Don't know much about Whitfield.......Is he better than Viney????? Scully??????

At least we know what Viney is a very good hard nosed player that will get is own ball and is not afraid to mix it with anyone and has skills we need at the moment.

He has been earmarked as the clear number 1 for over 12 months now, same class as Swallow, Coniglio and O'Meara ect

From what i read he can play both inside and out, but is more suited as a outside ball user, great endurance and speed ect that you expect form such a highly touted player.

thanks to Knightmare on BF, take it or leave it....

#1 GWS- Lachlan Whitfield (VIC - Mid)

Height: 185cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 18/07/1994

Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays

Style: Ben Cousins

Player comparison:

Range: 1-3

Profile: The thing that makes Whitfield stand out is his work rate, he just never stops running and absolutely works his man into the ground consistently. Whitfield has absolutely crazy endurance and as a 17 year old makes mince meat of the beep test, can score 16 which for an AFL prospect is in the very top percentile. The other thing is his skill level by foot. Perfect left footer. Just that class above and always looks composed with ball in hand and is that class above. Has a real natural evasiveness and can pretty easily avoid tackles. Strong mark overhead on the lead and around the field. Speed good but not elite. Could add some more kicking penetration, probably only has a 40-45m kick on him at this stage but if he can add 10-15m onto that kick it will only increase his hurt factor. Also will need to eventually develop that inside game to go with his outside game which at this stage means he will likely jump into an outside role or perhaps off a back flank. Hopefully we’ll see some signs of a developing inside game season. Physically Whitfield has developed well over the past few years which suggest he still has allot of physical development ahead.

Here's what the same guy said about Viney:

#4 Melbourne - Jack Viney (VIC - Mid) F/S

Height: 178cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 13/04/1994

Recruited from: Oakleigh Chargers

Style: Joel Selwood

Player comparison: Toby Greene

Range: 1st round

Profile: Really competitive and hard inside midfield. Could have joined an AFL club as a 17 year old and been a regular. Not a big fella, but purely and simply he is the hardest player I’ve seen coming through the system and his attack on the ball, attack on the man and aggression on the field is without equal and the big reason why he is such a dominant player already. Wins all the hard, contested ball and as a 17 year old was doing better than most of the 18 year olds who got drafted early, so Melbourne will get very lucky to have young Jack who I’m sure will very quickly become a Mark Neeld favourite. Tackling is excellent. Is a real leader out on the field and is someone who really leads by his actions and hardness at the footy. Really high character guy and hard worker who will put time into his game until he becomes elite. Jack has very clean hands and uses it well by hand consistently. Big time accumulator. Left foot kick, can use his right. Kicking is generally very good and will continue to get better. Speed is good, but not elite. The big strength athletically is his endurance which without seeing any of his testing I suspect would be very, very good because he has such a high work rate.

There is no risk, except the one that you and others keep fabricating. We'll take Viney. End of story. At least one of the clubs lower than us will nominate him, just to make sure we don't get a bonus in the second round, and in full knowledge that we'll take him first round if we have to.

Viney is already effectively a Melbourne player, and any other scenario is just straight from fantasyland.

if gws or gc nominate viney with no intention to draft him surely its draft tampering and thus outside ths rules

Yes, I thought a similar thing. Scully was an endurance freak too, but he still has a body that makes him look like an under 12.

Right now Id be more excited to have Viney than Whitfield. Both would be pretty good though...

One of the more uneducated comments I've seen on here. Whitfield will be a star. Unfortunately it won't be for us.

It's also important not to under-estimate the importance of Jack Viney being the first potentially sensational MFC father-son pick in a very, very long time.

This stuff creates a great club culture.

"Melbourne has indicated it will select Viney - son of club champion and current recruiting manager Todd Viney - at the 2012 draft"

Pretty sure the last thing the MFC has said that it was not a guarantee and would come down to whats best for the club based on the picks they have on hand.

We're not GWS or GC - we can't have them all

A broken jaw is never a good thing but in this instance it might not have been a bad thing. On concern about all young players is managing work-loads and the club has been involved with Jack and the teams he plays for to ensure he isn't over cooked this year. I watch a show last night about the U18 carnival and it was mentioned Essendon have also restricted the games Daniher plays this year, they mentioned he will be limited to 2 games for Victoria. From pre-season reports he had to manage some grion issues. Whilst most kids need to play most games to prove their value and most kids want to play every game, Jack has had a good break and will only really play half a year of footy.

This is where we see how hollow a 'bluff' would be - Todd will call out his son's name. We have already agreed a contract with the kid...

The only thing we can do is shut up about specifics and Jack's immense talent and attempt what you thought up a few months ago - a deal with the two teams below us and an avenue for those teams to argue that 'they didn't see Viney in the top 2 so they didn't bid for him.' It's just self-serving BS but it will allow GC and GWS some breathing room when/if they let us take Jack with a second round pick.

It's a deal or it's Pick 3.

There is no bluff, olisik. Let it go.

If we have the chance to take Whitfield instead of Viney, this should be considered. Whitfield is tearing it apart in under 18s

You do realise that we will have Picks 3 and 4?

If Whitfield is there and we have already comitted Pick 3 to Viney we will have the unbelievable misfortune of having the very next pick...

So you are going to have to add one more name to this doomsday scenario.

Jack should be told to shirk the contest for the rest of the year.

Headline "Jack loses nerve after broken jaw".

Do you think GC & GWS would take the bait?

Sorry, I was assuming we would finish 16th. Just like you are assuming we might finish below GC.

Your worst case scenario puts Viney against the best in the draft. I don't think it will make a difference. We will take him.

Remember Buckley, collywobbles and Brisbane? Remember what happened and how it happened?

All we have to do is slyly let let be known that if they nominate Viney then they can have him; but for 2 years and then we will have Viney back AND Whitfield.

Why would Jack want to be part of the Melbourne Football Club if it sold him out for two years to gain a different player?

If the Footy Gods smile on us, Jack could be our next champion.

Lets not look the gift horse in the mouth.

We'll take him with our first pick

and never regret it.

Yeah.... nah.

I think you must've misunderstood the Buckley situation.

No parallels here.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
