WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - TOM GILLIES

I'm happy to write off pick 70 but I'll be really disappointed if we don't use pick 53 in the National Draft.

If we don't use pick 53 it means we gave away stefan martin for nothing! (yes, I know we gave away cale for nothing)

I see no problem with Clint going to the rookie list (even if he is in the leadership group). What we really need is to have a list that will hit the ground running on Round 1 and keep going all year. I acknowledge that we will experiment and trial during the NAB Cup but I feel really good that we are going to have a serious tilt at it this year!

Gillies to replace Sellar or Macdonald?

If the choice is to get rid of Sellar or Macdonald it would have to be Macca surely?

Sellar is serviceable down back, forward and can pinch hit ruck...or am I describing Pedersen?

Maybe Macdonald will get another year but personally I would prefer Sellar.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha..... (I hope that came out correctly as it's hard to type and facepalm at the same time)

I like Rivers a lot but not sure he can hold down fullback like scarlet, i think Geelong may have gotten this one wrong.

Scarlett didn't play full-back though (except in the ill-fated 2008 GF) - Lonergan does and Harry Taylor is the 2nd KPB. Scarlett was 3rd tall defender like Fletcher is. Rivers is a direct role replacement - just not as good or as quick.

Is it possible that we are thinking of using Gillies more as a mid sized back rather than KPD, hows his kicking? Is he fast?

I had the following answer form a Geelong supporter on BF:

"Quick, attacking, needs game time."

When I said we were quite well off for backs they said:

"Tall winger? -that's where I thought he could play at Geelong."

I'd take their replies with a grain of salt, although it's more than I could offer. I expect he's depth that will get his chance to cement a spot. We probably thought him best available.

Thing is also hes a ready to go player. No need to wait for development allowing better developing of other players .

This is nothing short of wholesale change in action. Very much needed .

any more changes & the culture will be lonely shivering in the corner.

A new canvas & plenty of painting to come.

That sounds great! If he can run the lines from half back and is a decent kick he may well find himself getting a chance off HBF this year.

As the senior list's have been increased to 40 as of next season we still have 4 live selections in the coming drafts to use (Viney included).

This allows us:

Pick 4: Ollie Wines

Pick 27: Jack Viney

Pick 49: Mason Wood (outside mid/forward)

Pick 53: Leigh Osborne (mature age quick HBF)

Edit: Club website hasn't included Gillies on the player list yet. We will not have room to select a player in the PSD. Removed Sherman/Toy/Gram possable pick ups.

Suspect we won't use pick 53, but go for someone in the PSD. Pick 3 there could be useful, especially if GWS take Tippet, as in that case we'd effectively have pick 2.

But it'll be pick 2 out of more or less the same pool of players, minus those taken after 53 in the ND. I reckon 53 is too early to be passing in favour of the PSD.

Agree, and with players able to nominate for the national draft combined with the creation of delisted FA, the pre-season draft is becoming less valuable and edging towards redundancy.

I can't say I'm excited by this appointment. We mustn't have rated any of the available mids.

that or think we'll have enough to work with until some more come on line ( into sight ) next year .

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
