R4 2006 vs Swans (reigning premiers) on their home strip. Hard uncompromising game where MFC were down to 18 men in the last quarter and won by 5 points. Absolutely superb performance.

North in R2, 1998 is well underrated. That season could have gone anywhere after we lost to Freo, then to run away to a massive lead against the previous year's grand finalist before holding on in the face of a blistering comeback set the tone for that whole year. Pound for pound it's almost my favourite game of all time, probably because I've never seen it again since the day.

In order for us to make the finals, we had to beat Geelong at Skilled, the Bulldogs and the Bombers. I still don't know how we managed to win that Bulldogs game - from memory we were about 3 or 4 goals down with about 5 minutes left. Davey's smother on Cooney in the forward pocket was brilliant.

Unfortunately, our elimination final against Geelong was one of the most demoralizing losses I’ve seen. It was the same game Jeff White had his face rearranged by Steven King's boot... only for Bomber Thompson to later claim that King was lucky he didn't break his foot on White's face!

My memory's not extensive, but the games that spring to mind:

Elimination Final vs St Kilda, 2006. Epic game, Friday night, first final I'd ever been to, trailing in the third quarter, fighting back hard, beating a team I hated then, and sticking it up the a-hole Saints supporters in the row in front who had been sticking it up us in the first half. Best win I've been to I think.

Fremantle in 2008. Coming back from 54 points down is enormous, doesn't matter who the opponent is. Especially when, in 2008, we were abysmal.

Brisbane in 2008. Similar to the Freo game.

Sydney in 2010. One of the best four-quarter performances we've had in the last 4 years.

The last three games in 2005 to push us back into the finals after we'd sat near the top of the ladder and then lost 7 or so in a row. That included beating Geelong in Geelong.

I think last year's win against the Lions at the G on a Saturday night was a very big win, our biggest for a few years.

Coming off 2 wooden spoons.

Spotlight game on a Saturday night.

Lions rolling with 5-0 start, Fevola and Brown dominating.

I may buck the trend here a little and go for the lesser celebrated wins.

Obviously all the ones above are great, but here goes for some others.

1994 Round 24 versus Sydney. 18.13 to 27.5 with the Ox kicking 9 straight.

1998 Round 22 versus Richmond. They needed to win or lose by a small amount, we won by 76 and Farmer took one of the best marks you're likely to see.

1998 the infamous Qualifying final against Adelaide. A smashing, but the less said the better.

1999 Round 4 versus Hawthorn. Ripper match, scores close for much of the last term. Robbo punched through the point (ala Trengove 11 years later). Last quarter went 35 and what an atmosphere!

2000 Rounds - lots. 2, 14 (people often forget that we were 6-7 when we played the Pies, 9 second half goals from Farmer was a highlight beyond many others. We were actually only one win above Collingwood), 21 - the Olympic match when Woey ran riot, loved his celebration on the Members wing, that's when I knew we were a good thing. Collingwood also rolled North that day in a boilover that gave us 3rd and a passage to the GF. Prelim final, great fun and a square up for two years previous.

2001 round 2 versus Adelaide. 3 point down with 20 seconds to go. Throw in, Schwarz to Leoncelli goal with 3 seconds left for a 3 point win.

2002 Round 14 versus Brisbane. 6 goals down at quarter time at the reigning premier's, 31 down at the half. Finals were on the line, I remember leaving my grandparents 30 odd down and turning on the telly at home to see us 20 odd up with Neitz kickign 7 (it's amazing how many great wins he spearheaded for us).

2002 Round 19 versus West Coast. Injuries, 3 losses, 9th placed Dees went to Perth to play the 5th placed Eagles, coming from behind to win by a goal.

2003 Round 13 versus St Kilda. Quarter time scores level. Half time scores level. 20 minutes into the third quarter scores were level. We won the last quarter by a point. In a 6 minute spell at the end of the 3rd, we kicked 7 unanswered goals. A fun day in a bleak season.

2004 Round 6 versus Carlton. 92 points ip at 3/4 time, 'nuff said.

2004 Round 15 versus St Kilda. Big top 4 clash on the G, playing against a good St Kilda side when it looked like we were the two up and coming teams. Riewoldt kicked 9, we won by 57. Oh the false dawn...but still a fun win.

2004 Round 17 versus Hawthorn. For the sole reason that it left us top of the ladder for the first time of my adult(ish) life - I believe.

2005 Round 1 versus Essendon. Beating the Scum in an emotionally charged match was heart-wrenching and amazing.

2006 Round 6 versus Geelong. Dees dodgy start to the season, Neitz goes down pre-match and Dunn comes in. J. Hunt marks the ball out 20 in front in the 3rd term to put them over 4 goals ahead and he mocks a Melbourne player near him. Misses the shot, Davey kicks one of the goals of the year and the Dees win by a kick.

2006 Round 11 versus Collingwood. A Queen's Birthday smashing. From memory both teams were in form, massive crowd, great win.

2007 Round 10-11. Wins over Adelaide and Collingwood were fun. Daniel Bell and Green playing a blinder, then Robbo downing the filth.

The Freo come back. The Broadbridge game. I think a game against West Coast (possibly?) which was a win for Jimmy Stynes was a great win.

R5 2010 vs Bris Lions at MCG. - Bris on top of the time were destroyed by a young MFC that gave the first inkling of the future. The only problem has the impatience of supporters about the maturing of the young talent.

Thoroughly enjoyed the '87 run.

It's a shame that it's etched in with the most painful game I attended too....

We beat them in both encounters in 2005 and after getting thumped by them in the elimination final, we come out and win the next game... That's always annoyed me.

