ASADA released a statement shortly after the judgment, saying the authority's new CEO, Ben McDevitt, felt validated and that the agency was "steadfastly ... committed" to unearthing the truth of what occurred at Essendon.

"Today's judgment vindicates Mr McDevitt's strong belief that the Act always contemplated ASADA working with sports to uphold clean competition.

"The only way to stay ahead of sophisticated doping regimes is to partner with sports; not exclude them from the process," the statement said.

"Three months ago ASADA CEO Ben McDevitt put formal allegations of possible anti-doping rule violations to 34 current and former Essendon players. These players still have a case to answer under the World Anti-Doping Code and Australia's National Anti-Doping scheme.

"Our aim has always been to expose what happened at Essendon in 2012 and we steadfastly remain committed to this."

EFC and Hird may appeal but there is a good chance players are over it and will do a deal with ASADA. Especially those no longer at Essendon or about to leave. Receiving clubs will probably accept a player who has a short suspension...Sydney did with Tippett who got preseason and half the playing season.

Players owe Hird/EFC Nothing. Time for them to look after themselves!

Little made sure that he protected what was left of Hird's reputation by insisting in the settlement last year that it expressly said there was no suggestion of drug cheating and the sanctions were expressly only for poor governance. Can't possibly see how the AFL can avoid giving them very serious sanctions otherwise the reputation of the AFL as a sport will be more damaged than anything that is going to happen to Essendon.

This case has set another unrelated but incredibly significant precedent. The Judge referred to the fact the players had entered into binding contracts with the AFL to be investigated and give up their right to avoid self incrimination and that contractual agreement is binding. This is the first time these contracts have ever been commented on in the Courts. The significance of this is that the court is saying the Clubs and Players contractual obligations with the League are binding. These contracts include the salary cap and the draft. In the past there have been rumours of threats by Eddie No Where that if he didn't get what he wanted he would get the salary cap etc set aside for being anti competitive but the Court is saying if you sign a contract to be part of the AFL it is binding. People have often wondered what would happen if a player or Club took it to court. Well here is the answer.
