There is life after Football but those that grab the GWS cash will probably disappear from view once their football playing days are over. They will have no profile in Victoria, the major football market, and no profile in NSW unless the game really takes off up there, which I doubt it will. These players will struggle to earn a good wage when they can no longer play and will just fade away like so many before them.

Players like Pendelbury and Thomas will almost certainly stay in Melbourne because the big bucks will be waiting for them after the final siren rings, Thomas has already got a bit of a media profile. Managers should point out the long term effects of moving to small interstate clubs and how they may forego a very lucrative life after football if they do.

How big a profile would Swallow have if he was playing for say Collingwood and not Gold Coast and who will care about Abblett if he wants to come back to Melbourne when he finishes his playing days with them, no one.

Football is just one part of a footballers life a smart one will continue to earn a very good living long after he retires. But will he do it in Western Sydney?

What I don't understand is that a player like Scully is still going to make a lot of money if he stays with Melbourne, not as much but still a lot. And as RobbieF pointed out, with such a big profile in Melbourne Scully would have no trouble getting a job in a football or non-football related industry when he retired where he could earn a lot.

Easy for me to say this from the outside, however ask any retired footballer if they would prefer money or a better chance at a Premiership and they will the the Premiership any time - that is what he would get at Melbourne.

Here is a question for the legal eagles on this site. With betting agencies taking bets on this if Tom dropped to a few of his mates I'm stayig load up would this be against the AFL gambling policy?

Well, the world is a small one - Tom has moved into an apartment in the south eastern suburb (my old suburb) in Melbourne. Good possie too. About 30 mins along the freeway to Casey and 20 mins to the city.

Apparently with another girl, I would say sister.

So I guess I can corroborate part of what another poster said earlier.

This doesn't mean 'he is going nowhere' but it is interesting to note that if someone was to have already signed (as a few on here contend) then they would most likely stay at home until they go north, rather than move twice in 10 months.

Because if there is one immutable truth, it is that moving sucks...

Spot on RF , and there seems to be more in it post career if your a 1 club player aswell .

They might get a local gig being special comments during Giants games ala Bickley for the Crows but thats about it .

One of my favourite arguments brought up during this is the "he didn't play/travel to Adelaide...that's a worry."

It will take GWS at least a decade before they are knocking on the door, regardless of the 4 or 5 greats they poach. Tom can stay at the D's until he wins a flag / brownlow, then go chasing money.

I am not speaking about onfield performance tonight and should have been more clear regarding my post. The GWS are a young club and yes it may/may not take a decade before they are a success, but lets get back on the topic. My post was about Scully going to such a club that has no definitive building structure. A home ground and supporters are my main concern, where is thier supporter base going to come from? The Suns seemed to be heading in the right direction when they got the go ahead from the AFL, as they have been building a foundation from previous years. Why would Scully want to go to a team that may not even be around for a decade. After all, thier concessions as you say will dry out. Scully going to the Suns for top dollars I could understand, but to give up Melbourne for GWS???

They will be around for a very long time. The AFL is well aware that this is going to be a loss making venture for many a year and is in it for the long haul.

After GWS sign their uncontracted players at the end of the season then rape the draft they will be round the mark. Not to mention they they get to sign 16 uncontracted players next year also and have already had access to the best 17 year olds. Don't worry the AFL will make sure they are a very good team before to long.

By the way Sculls wasnt watching the game tonight as he was out for Sammy Blease's bday In Sorrento.

Reported on Demonology that Chris Connolly at a function last night reported he had spoken to Tom and his Manager and they state they have not had one conversation with GWS.
