He is one player that needs be a leader now, not a follower.

I love the idea of him locking down a role in the midfield. His elite disposal will be invaluable in improving the efficiency of our forward entries. But he's going to need to put in one hell of a pre-season if he's to be thrown into the thick of it. His output to date won't be cutting it. Time to step it up a few notches.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
