I don't need reminding of Neitz. The game is littered with key forwards that started as key backs.

Tom McDonald has played as a key forward at AFL level. It's where he started. I just don't see the class, or skill for him to dominate there and much prefer him back.

Please show me any regular season AFL game where he started as a key forward? Or even spent more than 5 minutes up forward. I think he's done both preseasons before this one as a forward but come the games be it at Casey or for Melbourne he's been down back.

I'm happy for him to be down back but I agree we should always keep our options open. Let's see if he can start to judge the ball and use his body to get more marks. If your CHB is taking marks its often a sign that they could make it more as a forward.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall Neitz started up forward, didn't achieve much and was moved into the backline... he was then moved forward again out of necessity when we were lacking a strong forward line-up.

Neita DID begin as a forward, Because of the OX, Lyon, etc he went down back, and killed it down there, Later was moved back to the forward line.

We may have to agree to disagree then.

Maybe revisit in a few years.

I stand to be corrected about him playing as a forward at AFL level, but why you'd want to move a valuable 10 year key back to the forward-line when you have Dawes, Hogan, Pedersen and Mitch Clark has me dumbfounded.

i agree it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

It ain't broke, no need to fix, per se.

I don't think Tom played forward BUT he trained predominantly last preseason with the forwards...and then Neeld played him back.

Tom McDonald is more suited to be a damaging player as a defender that quickly turns defence into attack.

He has already showcased this creative ability, and with better kicking skills he will hurt his opponents and have them worrying about his influence.

He can only do this from behind the ball.

Agree with this. We've seen him a few times burn his opponent and find room in dangerous positions around the forward 50. Admittedly, he's often blown those chances, but the poise wo finish his work will come.

Yes.

If doing that walk, I'd allow 15 mins on top of however long it takes you to get to the G.

It's right by Richmond station - a much better option.

I guess one needs to keep all options open, depending on circumstances.

After all, had the Ox not gone down with his knee injuries, and had a 12 year career as the competition's leading CHF (which is where he clearly was heading), then DN may not have moved forward at all.

Thanks Jose.

If you get off at Richmond, when you walk down from the platforms turn left at the bottom then when you come out of the tunnel turn left again there is a bike shop along the street on the right with a coffee shop attached, makes the best coffee in the area, you then go under the railway bridge on Hoddle to get to Goschs which is diagonally opposite across the lights and intersection when you come out from under the bridge

I'm going to try to get to training on Friday. Is G's paddock much of a walk from Flinders St. - never been there.

Turn up dressed the same as your avatar. I'm sure someone will guide you there if you ask nicely.

Perhaps not worth starting a new thread for (mods?), but news from today's 3k Time Trial:

Melbourne Football Club Christopher José Cincotta we like to keep the times in house but the top places, in order are: Dan Nicholson, Tom McDonald, Rohan Bail, Jordie McKenzie, Nathan Jones, Joel Macdonald and Dom Barry.

And further ...

Jay Clark@ClarkyHeraldSun

Dees time trail first home Dan Nicholson (9min22) and Tom McDonald. At Princes Park.

Young Dee Jack Viney in super nick. Finished 8th in about 10min15sec. All set for a big first year.

Some of you blokes are just jealous.

However, back on topic and re the time trials. You have got to hand it to Joel MacDonald. He may not have the most ability but he works bloody hard to keep his place on the list.

He should be working harder than a bar of soap in the Castlemaine Health Spa on his disposal efficiency.

I hope you can handle the big city by yourself .

Watch out for rats and cockroaches-Collingwood and Richmond may be training nearby.

Any reports of Fitzy? I know he's got alot of competition for a spot as a forward or even a ruckman/forward, but he might be ok long term. IS he showing anything at training?

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