Round 18, 2004, we got to the top of the ladder, Tiddles Ridley was saying this was the best Demons team in forty years. Went downhill after this.

Here's the list of DVD's I have from my own 'Name a game' selection.

Round 20 1992, Jakovick kicks 7 and we beat the filth at Victoria Park who were top of the ladder at the time.

Round 15 1993, beat Geelong at the G even though Ablett snr booted 11 with Steven Febey playing on him but managed to run forward and kick one himself!

Qualifying Final 1994, the blues match, already been referenced many times, Schwarz dominated.

Semi Final 1994, Lyon booted 10 (last time a dees player did this) and we smash a young Bulldogs team that had 3 rookies by the names of Scott West, Brad Johnson & Rohan Smith playing.

Round 22 1998, smashed Richmond by over 70 points, as mentioned by another poster Richmond needed to win to make the finals and we needed to win for a top 4 spot, Farmer stands on Lyon's head!

Qualifying Final 1998, smash the Crows the defending champs, Farmer towles up McLeod and White & Viney dominate the middle.

Semi Final 1998, after trailing early against the previous years runners up Melbourne smashes the Saints at a wet MCG despite the last withdrawl of Lyon. Farmer proved the spark in the 2nd term and ends up with 4 including a brilliant scissor kick goal in the 3rd term.

Round 7 1999, beat Essendon in a shoot out at the G in a year they dominated and we missed the finals.

Round 7 2000, our first game at the new Docklands stadium and still our best win. Beat the Eagles by more then 10 goals with Neitz destroying Scott Cummins at Full Back.

Round 14 2000, Match against the filth. As mentioned by others remembered for Farmer kicking 9 in the 2nd half.

Qualifying Final 2000, against the Blues, mentioned by several others.

Preliminary Final 2000, smash North Melbourne with Woewodin dominating the midfield. Don't really remember the 88 Prelim apart from watching replays so this was the first time I'd seen us win our way into a GF.

Round 22 2002, St. Kilda at Docklands, had to win to avoid an interstate trip for the first week of the finals in what was a real danger game as Stuart Loewe's farewell match. Won a shoot out with Steven Armstrong getting us across the line in the final term.

Elimination Final 2002, beat North and any finals win's a good one. Pagan's last match as North coach.

Round 5 2004, beat Sydney at Stadium Australia despite Junior doing his knee. Scott Thompson starred!

Round 6 2004, beat Carlton by over 100 points, enough said.

Round 15 2004, beat the Saints in a top 4 match at the MCG just after their winning streak had ended.

Round 21 2005, beat the Bulldogs by 4 points despite being down by 21 points with less then 5 min to go.

Round 6 2006, mentioned earlier beating the Cats on a friday night at the MCG with several players out. Dunn on debut kicked 2 and looked really good, thought we'd found a key forward! And as others have said, Davey kicked one of the goals of the year!

Round 8 2006, our last win over the Hawks on a friday night at the MCG. Hawthorn tried to rough Melbourne up but got belted by us instead. Neitz also passed the all time leading goal kickers list for Melbourne that night.

Round 11 2006, Queens Birthday match against the Filth, built as the two best VIC teams going head to head. Josh Fraser gave White a send off before they went down by about 10 goals.

Elimination Final 2006, knocked off the Saints and I thought this was the night that we'd unearthed an A grade midfielder in Brock McLean.

Round 7 2008, beat Freo after trailing by over 50 points for Bailey's first win as coach.

Round 14 2008, I was in Dublin when this happened at the Guiness Brewery but was called as soon as the siren sounded by the old man. Great desperation shown including the best thing PJ ever did on a football field (chase down on Sherman).

Round 15 2009, beat Port Adelaide at the MCG in the match I reckon LJ announced himself to the football world with his first bag of 4 goals and some flying marks.

Made sure I had at least 1 win against all opponents. When I order my next batch I'll be sure to include a win over Gold Coast annd an old one against Fitzroy!

2000 - Qualifying

For some reason Red Seat members were dispersed in a bunch of spots, which meant an MFC bay was right alongside a CFC bay.

Well talk about counting your chickens...

Was in the Brad Green pocket, only thing I can actually remember other than Carlton supporters getting v. defensive only 20 min after saying such mindless stuff as - "should have gone to Bulla this week" etc. (we responded later that we'd enjoy our week off in the mountains)

Was thinking about this the other day following Essendon's surprise win over Geelong.

When was the last truly GREAT win that the Melbourne Football Club has had. Sure we've had a few good and enjoyable wins in the past few years, but I don't reckon we've had a GREAT win in much, much longer. My definition of a great win would be:

Opposition: A strong team in good form or, winning well interstate

Game: Holding on to win in a tightly contest match, or, coming back after being 5 goals down

Importance: Needed to win to make the finals or simply a big game with a big build up

Style: Where we actually played well for 4 quarters and didn't win because the opposition had a shocker or had key injuries.

The only great win I can think of in the past 5 years was probably the Elimination Final against St. Kilda and we were lucky they had a few guys go down injured.

Both Collingwood games last year would have been great wins but alas we couldn't get over the line.

Any suggestions?

I think any of the next 4 games are chance for GREAT wins. It would be fantastic for the players, supporters and club in general to have one...

After the game I remember walking around inside the ground with a massive smile on my face, floating on air... such a surreal feeling to win that final...

Great thread - it's really hard to think of any of those type of games! Which isn't great...but it's true, any of these next few games are a massive opportunity... surely we can snag one and shut up the doubters! Can't afford to not be at the ground, as much as it may turn out a painful experience...

In my mind it's probably one of these wins that will allow me to feel we've improved slightly on last year... Otherwise it will have been a bit of a nothing season...
