  4. This is the most excited I have been for a debut since Trac was picked. The kid has some serious courage in the way he launches at the pill and the ability to split open packs. I would have played him Rd 1 ahead of both BBB and TMac as he contests so hard in the air and on the ground as well where the elder statesman (BBB especially) add little value once the ball hits the turf. I've been impressed with BBB's ability to snag some opportunistic goals this year, however he still plays like a flanker and gets moved under a high ball so easily which gets frustrating. TMac has really struggled from what I have seen as well. This kid is an old school, pack hitting CHF and I can't wait to see him develop with us. Not expecting much in his first few games however but I really believe he'll be a jet for us long term.

  5. If you want a key tall for 2 years time look no further than Daniel Curtin in this years draft, this kid is special. It”s not just his KPP attributes, the decision making and poise this kid has for a tall are something I’ve not seen in many players. I’m talking Pendlebury type poise and awareness of what is happening around him. Can play at either end with CHB probably his best position

  6. Goodwin on van Rooyed debut: young-demon-to-make-debut-against-high-flying-swans "He's trained with these guys for a few years now, so he's got pretty good cohesion with this group already, and one thing you'll see from big Rooey is his ability to compete aerially," Goodwin said. "He goes at the ball hard, he creates a contest and his follow-up at ground level is exceptional. "We won't be asking him to do too much other than that for us." Nice way to keep expectations of him realistic. JvR effectively replaces Max in our fwd line so we won't need Grundy for that role. TMac is there to help Grundy ruck at CB and fwd 50. And to be our marking target when exiting our d50. It helps that if Ladhams is out, Sydney have no experienced ruckman. We will miss Max's towering presence but reckon we have his role covered.

  7. DEMON IN LINE FOR EXTENSION Melbourne has started talks with defender Judd McVee and is poised to extend the rookie's contract after an impressive debut against the Western Bulldogs in round one. McVee, who was recruited with pick No.16 in the 2022 NAB AFL Rookie Draft, has shown significant promise since joining the Demons alongside fellow West Australians Jacob Van Rooyen and Taj Woewodin. The East Fremantle product played 19 games for Melbourne's VFL team last year and was part of its premiership, graduating to the AFL backline against the Bulldogs, where he did not look out of place. A two-year deal would likely see the 19-year-old move off a rookie contract by his fourth season. Melbourne has been pleased with the skilful West Australian's ability to defend opposition small forwards while also providing bounce from the backline. Once rated an early draft prospect after earning All Australian selection at the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, he has been mentored by premiership defender Christian Salem. – (Nathan Schmook) When he was drafted I likened McVee to Salem as footy IQ and skills were noted among his assets. It is great to see Salem now mentoring him.

  9. I'm really looking forward to the video where it gets announced he's debuting. He's been really positive in simlar videos in the last few weeks when others have made their debut in front of him which understandably would have been tough personally whilst he bides his time. He well and truly deserves his moment with the boys making a fuss and getting around him.

  11. Just came across this article: judd-mcvee-mcg-debut-melbourne-demons-family Quite a realistic view from his father about being in and out of the team. This comment from him caught my eye: "Christian Salem took over his development, Steven May has been huge for him as well and Jake Lever was pretty good there, so he learnt a lot in his first year," he said. That support extended on to the field, Mr McVee said, with Dees midfield leader Angus Brayshaw providing a crucial boost on the day". Interesting that Gus is referred to as our midfielder leader - I guess he takes some of the workload off Lever to marshall the midfielders defensively, especially in May and Salem's absence. The words of a very proud dad: "There's a photo of him with the ball tucked under his arm and he's just smiling, running down the middle of the G, it's awesome," he said.

  12. The top 10 will be really strong this year. I'd much rather two inside 10 than pick 1 itself. Harley Reid will be a gun, but he's in the mould of Petracca/Dusty etc and we need more balance across the list. I'd rather us get two inside 10 and one inside 20 this year as it'll only add time to our premiership window. Jackson leaving will be a blessing in disguise and Freo's start to the season is just what we need. If we can manage a top 8 pick from them, we'll be laughing. Add our first and second rounder plus their second rounder and we have an unbelievable hand to play with. Gold Coast have academy players this year so will need picks and I can't see them making the top eight this year. The best thing about it is that our guys can start talks early with other clubs as we'll know roughly what picks we'll be playing with. We're in prime position for another draft haul at a time where we're considered one of if not the flag favourite. What is life!? What a far cry from the Neeld days!

