Have to get Ross LYON best game day coach going around IMO

According to reports on SEN not long ago, Lyon has come out and made a specific statement that he wont be leaving the Saints.

That leaves Mick as the only experienced successful coach left who's presently coaching who just might be available. Can't see him coming in 2012 though and we'd need to be showing something pretty special in 2012 to snatch him for 2013 IF he decided to return IMO. As well as a pretty amazing deal, which i'm not sure we'd be up to budget wise.

Choco maybe. If he wont come i'd say we'll end up with Viney as a last resort caretaker on a 1 year contract/trial. Maybe with Eade or someone experienced recently out of the game (eg., Eade as i can't think of anyone else available that fits that criteria lol) as a senior assistant/mentor.

My confidence in securing a top line successful experienced hard nosed coach is waining by the week. And personally, as much as i appreciate and admire the short term effort Garry is making on behalf of Jimmy, i really don't feel his heart is truly in it or the club in a meaningful way. Just as it wasn't last time when he helped in giving the nod of approval to Bailey before riding off into the media sunset. Just as he's said he'll do this time around.

Thank lucifer Jimmy helped in demolishing the debt and we managed a record membership. otherwise I'd fear we'd be in a world of trouble going into 2012 right now.

I think we all better take a vial of luck potion just like Harry did in The Deadly Hallows lol. We sure need it. I can't remember the last time things started going our way both on and off the field (injuries too etc) other than securing a few early draft picks (which was a given) after hitting rock bottom a few years back.

This is the first time in many years i'm not looking forward to next year. I just can't see the light and fear we'll end up flat lining. Maybe 2013 if we work really hard over the next 2 pre-seasons and secure a kick ass coach and about 4 - 6 players that are much needed to fill gaping holes. I'm normally very optimistic in most things but this is just how i'm seeing it for 2012.

If we secured Choco....and some common sense/sweet trades and drafting occur....i might get a little more optimistic. But even then i wont be getting my hopes up for any improvement in 2012.

Would love Lyon but expect it'll be someone like Neeld or Sanderson.

If it's Todd Viney my head will hit the desk. Hard. Reeks of choosing the best we've got over the best there is. It would be the equivalent of choosing Mark Riley instead of Bailey.

2012 - Viney

2013 onwards - Malthouse

The Dee's will allow Malthouse 12 months off to freshen up.

Viney will coach the team for next year preparing them for Malthouse to take over in 2013!

This is such a ridiculous notion that has been thrown around in a lot of places.

What? The MFC is going to give viney a one year contract, and he'll take it? Doubtful

We're going to sit out another season in 2012?

They need a quality coach now, or our good young players will turn to average middle career players.

It'll take more than a year to get the players to win a premiership, so effectively your simply pushing the window back one year but I'm really not sure you're extending it.

Lyon for me, get ready to be bored yet very happy

Lyon for me, get ready to be bored yet very happy

I'll take boring and winning every day of the week, thanks. I can't stomach another year of not knowing what the game will bring every week, or worse: knowing that it's going to bring dross. The last two years have given me an ulcer.

Lyon

(Then we fall back to Neeld or Sanderson. Viney has not shown anything near enough.)

I'm not interested in what Viney has shown so far.

He hasn't had a full preseason to implement his own gameplan, or been able to choose his assistants.

All he's been able to do it tweak an existing gameplan slightly.

I think if he'd not been handed the reins, or was still at Adelaide, he'd be top 3 on our list.

He has been very very highly regarded in his time at Hawthorn and Adelaide.

If we can't get Malthouse or Lyon, I wouldn't be disappointed with Todd.

Personally, I think it'd be a line ball decision between Todd and both Neeld and Sanderson, with us going for Neeld / Sanderson, because we'd still be able to retain Todd in his original role.

I'd rather have 2 great coaching minds on our staff than just one.

And I think Todd is mature enough to defer to the head coach and not make any issues.

I appreciate he made this comment, but I believe it was before he was offered a 5 year big money deal, which may sway him some what. I know he will be a long shot but the Saints would not offer him a deal that will match ours.

Lay your nutz on the line. Just state the name, no justifications needed.

I'll start us off ...

Todd Viney.

Todd for next year then Malthouse in 2013

If I was Todd I would tell them to get stuffed 3 years or nothing.

And what does that say to the players and fans?

"don't worry guys we are just waiting for Mick next year"

poorest plan I have ever heard.

IMO it is Malhouse in 2012 or not at all.

All those who predicted 'Lyon' should be disqualified until they make clear which Lyon they mean!

I'm going with Mark Williams (not our assistant coach and not the ex-Hawk/Bomber...just to be clear)

For fear of not having my opinion counted  it's Ross of course.

I thought this thread and others were pretty obvious as to who the candidates were.

Gareth you mention "tweek an existing gameplan" lol, I didnt know we had a gameplan. Bailey has allot to answer for.

Agree with your comments in that you cannot judge Viney on 5 weeks, Bailey had 3.5 years to poison their minds with his so called gameplan. It will take a good preseason to jolt it out of them.

We are not treading water for another year, the Todd Viney -> Mick Malthouse succession plan is not an option.

They must throw everything they have at:

1) M.Malthouse

2) R.Lyon

And if they can't get one of them, then they need to work on:

1) M.Williams

2) A Good Assistant

However, with one of these options, they need a few good assistants.

Losing Wellman from the backline has killed us a fair bit this year, and they rest of our assistants are spuds.

Keep Viney as an assistant or player development, and then clear the rest.

Excuse my language,

But which ever coach we get, he needs to employ a bit of c*nt and mongrel into our players... I am sick of our club being called soft.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