  14. He just seems very "Schwartzy" the way he goes about things. He could be a huge building block for our forward line once he gets some games under his belt. Very bloody exciting. Go Rooey!

  16. FFS. It's March and already someone's "annoyed" that we're not targeting a player for a trade. You want to know what our plan is to improve our forward line? How about we see how the 2023 premiership season goes for a bit longer than two games first?! FFS.

  17. Had the pleasure of sitting next to Oliver at the MFC season launch function, with Ooze sitting on the other side of Oliver. He commented on the significant step up required in fitness, but said he’d already cut his 2km time, by I think it was 20 seconds, pre and post Christmas. We had a great chat about footy and non footy stuff and he was more than happy to answer questions from everyone else at the table. Not sure if Ooze is naturally close to all the new draftees, but he clearly has a very close bond with Oliver, based on their interactions that night. I’m watching his VFL season with added interest, really hope he can make it.

  18. I'm not expecting a starring role but perhaps a bit more optimism is warranted. This is a guy who averaged just over 2 goals a game for 16 games in the VFL last year, who's added a pre-season to that VFL year, and who opened this year's VFL season with 19 disposals, 11 marks and 1.1.

  22. In the Casey game last week, the Bulldogs 206 cm 106 kg ruckman, Jordan Sweet, No. 41 was roughing up one of the Casey players as he was making his way to interchange...really bullying/intimidating...fair enough...Casey player changed with JVR, who went straight to the said 41 and gave it right back, with plenty of interest. 41 seemed surprised and definitely did not like it. Me, I loved it. Good luck JVR. Well deserved.

  23. Great news. In a way he's still quiet raw but hes a natural footballer. Some may have different opinion but I thought he actually did a pretty good job on Cameron.

  24. Giving them credit. While looking for updates I came across this banter: Removing myself from the desire to absolutely thrash Melbourne this week for a moment, congratulations to Clayton Oliver, who is playing game 150 this weekend. Very few players can say they're a great of the game before they've even played their 150th game. One of my favourite non-Swans and an absolute freak. Hope it's a shocker for him. Hopefully spends most of the game chasing our mids. For me he is just about the best player in the game. An absolute monster in the contest and nearly impossible to stop. Love the match up in this game.. the two current "kings" of the mids in oliver and tracc vs imo the fastest rising stars of the mids in the game in errol and chad IMO he would be the best player in the game, and the only challenger would be his own teammate in Gawn. I suppose over the next 4-6 weeks we'll now find out how much one has to do with the other. Not often Oliver gets praise from opp fans. Good to see some Sydney fans honour him for his 150th. But now that I've given them credit, i hope he burns their midfield, has his best game ever and leads us to victory. Couldn't be a better way to celebrate his 150th than against a team that has the wood over us.

  29. A handy workhorse? A good key defender? Makes you wonder whether Taylor confused him with another player when we took him at 19 in the draft. Makes you wonder if Goody is also confused, given going by these comments he seems to think he is ready NOW: “We’ve known for a while we've got an exciting prospect at our fingertips. But you've got to make sure with guys like Jake that they're ready to play. AFL footy is a challenging game,” Goodwin says. “He's worked incredibly hard at VFL level to develop his game over the last two years. “You need to be ready, as a 19-to-20-year-old coming into AFL footy as a power forward, you need your game in really good shape and we feel like we've been patient with him and got him to a point where it's time to unleash him.” Just checking DS that YOU haven't confused JVR with another player? I mean, i assumed the stats you posted (7 disposals, 2 marks, 1 behind) were from the round one VFL game. But that can't be the case given this article notes 'the 19th selection in the 2021 National Draft impressed in his first outing for the year, taking 11 marks and kicking a goal from 19 disposals in last Saturday’s VFL opener against the Bulldogs.'

  36. I wouldn't put all the eggs in the No.1 pick baskets. Not that I know of this kid that has become hot property. Isn't this draft supposed to be a super draft with talent running deep, I prefer us to work up to 2/3 top 10/12 picks like we did the year we got Kossie and Jackson.

  46. Agree with this Jimmy. We could get a Petracca or we could get a Jaegar O'Meara who was also highly touted and then had crook knees and I don't reckon ever lived up to the hype in his draft year. If it's a strong draft, we're better off with three highly capable top 20 players than the single No. 1 pick. In Jason Taylor we trust.....he's spun gold with picks in the 20+ range, imagine how much better off we'll be with three picks inside 20?
